Well, maybe so. Thank you all for your good wishes and kind thoughts (and having kept them for us for the past lord knows how long). We are no more perfect than any other assembly of mere mortals with feet of clay, but I think we've always thought of ourselves as willing to try harder... rightly or wrongly.
In any event, what President-Elect Obama said last night is very true: This is only the chance to create change. there is still an awful lot of work to be done.
now, you mob are a reasonable lot (even Mr Herron when he's not too drunk LOL): What can we do to be helpful to to the rest of the world? And what unswept corners of our house do you notice?
How can we do better than we have?
With the greatest of respect Mr Eponodyne, if you have to ask us where the US has gone wrong and what needs to be addressed then clearly you have had your head in the sand for the last 8 years. Your best allies as well as the non-aligned have been ringing it out for years and you havent heard (or you havent listened?).
Anyway.... fingers cross for Obamaman.

I'm joining the congratulatons to US voters for the wise choice! :D
For too many years I was watching the US from outside, thinking about how lucky I was to live in Europe.
Now I think you have a chance to change that completely. Wish we had a guy like Obama here in Italy.

Mychael,
This Yank has been all over the world over and over. It's nice to get away once in awhile, but it is really, really nice to return home. Whether led by a socialist like Bush and Obama or a capitalist like Reagan, America is the example for the rest of you to follow and admire.

in only some ways, you really are not at all free, when your leaders have to speak behind glass, De Gaulle, although had many attempts on his life, refused to be closeted . Obama, iss a brave and marked man, perhaps towards the ends of his first office tenure he will try one again to regulate the crazies, the gun lobby, until you get rid of weapons which are not at all needed in modern society you are always going to live with the threat of assasination and murder
So I know where I would rather live

After the past two elections got stolen and a fraud has been allowed to wrongfully occupy the Whitehouse, it is nice to see democracy return to the USA after a eight year hiatus.
Thank you my fellow Americans.
The 20 years worth of damage done in the past eight years may never be repaired. The smash and grab vandals reign is over, may our lesson be learned by future generations.

Obama is going to be seriously compromised by the global situation. This man, in fact no man, can live up to the expectations that have been generated given what he is going to have to work with. Its a close to impossible challenge to come up roses here even if the best course is plotted.

1. Bush is a socialist?!
2. Are we supoposed to follow and admire your banking system? Your gun laws? Your human rights record? Your litigatious culture? Your foreign policies? Your environmental concerns?
There is much to admire about the US, especially the way it encourages and rewards hard work and creativity, and the people are very polite. But if you think France, Japan, Australia, Holland etc want to be clones of America, you are mistaken.
I would love to spend some time working in America, and of course many Americans believe it to be the best place on earth, but many Italians think that about Italy, the Germans about Germany etc.

Eh PI,
Some things are there for a reason !! Some are dependant on guns to maintain a wee sliver of order, and not by choice but out of neccesity. Anyone who wants to argue this, come live in SA for a while. People do have the right to defend themselves, contrary to what our gov tries to make us believe. The true joke is the difference between a tourist and a racist is a few days in SA.
I for one admire the US. Good grief, if you just look what they did when and where it is for sure admirable. To name but one example, shiploads of food arive in our harbours for hunger starving philamons. It gets rejected bacause it was not cultivated correctly to their opinion. Are you kiddin me ? Starving people !
So far the US has been a buffer for many evil thing to become dominantly powerfull. It's the same as was the death penalty in SA, now that it's banned, murders have increased considerably, last I heard it was like 75 per day. Who gives a ****, worst that can happen to you if you knock someone off is a jail sentence IF the almost non existing police force does something about it. The US has been (is / was) the death sentence other countries respected and kept in line because of it.
There is much that can be said on this, but the US and what they stood for to now is admirable for sure.
If the US can pls come sort zim and our crap out here, I'm putting a US sticker on my car !!

