The helm

In my boats when I’m at the helm I usually have a paddle in my hand. I have almost no experience with helms that have a wheel. Are there advantages or disadvantages to having the spokes extended beyond the rim? Is there a rule of thumb for determining the number of spokes and the wheel diameter?

Spokes make it easier to lash the wheel. With modern self steering systems they are more for looks. I don't like them because they they really hurt your hands if the wheel spins.
