I put this here because it's not a serious project!:p :p :p

Updated daily or monthly or what ever, when I get something
done!

Day one:

Form done and set up.
I don't think the wind will blow
it over.

Day two:

Mold frames done and chines cut.
Needs a little bracing.

Looks like it could be a nice little project - just remember to takethe blocks out before you 'float your boat' or it may become a submarine!

Thanks SW,

I had plans to build a 16' scow, in a nice air conditioned shop!
With some help! Well, first day, no one showed up, "we" were
busy! Second day, Well, "There's a car show this weekend"!

So I am building a 12" row sail, sort of dory, in the driveway
at home, the shop is nearly 10 miles away!

I have enough material to build half a dozen of these!

I can get it in my shop at home once it is off the form, I will
make a cradle for it on wheels so I can work around it this
winter!

Thanks again for your reply!

Well...............at least your driveway IS airconditioned, sort of! You're getting there - ad most importantly you'e started, nothing like what you intended but your going and tat has got to be good!

Day 3&4:

Made the pattern for the stem, laminated a block to cut it
from!

Trimmed a bush that was in my way!

Leveled and braced the mold frames!

Started the lay out on the keel!

Transom frame done with temp skin, fitted temporary on
the jig, it will be planked later, and I mean "planked"!

Also got all the long pieces cut and planed, battens, sheers,
chines and enough to do all the stiffeners!

Day 8

Can't see much today. Lots of planing and sanding took
place and I went to the store and got the plywood.
Last time they had a storm down south, they shipped all
the OSB and plywood down there and when they restocked
it was a lot higher!

Next step is to paint all the frame where the skin goes and
places that are hard to get to later.

Rough cut the transom planking also.

BHOFM
09-02-2008, 01:23 PM
Day 9-12

We are in for some bad weather so I covered the boat with
tarps and taped and weighted it so it won't blow off!

I got the patterns made for the side skins so I can cut them
and get a couple of coats of paint on the inside surface.
Do the layout for the rudder, dagger board, and dagger
board case in the shop. And get the transom planks planed
and sealed on the inside and seam surfaces.

Day 12

All the panels are cut, sides and bottom, sealed and painted
on the inside surfaces. The frame is sealed and painted on
the mating surfaces and hard to get to areas. The transom
is rough cut and sealed on the inside and edges.

The blanks for the rudder and dagger board are laminated.

Now I get to watch the paint dry!

The shop is clean and orderly!

I was told "we" are going shopping! And out to eat!

Then it is time to mow the grass again and do some
yard work!

I got started a couple weeks later than I wanted and the
weather has put me a little more back. But I think over
all I am in good shape to get it in the shop before we
have any cold weather to speak of! It was 61`f this
morning and will get in the high 70's! We have had snow
in later Sept. a few times!

Off to the mall!:P :P :P :P :P :P

Day 14

Sides are skinned. Almost had a big mess. Got the two
coats of paint on the frame and inside of the starboard
panels and got them clamped on. Then took a 20 minute
break and came back and started putting in the screws,
had about 40+ in before I saw that the panels had slipped
down about an inch. I had left enough overage to catch it,
but all my lines where the battens were were wrong. Worked
around it and got the other side perfect.

Got the bottom edge all sanded and sealed, ready for a
couple coats of paint and the bottom skin.

Speaking of Beavers, we have a problem on the lake here.
The beavers steal the foam out from under the boat docks.
They have to put a shell around them, some use plastic and
some build a plywood box and cover it with aluminum flashing
material.

It is funny to wake up early and see a large block of
foam going across the lake. You can't see the beaver,
just a self propelled block of foam.

They are natures top designers. Build to last and recycle.

They are protected so you can't even yell at them.

Thanks for the reply BTW!

Are you using epoxy?

No, and not much glue. The joints are all painted before
assembly. There are four coats on the frame and four on
the skin and it is assembled while the last coat is still
wet.