Mychael, (and RHP) My post was a response to yours when you wrote: Still a little ironic/sad though, that whilst probably most of the world was watching/discussing what happened there that your average yank barely knows about the world outside his own borders.
I'm sorry, did you think you could just be derogatory toward me and not receive a response taylored to raise your ire? Referring to Americans as a backward group of untraveled rednecks is a rather impolite and quite incorrect stereotype. In fact, I see the BBC cable news had the largest gain in viewers last month here in the States.
Several found fault with my response but none with the original offense. This is a common microcosm of world attitudes toward America - a double standard. When a tsunami washes over your cities or the bully across the border rattles his sabre, everyone comes running to the good ol' USA for help. That's why we've given 3-fold the foreign aid of any other country on Earth every year for decades. That's why we pay for our Navy to patrol the world's shipping lanes to protect your products. ETC.! How does that reflect a self-absorbed society? And Mychael calls us "self-centred?" Perhaps, Mychael just doesn't know better. There's a large movement in the US to become "self-centred" and isolationist. If that happens, the world may quickly fall into a bloody mess of religious wars and Soviet rebirth and global trade will stop. Thus, we won't have much time to discuss our lil' boat designs will we?!
Most of all, you Aussies really surprise me. Your former Prime Minister was a great, strong leader. He understood world threats and knew what we free countries must do. But I guess the developed world's current counter-culture culture, where ol' 60s hippies are running the show, just can't allow for strong leaders who are willing to pay politically to do the right thing. It's just so much easier and cooler to criticize those trying to make a difference than to get off your own ass. Here in the US, we just elected a Marxist with zero experience - he's never even had a job! I'd trade freakin' Obama for Howard anytime - and would throw in all the Fosters you could take.
<<thank you, I feel much better - and Fanie, thank you! If only one appreciates our sacrifice of blood and treasure, all was worthwhile>>

And how much do you appreciate a someone's education?
Should we talk about cultural background of Obama vs. that of G.W.Bush?

Please, everybody, understand that not eveybody's as quick to ire as Mr Juice above here. I certainly wouldn'thave worded things like he did the first go-around. I know that the USA doesn't have a corner on the nationalistic fervor market, but it does seem a little overweening in a thread like this. I would love to go to SA and help with yer boat; I would love to arrive there with a shipment of grain (I didn't know about shipments being rejected!).
I'm sorry we elected such a douchecannon to make you-all nervous for the past 8 years. I fully believe we will have a good and decent man in office-- and if he's a little red around the edges, well, that probably won't hurt us too much. I don't think he is, though.
I hope we can look forward to more diplomatic solutions, and more acreage under tillage so we can feed the hungry. I hope that national health care becomes available so that HIV medications can be made more availabel to sub-Saharan Africa. I hope we can start to lead by example, not by force. I hope you all can come visit one day, and travel around this amazing piece of the planet--that you can see Lake Superior in full storm. That you can see Wisconsin in the autumn, and springtime in the Rockies. Come and watch a small-town Independance Day parade.
That is where the heart of the US is. Not in the White House but in the love of its citizens for where they live.
As long as we keep that a little further in front, we should do fine. Thank you all very much for your patience and support.

You voted him in cause he is the most suitable man for the job.BO is a good person good luck to him. yes, first off pick a man/woman who is multilingual
being multilingual a person would have great experience of the world, that would go a long way
Then have the party elect their man and let him her stand without all this campaign trail stuff
have debates only on national tv, and limit the funding to almost zero, and pay the tv to do thsi from the national purse, keep these debates going for as long as 5 months before an election
In other words elect the candidate for the party on his.her, merits not on wealth or clout
this man may come from building a successful business or some such thing
But hey BO, will now soon reveal his true agenda, one he could not do on the trail, and he will scale back the military and start building schools etc
you need change your election system, it is now just a pantomime

the presidency is run by business men - the president is just a puppet on a string - and the generals and military dictates. Face it, the military is the biggest business in the USA. There will always another war to be fought to feed that hungry monster, more so if there is some oil or other much needed commodity involved....

Roger that my American brother.
For all you congratulatory types and self-professed savants of American politics, what you are applauding is our fundamental shift to isolationism, protectionism and labor.
What this election brings to the world is a very large void, coupled with neither political-will nor financial resources to fill it for any reason other than a direct threat to our own borders. Literally.
Parenthetically, for all of you that think we Americans are not in touch with world affairs, most of us are here because we and our forefathers are all too connected with your ways. We read history more than tabloids. And we study what we want to become, not what we don’t. There is little need for Americans to study the current affairs of this world. And what is to come of this world now, with all these congratulations, is something we can readily discern from any history book.

