I have just purchased an unfinished little steel tugboat 20'. It has a 2-71 Gray Marine engine and transmission. The shifting into forward was almost impossible but thanks to some advice on another thread it is now free'd up. The problem I have is that the gear change was never hooked up and I don't think this can be operated with a morse cable setup.
Anyone out there have any ideas or drawings/photos of a good gear change system?

Most of the early boats had mechanical shift.

That usually meant a pipe linkage and a hefty pull on a 2 -3ft ft lever .

For some boats the shift was set in the floor and the operating lever could be pulled up from a sleve to clear the floor from an ankle breaker.