Just like it was done in 1930. In the instruction they said
to put strips of muslin on all the seams and use Kuhls bedding
compound. I am just using a lot of paint! They also said
that Allen and Clarke would make a sail for it for $42!

masalai

beavers suk,,,, they try to ruin my railroad!!,,, tell the "dock people" to use chicken wire, cheap and will last forever.

I don't think they can use the wire, it might harm the poor
little critters! They would not let us use wire cable for mooring
lines on the buoys because they tried to chew through it, we
had to use chain and it scratched the boat. I had an old piece
of fire hose around mine and they chewed on it as well.

Went shopping,, got some more screws, and the caulk for
the dagger board case and some glass cloth for the inside

Had light rain several times through the day.

No progress to report on the boat it self!

I have built several using epoxy. I just want to build this
one the old way.
It won't be left in the water more than a day and it will be
stored inside.

If it lasts 3 or four years, it will most likely be longer than
I am able to use it.

Also, around here wooden boats have no value. I know of
a dozen large sail boats that are just rotting away and I
am not aware of one that is on the lake.

At the yacht club, if you don't have a Hunter, Freedom
or Island Packet they won't even speak to you.

Oh so sad this "brand snobbery" - do they drive BMW's too?

Their house keepers drive BMW's, most of them drive
Porsches, Vipers, MB roadsters or Jag's and an occasional
Rolls.

You have to understand we live in the center of Wal-Mart,
Tysons Chicken, and JB Hunt trucking.

Last week there was a Rolls in the drive thru at McD's!
You see as many as ten or more Vettes at every stop
light!

One of our church members drives an Aston Martin and
leaves the keys in it most of the time. He says, "It's just
a damned old car."

a year. I do a lot of glass etching on them.
Tourists want a $15 clock. Not a $1500 one.

My "shop" is 12'X16', you have to keep it fairly clean or
you can't work in it. It has work benches on three sides.

I'll get a good pic before we put the boat inside when it
is all neated up.

Hoping today we will get it turned over.

We have a noise ordinance, you can't run power tools
before 8am and not after 9pm. So having it inside does't
help get much more done. Just it is not going to be 80`f
for much longer.

Also, the ordinance, you have to keep the area picked up.
Out side projects like this also have a 90 day time limit
when you can see them from the street.

We have a lot of money invested in our house and I am
glad we have rules to help maintain property values.

They don't do anything unless there is a complaint, I feel
sure none of the neighbors would say anything, but I like
to be a "good" neighbor as well. They think I am the crazy
old man that's building a boat in the drive way. The kids
love to "check" it out! They have a million questions.
We are on a dead end street and it is a very close knit
bunch of people. Much as a family, the way life was a
few years past. Most have been here a number of years.
My neighbor to the south has been in her house over fifty
years.
My family came to this area in the 1820's! My
Great grand father founded Spears Vinegar here in the
1890's! This is "home"! We own the bank BTW!
It is also one of the highest per capita income places in

We have an immigration problem and in some parts of town
they destroyed the property value. Something had to be done!
They used a house until it needed to be torn down
and then moved on. There were drug labs on every corner!
They have a handle on it now, but still there are problems!

Day 28

Together with the Technical University of Delft I am building a 1:6 scale model of the Rietveld chair at the moment. I deliver all the drawings of the parts scaled and they cut it out with a laser cutter in MDF.

It is not finished yet as it is on the electronic drawing board with me at the moment.

Real CAD/CAM though

OK!

The plan was to get the boat to this point so it could be
put inside.

Now I need to get the shop in top order to make working
around the boat possible.

I have a couple of clocks to make,, need to eat..

I will start posting updates when there is something to
show, not daily in most cases.

The yard needs mowed again, and I need to arrange the
shed to get all the extra stuff in.

Also, the 12 to 18 hour days I have put in on this have
taken a toll, I need to get some rest.

When the snow comes, I will have a nice warm place to
work and I have six months to get it done. Next spring
I can do the mast, put a couple more coats of paint on
the outside of the hull and put the new trailer together.
Make a sail. Go to the lake.