Well voters in Minneapolis, Minnesota overwhelmingly approved an increase in the sales tax (3/8ths of 1%) that will double funding per student per annum. Hopefully some of that will go to geography texts.
I don't know if the rest of the world has a passion for it or what, but I've noticed my fellow citizens are just incredibly bad at geography, both natural and political. I understand getting confused about all those little countries in and around the bight of Benin; and the former Yugoslavia/Balkan States; but when almost a third of our citizens can't name their own states on a map, that's sad as hell.
It's too bad more US citizens don't travel internationally. On second thought maybe it's just as well, eh?

Thanks...I thought the whole world had gone socialist on me....was about to start hoarding canned food and ammo! The foreign guys don't bother me because all they know is what CNN and the major networks tell them - and that news is so liberally biased that the world only receives the statist side of the story.
Romney would have made hamburger out of Obama in the debates - don't know how we nominated a liberal Republican with no business experience! Our choices, indeed, gave us no choice.
I thought you may enjoy a chart from my other vocation. Can there be any doubt people and their standard of living suffer when government grows? In America, there were three big, statist growth spurts in our history: The New Deal (FDR the socialist), The Great Society (Johnson) and the recent end of the Reagan Revolution. Can you find them on this chart of the inflation adjusted Dow:

Epo,
Good for your schools. Maybe one day your school funding will approach the highest expense per student area of the country; Washington DC. Of course, their students are also the worst educated. That's what throwing money at a union does without competition. What a waste.
Government doesn't help the common man, a fair and competitive marketplace is what lifts us all. Voting for things that make you feel better while the history/factual data shows your doing harm is the liberal way. Perhaps, you could watch this live, puppy-cam instead of voting to appease your emotions. You'll love it:

i saw a sign near Housten, two years back, it said"every Texan, deserves 450 horses, with a pic of a pickup truck That says it all, really, you make up 3% of worlds population(somewhere there) and you use half worlds oil, you are incredibly greedy and grabbing, you have done more damage to the world than you will ever ever know, and during the Bush years you became hated Now I travel a lot, and I know that a certain % of you lot are very good people , but by the actions of the peasents there and the admin, you have made in unsafe for all westerners to travel in much of the world, frinstance I can not go to Afghanistan, Pakistan in North, and in Northern Africa I must where shirt which says NZ on it

Lazey,
Yeah, we asked al Queda to blow-up the world trade buildings, an embassy or two, a battleship...all before we did any retalliation. Nice logic genius. Don't worry, they'll come for you too. You have constantly illustrated a complete misunderstanding of world politics, American sentiment and the aggressiveness of human nature. Thank goodness you weren't running the show during WWII or your flag would be the Rising Sun.
Greedy and grabbing? We could take any country anytime we want. Instead, not only have we never taken one inch of foreign land (except to bury our dead that defended that foreign land), we spend our blood and treasure defending yours! What a stupid thing you've said.
The reality is we did nothing militarily until the fundamentalists came for us. Then, we did what Europe (and all of us) should have done 20 years ago to prevent this mess...take them down. Isn't it obvious they would keep killing innocents worldwide until somebody did something? Are you totally blind??
If you think you were safer in Afghanistan with the Taliban than now, you are truly vapid. If you think the Taliban will embrace you, go to N. Pakistan and say hello, they're all there. Those people hate you and want you dead because of who YOU are - don't you understand that?! They don't hate Americans, Aussies, Japanese, Chinese -they hate all of us because we're infadels. They wish you were dead as well as I - what the hell is wrong with you ?
I'm not going to post politics anymore on this site...it's just too hopeless. The world has gone off to thinking sad little utopian ideals while America protects their borders. I hope Obama guts our military like Carter and the American public becomes totally isolationist. The world fell easily into war the last time we didn't interract before WWI. China won't take long to absorb their way right down to Australia...but whatever, I'm sure they'll treat you well if you're nice and make rice.
It's a tough world "Lazy" - so, grow some balls. LMAO

That doesn't really play in America anymore - but nice to know how it's loved overseas. That's the good thing about free markets, if nobody would watch the show wouldn't exist. Springer makes over $20MM each year from that show all in foreign markets.

