I won't bore you with the details but basically I am redesigning a mast for a 6m trailable yacht. Anyway was just wondering what aplliances I need to have at the top of the mast - wind indicator and lights etc, but also - if they are not above the top of the sail, how long a stick do they need to be on so that they aren't affected by the flow across the sail...? or any other ideas for locations...?

Your time will be much appreciated in replying,

Do you need any "appliances"? If you want to minimize the wiring and harware, I suggest a flat metal plate extending forward where the tri-light, anchor light, windvane, VHF antenna, etc. can be installed. A plastic conduit for the wire harness makes it possible to install new wires or add on. The trick is to add a "fish line" with the wiring. That is a length of twine along with the wires. When you add or change a wire, tie another length of twine to it. This way it is always available.

thank you - those were the types of appliances I meant - sounds a bit dappy I know but collectively what would you call them...?

It beats me. They are usually called instrument cluster and navigation lights. I don't know of a single name for everything.

"Masthead appliance cluster" would be descriptive.

Or even "masthead fittings" which would get around having them sound like a washer and drier ;-)