I am going to order the hardware I need from Duckworks
next week.

Thanks to all that have commented.

Edit:

The wife will be going to Europe for a couple
of months, leaving this weekend so I will have
to do the house and related stuff while she
is gone.

Little different face and finish, this is one I build in several versions and
it is a little cheaper than the custom units. I get $250 for these. The
larger ones run between $1500 and $2500 depending on how much
etching is done on the glass, I can spend 30+ hours on some of
the glass alone. The smaller ones come with a stand or they can
be wall hung.

Got the yard all nice, helped get the house all cleaned so
I don't have too much to do while K is gone. A lady will
be coming every two weeks to help with the house while
K is gone. I have to do the dishes and clothes.

Got the shears sanded and the stiffeners rounded off and
some temp spreaders in so I could take the frames out to
seal and paint the inside. Stern knees and bow hook are
the next items on the list.

It is not bad at all working around the boat in the shop
even with the limited space. Tools are always at hand.
And I don't have to run extension cords all the time.

It will roll if you are not careful, need to get some blocks
to keep it in one spot.

I use a clear contact sheet from Hobby Lobby and their
etching compound. I print out the design on regular paper
and glue that to the contact sheet already on the glass
and then cut out the design with hobby knife.

Now you can get a machine to do it all in a mater of seconds.

Final paint.

Next it goes on the trailer.

It only eats the glass. Paint it on, wait 5 minutes or so,
not important, it gets harder to get off the longer you
wait, wash it off. You can reapply to areas you want to
high lite a bit.
I use cheap throw away brushes.

Materials, new trailer, new trolling motor, new rigging pieces,

ain't line till it goes on the boat, leather, carpet for the bunks,
and a hundred other things.

$904.00 US!

I have a lot of the cedar left, along with sandpaper and

Well, it has been a couple of weeks.

Sold my truck and had to get a trailer done to take its
place. The truck was thirty years old, bought it new,
and had very little done to it. Still had the original
muffler clutch, brakes, third battery, first set of replae
ment tires, original spare never out of the holder.
A little rust here and there. A real beater.
Put a trailer hitch on the car.

Working on all the little stuff that will drive you nuts.
Like clamps to hold it on the trailer and the mast supports
for trailering.

Finished the oars!

Finished the clamps that will hold it on the trailer!

http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/8752/clamps.jpg

Finished two of the supports that will hold the mast, boom
and oars while trailering.

They hook on the seats and are pulled together in the
middle. The boom goes on the outside one so as to not
have to take all the lines off.

http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/7039/crutch1.jpg

This one goes on the mast step. It will be adjustable.
It has rained nearly ten inches in the last week or so
and they say three more days of it, so I have time to
get a lot of little stuff done. But I need to have the
supports and mast setup to mark and drill this piece.
Then finish it and put the felt on the dowels.

Well, it is now registered and the trailer is tagged.

In Arkansas, home made boats must be inspected by
the Game and Fish Commission and a number assigned
to the hull and stamped in the transom.

I really didn't want the title to say "home made".

The lady at the DMV looked in her book and in 1949 some
one made and marketed a boat named "Breeze Baby",
that is the model name of mine BTW.

So it is registered as a rebuilt 1949 Breeze Baby!

No inspection needed, and I can use my own numbers.

First order is to get the yard done up right. Spent most

raking, bagging, hauling, it looks pretty good..

During the rain, I did manage to get the battery box and

This will be a crazy weekend on the lake, I would not go
out there for love nor money!! And especially with a new
boat.

Maybe a week, maybe two. My time line was for the last
of May, first of June, so I am right on time.

Got the cover done, it won't get wet now....

Got the wires under the floors for the trolling motor.
Need to make the panel for the terminals. Battery box is
done, battery in it, wires and quick connect are installed.
Need a piece of tubing for the vent. Need to get the anchor
done. Still no baskets under the seats. Brass plate for the
transom to protect it from the motor clamp.