Read "Confessions of an Economic Hitman", its eye opening and illustrates exactly how the US empire really works... It will push you into denial yet it explains so much. It should be of particular interest to anyone in Africa.
If stock is your business you should be aware of the plight of Overstock.com and Patrick Byrne's fight against a corrupt system. If not this hour long presentation might be of interest.
http://www.businessjive.com/
Google his name and the term "Naked Short Selling", read abit and you will see the scope of this corruption.
I like your Inflation Adjusted DOW chart. What inflation rate did you use? The official numbers? I never really trust "inflation adjusted" anything because the inflation number is such a movable feast, it's not what I call statistically honest... http://www.shadowstats.com/ Also what of survivor bias? Broad indexes always contain survivor bias which distorts the picture again.
You bring up 911... I think that anyone who has half a brain and has looked at the events of that day can see that it was a contrived event. There are so many things wrong with what was presented to the world as terrorist attacks that I don't know where to begin. I don't pretend to know who or how they where organised except to say that they where not as they where officially represented. I dare say that we have not yet seen the final objective that these events where designed to achieve. One wonders about the powers that the "Patriot Act" ushered in and what the true purpose of them is... one also wonders why Iraq was the first on the hit list when it so obviously had nothing to do with the supposed perpetrators. Fair enough, you did hit Afghanistan first, but only after being pushed in that direction by sounder reasoning.... anyway... once again all is not what it seems here.
Then we have the fight over South Ossetia, purportedly support for the Georgians is the reason that the US is there. In reality the world can see that its Russia and the US squabbling over the only non Russian controlled pipe line out of the area.
Its not hard to see that a great game is being played with oil as the center piece.
Anyway the point is the empire is corrupt and corruption is never something to admire and certainly does not make you the greatest.
Juice, you will find that most of us like the people of the US on a one for one basis BUT we very much mistrust your corrupt empire. I also find that most US citizens I talk to are not aware of just how the US functions in the world, they truly believe that their country is doing the right thing. Books like "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" give an insight as to why your actions raise the eyre of many of us out here.
Anyway mate, the thing is that we don't see that this attitude that "we are the best" that is so ingrained in your culture is justified in anyway. Many of us that have travelled to the US have the very same attitude that you have to the world... nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there. A little more humility would have us focusing on the US's redeeming features but instead we get this "we are it!" attitude and over exposure to popular American culture that many of us find hard to take. Good leaders lead with humility and wisdom, in truth the US has done neither.

I find it hard to explain to US citizens just how we see them... its complicated, an odd mix of liking for many of the people on a personal level yet horror at the leadership and the "system".
I was trying to find the number of US citizens with passports but there is no official number and quoted numbers range from 10 to 30%. Anyway its a low number and goes a long way to explaining the insularity of their community.

Even if you strongly disagree with someone, please don't insult them on the public forums as it only fans the flames. I've deleted posts from this thread that blatently insult other members. I see no reason that you would have to post "tee hee you are a sad man Juice" as it contributes nothing to your post and only enrages the member you insulted by name.
I especially don't like a thread about non-boating issues that gets out of hand unnecessarily and gets another member so enraged that he is now emailing other boatbuilders and encouraging them to not have anything to do with our site.
It was pointed out here http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/forum-questions-suggestions/forum-rules-code-conduct-11083.html that some members feel I have not adequately enforced the rules as of late, and I cannot argue with them. In general I think the community is strong, but I find your posts in this thread have crossed the line and are blatantly insulting another, and thus I have deleted a few.

