wondered if there could be a thread showing the best and the worst metal boats we have seen
kick it off with the best I have seen
this was a Dutchman, unpainted on frames only, with timber houses,

This is a very nice design, if I do say so myself (and I do say so, myself). This is the Moloka'i Strait 75 from my office. The hull is steel, and the deck house is aluminum.

This boat is built by JFA in France (concarneau), they build the most impressive metal boats. That classic hull is made of aluminum, the deck and structures are mahogany. I took this pic last week, the Britair boat is their getting ready for the vendee globe.

nice one Eric, loads of space on shortish loa,
and the beautiful sheer on the sailing yacht, I love those plumb house faces and the beauty of those hulls is they are sweet downhill

myself and the owner engaged Bos and Carr to design/build, for a work boat there are some great skills forewards

Must be quite a trick mating those up, what with differing Cte and the inability to use welding.

no, you can use a two sided bar, one side steel other alloy it is explosion fused together and very expesive, or you can flange using isolating gaskets

Yeah, flanges and gaskets was my thought. But certainly more involved than just using buzz boxes.

This is the modified Robert's Euro 1200 my friend (the owner) and I have built very recently. The engineering job, the exterior co-design and some handwork was mine, the interiors and huge part of handwork was provided by the other guy.
Steel hull (hot-sprayed with zinc), aluminum superstructure, twin engines. Triclad bars were used for steel-aluminum joints.
It has sailed all over the Adriatic sea this summer and we plan to take her to the French coast for the next summer. :)

The third photo has some jigsaw-like lines because it's been composed of several photos joined to form a "panoramic" view. I'm not good in that kind of stuff. ;)

The first of this serie was the Aldabaran build by JFA for an american customer. Designed by Barracuda Yacht Design (Madrid). It was so gorgeous JFA devoloped a whole line shown here:

http://www.jfa-yachts.com/HTMLs/start_uk.htm

I know another yacht just as gorgeous called Camelia build by Vitters design by Dubois of which I think is even more beautifull and fast!

I rate these guys the best I have seen worldwide, and I have seen yards all overthe world
Bos and Carr NZ
They design all their own structure, no matter whose design it is, , and use Maxsurf and Rhino 3

I'm curious about that... What is that makes them the best of the best :?:

well I knew someone would ask and rightly so
s0 they are so very accurate, everything is perfectly in its place, all seams are fair, joint fit up is exact When they pass on the hull to another compnay for fitting out, things like the deck, are exactly same both sides the c/l is true
The frames and b/h.s are square to the cl and dead plumb, all details are thought through and exact the tankage detail which is part of the structure is well thought out, there are no stringers which they refuse to use, and hence no water traps
I no longer consiider myself in their league and so far I have not seen anyone else who come s close, there seems to be many very good yards in Holland, but these guys are special
And even people they have fallen out with say this
The boats can go (unbogged) but to get a superyacht finish then off coarse you need a light layer of filler over the topsides
And lastly, Scott Carr has mastered design CAD and thats a huge plus for a boatbuilder, not to have to rely on some guy in some remote office driving a pc
http://www.bosandcarrboatbuilding.co.nz/contact.html
look foryouself in their site you can see a 90 tonne superyacht keel, built for Fitzroy yachts, when name builders get another yard to do the tricky stuff , it speaks for itself

Although more specialised in aluminium(which is even harder) Royal Huisman has a name: http://www.royalhuismanshipyard.com/ They build Athena.
Vitters build Adele. http://www.vitters.com/
Or Holland Jachtbouw http://www.hollandjachtbouw.nl who are building Athos

These are about the most beautiful yachts on earth and these are only the Dutch Yards.

Lursssen in Germany are quite famous when it comes to the biggest motor yachts. Perini Navi when it comes to the largest "buckets" (somewhere between a motor yacht and a sailing yacht.)

I guess when it comes to the top segment in yacht building all mentioned yards are very competitive and equally skilled although somewhat different specialized.

This not the thread for why!!so wont go there
When Huismans yacht (forget name but was hood design) needed warranty work in NZ they chose Bos and Carr

These huge , expensive , enviroinmentally hostile boats are called " Penis Extenders" . Those of us so fortunate to be unaflicted by the common mental illness called "Penis Extender Envy " are totally unimpressed by such proof positive of the owner's even more common mental illnesses called "Obsessive Greed" , and "Insecurity".We'd be far more impressed by one of Nik Skeat's Wylos, or a boat like Winston Bushnells 36 footer that he built in the late 80's with a total investment of $14,000 by launch time , or $17,000 by the time he headed out on his Pacific circumnavigation. The boat was a work of art, most of the interior made of teak that he found in dumpsters and maple burls that he found in the bush. Now that's impressive!
They remind me of the time I was cruising the South Pacific in my first boat , in my early 20's . I was cruising on a shoestring budget , with minimal equipment . When I looked at the boats cruising on a big budget, with all the toys , I couldn't help notice that the owners were three times my age. It was clear to me that if I insisted on all that extravagence , I would be their age before I got out cruising. No thanks. If you wait until you are rich enough to afford such luxury , you will be so old that you will need all the penis extension you can get.
In all my Pacific cruising I have rarely seen such boats our cruising remote areas. That is not what they are for. They spend most of their lives in marinas, going only for the rare day sail, fulfilling their purpose of impressing the naive, which can only be done in areas where there are huge numbers of naive and gullible to impress. Keeping them shiney is a full time job , both for the workers and the owners who have to organise it all. They are invariably far more stressed out and having no more fun than the freer ones in reasonable boats, who's lives are not lived in slavery to their egos..
Almost all the boats I see cruising remote ares of the world are small modest boats , often built in someone's backyard on a shoestring budget, by capable and resourceful people, with far less insecure reasons to cruise. Out in the real world , "Penis Extender" boats rarely make an appearance.
I remember seeing a mega boat pass me in Sidney. I thought "They spend all that time and money persueing "Efficiency" ,but for what I'm trying to accomplish, my 31 footer is far more efficient than that boat would ever be."
If you gave me one of those boats . What would I do? Sell it quick , take out enough money to cruise till pension time and give the rest to women's shelters, food banks and homeless shelters, buying in the process a bit of security. Then I would continue what I'm doing. If life aint broke , don't fix it.
They are monuments to a fragile ego, not practical cruising boats.

Just stating another way of looking at things,no doubt culture shock for those incapable of thinkling outside of "Groupthink".
I'd hate to see anyone of low income conned into believing that this is the wealth they need before being allowed to go cruising.
I assume your definition of "Highjacking" is to post anything that you don't agree with, or which challenges your cast in stone way of thinking.

Whoosh.....

That one has decent proportions at least....designer??....builder?? Looks like visibility from the helm will be questionable and the windshield is quite ugly...but those are details.

you are dead right, the vis from helm was bad, adn I questioned the guy about this, he said he sat on high chair!!!
www.zwaanjachtbouw.nl think the designer name is on the pic, I have some pics of her from close up stern etc The Dutch make heavy use of SS,
this is cat b had couple largish volvos where I think small pair pushing to disp speed would have been better suited The metalwork was excellent, the interior I will not comment upon

You may nor like the boat, but you must confess, the courtesy flag is of sufficient size, even for the proud Turks.
Apoise, Lürssen, 2006, 220ft

only cans and tins allowed here? Or may I post one of my chipboard crap here once?