Need to raise the center bunk on the trailer a little. Have
to slide the boat back to do that, it will have to be hooked
to the car to keep it from tilting back. Need a connector
on the trailer for lights.

Need list:

Sail
Life jackets
Fire extinguisher
Anchor line
Horn
Water proof holder for papers.

I read that list several times and I must say
what no beer?

when you complete the cooler
then we can talk about project progress :)

ps
beer goes on the list with fire extinguisher and life vest
think of it like an emergency supply
I'm pretty sure if they do a safety check out on the water you are going to be asked if you have beer
the good stuff
not that pilsner swill

On danger of being banned and or whipped, we are non
drinkers but for a very very rare glass of wine with dinner.

So our emergency supplies will have spring water and

Oh bugger, I thought it was one bottle a day, and I got me a Darwin stubbie (you know those squished shorter beer bottles that only hold 275ml or something), well a Darwin stubby was designed to differentiate the drinkers from those with wee willies - some say a Darwin stubbie holds about 5 litres.... well I ordered me one of those, so I can truthfully say "Oh just a standard stubbie of beer?" and get really smashed - Sean would love those bottles!

Oops, sorry BHOFM, for pirating your thread, and a word to the wise, if you don't drink, it is OK to lie on the net and claim to be a roaring drunk... - sometimes - when no one is looking:D:D:D:D

What material? Is that a tarp? Didn't know you could get it in such a light color, all the stuff in my hardware store is a yukky dark blue or green. How does the double-sided tape work? I have been sewing mine but that looks easier.

Tyvek?

It is chicken house curtain material. Carpet tape sticks to it
like crazy. The loose piece you see in the picture is the repair
tape that is the same material and is even stickier than the
carpet tape. I used it to reinforce the seams and where the
eyelets will be. This is my first sail from this stuff, and I
had no helper. Some one to help would be a big plus. I
had a little trouble keeping the rope from getting stuck
to the tape.
I took a little tuck here and there, and it looks like it will
have plenty of body. The luff and foot have 2" of roach
and the leach has 4". I am going to try it with out battens,
can add them later if needed.

Finish it up today and maybe I can run it up tomorrow
and see how it looks.

BTW, the material is about $1.50 a running foot and is
14' wide. It is 4.5oz. It also comes in a 10 10 weave that
is 5.5oz, I used the 7 7 weave, it is a bit cheaper as well.
The flash from the camera make it look denser than it
really is, it is about 50% Transparent. UV resistant and
blocks IR about 80%

The plans call for 65sf of sail, but the design weight of
the hull is 300lbs, my hull weights under 200lbs, so I
went with a shorter mast and 50sf of sail. If the boat
handles OK, I will add a gunter and the other 15sf of
sail.

It is sort of a modified leg of mutton rig as it is.

The company that makes this material is just three
miles down the road from my house, they also make
covers for sport fields, baseball, football, and so
on. Covers for dump trucks and liners for land fills.

Here is a picture without the flash, that is a piece of copy
paper with a black dot under the sail.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/4899/dote.jpg

Here is the completed sail. I tried a roller, but found a soft
rag better for pressing out the seams. Seemed to do better
and was much quicker and easier on the hands.
Again without the flash on the camera.

http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/4821/doneeeee.jpg

BTW, I have florescent lights and it give the material that funny yellow
green look, it is translucent white, very pleasing color. Kind of high tech
looking.

It is trying to rain, but I had to do it.

The pocket is a little far back and a little
high, but this ain't no racing boat. When it
caught a little air the shape was good, no
wrinkles to speak of. It goes up the mast
very easily, move it up and down and the
lacing tighten up fine.

Looks pretty good. I must see if I can get that material, there is a farm supply store nearby should have it. I am planning a LOM sail too, with a double-wishbone sprit carried higher than your's, so I should be able to cut it flat. I want to try a double thickness sail so I can open it up to double the area downwind. The wishbone is in 2 pieces, hinged to permit that. I like to experiment.