actually Juice, I may not have seen as much of USA as you but I have seen a lot of it, an awful lot
i saw a sign near Housten, two years back, it said"every Texan, deserves 450 horses, with a pic of a pickup truck That says it all, really, you make up 3% of worlds population(somewhere there) and you use half worlds oil, you are incredibly greedy and grabbing, you have done more damage to the world than you will ever ever know, and during the Bush years you became hated Now I travel a lot, and I know that a certain % of you lot are very good people , but by the actions of the peasents there and the admin, you have made in unsafe for all westerners to travel in much of the world, frinstance I can not go to Afghanistan, Pakistan in North, and in Northern Africa I must where shirt which says NZ on it
yup, we kind of like prosperity around these parts. we also like to see it spread around to those that create it. called capitalism.
and many, many apologies for upsetting all of your travel plans, we really should stop playing with the tough guys. come to think of it, we must of really pissed-off all those soujourners to the french shores back in '17...or '41. fear yea not my brothers and sisters, just as soon as afganistan bloodies our latest administrations noses we'll be leaving your playgrounds entirely. i suppose that means you'll start complaining about our absence. then you'll boycott our stuff...don't worry, we'll boycott yours too. and then we can all go back to where we were a couple of hundred years ago and you guys in the lovely world of ours can repeat your cycle all over again.

Those days you were just late and unprepared.. Nowadays you have been making (training and funding) your own enemies to get the reason to be "vigilant"

Nowadays you have been making (training and funding) your own enemies to get the reason to be "vigilant"All in the good name of Freedom, Liberty, Democracy, etc., not to mention massive profits for the military-industrial complex. OOPS, sorry, I wasn't supposed to mention that last. And I promise, I won't mention the body-bags either.
Yeah, our foreign policy here in the US has taken a wrong turn, since at least the Viet Nam era, probably before that. We basically forgot -- or willfully ignored -- history, and the lessons about what works.
After WW II, what did we do to our conquered enemies? We disarmed them, down to the level of cap-pistols, kept our forces in place as both military and police protection, rebuilt their economies and infrastructures, coached their new governments along, and waited until they had fully stabilized before allowing them to re-establish their own limited military defenses. Result? Everyone loved us, and btw, now had more advanced industry than we ourselves had, since they got all new state-of-the-art equipment while we kept on using the old stuff that we had in place.
Lately, we go into some country whose government doesn't suit our fancy -- whether it works for them or not. We blow up the place, piss off everyone, choose a group we deem favorable (from those we've pissed off), and arm and train them, steal their resources, and leave the rest of the place in ruins. Then we can't figure out what went wrong, when a few years later, the very ones we favored are shooting at us with the very weapons we gave them. Remember the Taliban? They were still using muskets until we decided to use them to poke a stick in the eyes of the Russians. Remember Saddam? We were still sending him money until the very day he rolled into Kuwait. The list is longer than I have the stomach for.
Now, just to keep this rant on topic, I really, really hope that Obama can bring some sense to our foreign policy. That's going to be a tall order, though, since about a sixth -- at minimum -- of our budget goes to military.
Wish us luck, everyone, we're going to need it.

that's funny meanz, who said anything about compete.
you'll buy even more of our crap as we now thoroughly close our doors, ignore the world, and cork-screw head-first into the status of a 3rd world nation. here, we'll be producing large volumes of complete junk for you to buy at half the price of china. exactly where we come from meanz, which is roughly where we started.
but not too many voters study history.
you should too. and where you're world is headed is an ugly one indeed but not our problem anymore, right clmanges? we'll be busy infighting and steeling from one another. i know, i know...change...lots of change.
about all we're going to have in our pockets when this administration is finished with this place.
enjoy your competition world. have a ball. oh yeah, that's right, we're probably closing our borders too so if the water gets a little hot out there, you might try australia or maybe one of the poles. maybe they still have a heart.

Thanks for these examples of nice hydrodynamic body shapes, Sean. :D
Well, I'll try to brief you shortly on the situation.
We have few guys here which are proud to be americans (and they have a right to be so) but with political views which, in my eyes, make them look like a right-wing version of Masrapido.
Then we have (or had?) Lazeyjack who didn't agree with their political views. And it seems that Lazeyjack doesn't like to choose words when expressing his disagreement.
And then we have the moderator who seem to be affraid of loosing some american members of the site so he banned Lazeyjack.
It's like watching a political tv soap opera. Everyone is against everyone else. And now we also have some nice chicks on tv, thanks to you. That should help rise the audience, and probably some other things.

yup, that's correct. we'll sell you stuff. hell, we'll sell all sides whatever the world needs to wipe itself out. we just won't be there, but we'll cheer you on in fine fashion, with our piss-poor excuse for beer, cheap bourbons and american style football…sure will miss the imported stuff.
oh yeah, by the way. we currently don’t make much of anything so my first guess is that in the not-so-distant future our junk will be complete junk. we're certainly not going to sell the world weapons we use for ourselves, that won't happen. but we'll give you whatever you want in the way of cheap stuff, by the gross.
so when that world war of your’s comes crashing on your shores once again, you'll have to do a break-even calculation on whether to pay for the good stuff, which you can get from germany if that’s not the problem again, or finland maybe. itally if you're looking for a fine shotgun that is in short supply and also doesn't work. england if you’re looking for things that leak oil. don't count on china, that will most certainly be your problem.
absolutely correct my friend, we'll sell you whatever you want. almost.

