Quietest Kicker?

Ahoy hoy,


I have a 15.5' Crestliner tri hull with a Johnson 40. Yes, it's underpowered, but still it trolls too fast so I got thinking about mounting a small kicker. It would also keep hours and carb gumming off the big motor.

What my question is, what size kicker would be ideal, and quiet? I've never owned a motor smaller than a 6, but I've seen 2s go by on canoes full throttle and they sound like 2hp eggbeaters - FAR louder than a 40 at idle.

So, would it be better to run something like a 2 at higher throttle or a 4 at lower throttle? Also, I do have a 42lb. thrust Minn Kota, but I'm thinking it'd have to run near full throttle to move the boat at trolling speed thus killing the battery very quickly.

Here's the boat. You'll see that there's not much room for a kicker so it'd have to be pretty small.

5 hp four stroke outboard at half throttle is very quiet and very fuel efficient, look around there are some pretty neat new motors out there

5 hp sounds about right. Given the lack of transom space you might need to go with a bracket. Do you want remote steering and throttle or do you plan to use an extension handle and stand at the stern to operate it?

at what rpm is that motor trolling should be around 800rpm
if this is to fast and you are just looking to slow down how about a trolling plate