Well, I have spent two days doing all the little crap you
forget. Scraping paint off the bright work and touching
up, stop for the tiller. Shortened the fore stay.
Went looking for some nice letters and numbers, all they
have is the black stick ons...

Looking for some gold or brass colored. Found some real
brass, $7 each, I need sixteen. Out of budget.

Still need to make a sail bag.

Tomorrow I will try to get the mast up and all the stays
adjusted. And maybe some pictures.

I am making an anchor with a plastic can and concrete.
I made one, with some old concrete I had, still powder,
no lumps, but it did not set, waited a week and it was
still soft. Could poke an awl right through it. Dumped it
and went to Lowes and got a ten pound bag and did it
over, it set in about three hours this time.
I left enough space at the top for the line to lay in the
can I hope. Our lake has a mud bottom for the most
part and fifty feet is more than enough line. There are
places where it is near two hundred feet ten feet from the
shore.

I am sure I have forgotten something, planning on a
launch next week???

This could drive a man to drink!!!:P :P :P

Maiden Voyage of Unnecessary Complications!

Almost no wind. Every thing went perfect. No "Complications"!

Rig went up and down like a dream.

Sailed for nearly three hours and maybe went a mile??

Had a little company as well. The boys had just got the cat and
had some trouble getting it rigged, helped them get going.

"Scenery" was very nice.

No video. Maybe when there is some wind.

A great project if a little slow in the fitting out. If nothing else it shows where the effort goes. The hull is but a small part of the overall job.

The stern is a bit beamy for my liking. I prefer long and slender. Not short and dumpy. A view bow on would be welcome.

One problem is the boat attracts too much attention. There were a dozen or
more looking at it when I got to the launch ramp. The rangers stopped to
look and gave me a quickie inspection, I didn't have a horn. They let me
launch any way. Life jackets are their main concern. And fire extinguisher,
not required if there is no fuel on board. I have a small kitchen extinguisher.

A shot under way, if just barely. After nine hours
of tacking, reaching, running and drifting, I was
ready for the locker room.

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/1114/lake1k.jpg

I feel real good that the only thing I had to change
was the out haul, added a block and cleat. I also redid
the hold downs on the trailer to make it a bit quicker
to get it in the water. I had to tighten the rigging up
after a few hours, but that is just normal stuff I think.
Everything else worked as planned.
I had to get a larger cooler, ran out of water first trip out.
Had to cut it short.

Since the project is complete, this is the last post for
me.

Thanks to all that replied, and those that just looked, you

Can't believe this thread has popped up again!

Well while is is here, The boat gets taken out of storage
Monday and a good cleaning and checking over. I looked
at it the other day and a couple places the filler over the
screws has popped out and I am going to try and seal the
seams in the transom a little better this year. All the gear
has been stored indoors so I am sure it is fine.

I spent most of the winter building RC airplanes, even
the
wife got into it and build one, a rubber band jobie.

I have spent the last couple months redoing a couple
RC sail boats I build years ago, about twenty years in
fact.

One just needed some cleaning and the electrics checked,
cleaned and greased. A good compounding and some wax.

The other I refinished the deck, all new running hardware
and rigging. Sanded it with 2000. compounded, polished
and waxed.
Put some wheels on the stand to get it to the water a bit
easier, twenty years ago carrying a sixty pound boat to
the water was not problem, but things change.

Also I have two new Grand kids. Girls, thirteen years old
from Brazil, their folks were lost in a flood a couple years
ago. My daughter is not adopting them, we are going to
see they get a good education and keep them healthy
and let them decide later what they want to do. Twins
BTW and cute as bugs.. One has a bad infection we are
dealing with right now, a bone chip under a tooth.
They are getting new bikes tomorrow.
They started school Tusday, whole new ball game for them
but they like school and are extremely smart so they will
pick it up quickly. Sixth graders.

I lost my son in law just before Christmas so my daughter
is a single mom with five.