LJ got banned for PERSONAL INSULTS AND NAME CALLING !! not because of what he thinks, not because he disagreed with someone,, but because he got PERSONAL. and Jeff is WAY more then a mod.,, he is the OWNER , who PAYS for this site to be here, and im PRETTY sure it didnt have ANYTHING to do with some of us being americans,,,,, it takes money to run this site,, and when 1 person can cause this site to loose hundreds, thousands of dollars,, what ta hell do ya think should happen??
i like LJ ,, we've had our differences, and arguments,, but we were respectful of each other,, and i do consider him a friend,,, but he crossed the line.

So much love. . . .that's what I'm talking about. . . . .Ya know, I have never met anyone that was any good at anything that didn't--jump up and down--and break things from time to time and didn't have a strong opinion about how to break it.

A good argument, YES but when it gets personal and threats are made or implied. That becomes too much over the top... May we all be different, (can't spell that French phrase - the accent alludes me), else this place would be tooo bloody boring....

Sean,
Where did your get the information that Christopher Walken (not Walkin) was a US Navy Seal please? You must appreciate that checking facts before I put pen to paper, so to speak, is because I was taught to be cautious. Thus, a swift Google has prompted this post. I usually ignore your inaccuracies, but this time, I thought I'd call you out and see what you're holding?
Walken was born in 1943 and started acting in 1952. I cannot find any reference to military service, but if you have evidence to the contrary please post it here. As for his dancing skills, I am not surprised he's good. :D :D :D :D
He is a trained dancer, after all.

I look forward to your justification for your claim .
Brian.
The accent eludes you. Allude is as in allusion.
1. indirect reference: an indirect reference to somebody or something
He made an allusion to marital problems.
2. act of alluding: the act of making an indirect reference to somebody or something

C' est la guerre!
(is a nicely ironic phrase used as an excuse for anything which goes wrong, often due to incompetence (sometimes one's own) or circumstances beyond ones control. A less elegant phrase would be "Hey, what can you do?")

The night Obama won I fell asleep on the couch watching the voting results at around 10:00 PM, and awoke at midnight to the sound of fireworks going off at the nearby street corner. My house is two blocks from the U of M stadium (the Big House) and the neighborhood is predominately but not exclusively students.
From midnight until 2:30 AM that historic evening, the whole city seem alive, I could hear a Marti Gras like celebration in the heart of downtown about a mile away. I tried my best to go back to sleep after the fireworks, but it was useless. I tried putting on the TV, but even the TV had become drowned out by 2:30 AM (local bars stop serving at 2:00 AM). It sounded like a marching band was marching on the city, I could hear the drums, real marching band style drums in the mix of a cheering crowd's merry making.
I put my pants and shoes on and ventured into the night armed with my camera and walked to the source of the noise two blocks away. About 300 people, mostly college students had marched and gathered at the end of Greene street in front of the football stadium's gated entrance. They were just joyfully cheering with shouts from the crowd like "OBAMA ROCKS" standing above the rest of the ruckus.
Three or four unmarked police cars with several officers in each car watched the peaceful celebration quite attentively, but made no efforts to interfere.

It took me several days to get all of my sleep back, but it was a small price to pay.

Pericles, I plead a failing mental retrieval system. - I was thinking something like "Viva la difference" (which I can't spell or pronounce), and stuffed up elsewhere, - - Ho-Hum for this one, me, seems dumb? - - what is the meaning of the other phrase, and for the life of me I cannot think what I was thinking but meant "illude" (to evade) I guess? but then "escapes" would work - the incorrect choice just sounded nice?
View Full Version : Congrats USA
