Framed mast.

Hope this is the right place for this question.

I am in the process of building a 12' daysailer.

I want to build as much as possible myself, blocks and
hardware and such.

I plan on using polytarp sails, cost thing.

I found this on a framed mast, thought it was very workable
and would be easy to have internal lines as well.

I don't see the point of having the lines inside the mast. It is just an unnecessary complication.

The mast is a great idea. I built a hollow mast from 3/4" fir planks, but the thin plywood would be even lighter (presuming you do not need the strength). I built a 14' sloop to enter in a $50 sailboat race at the Lake Stevens Aquafest. I used all salvaged lumber, plastic and other junk to build a pretty nice little daysailer, we won the race.

I would also make the corners on your mast as rounded as possible so it does not mess up the airflow as much. You might also see if you could make it more tear drop shaped instead of square, it will improve the performace of the sail noticably. I am going to try this my self on my next project, using 1/8 in doorskin plywood.

I made my sails out of Tyvek house wrap, it makes a better sail than blue trap, it more durable and better looking. It can either be sewn or taped with 2-sided duct tape or use the special Tyvek tape on it (very sticky). I have also used cloth first-aid tape on it. Normal packing or masking tape will not stick to Tyvek, you need something more sticky.

Thanks, I was going to go with a 2 /12 by 3 1/2.
And tapper the top 1/5th to 2 /12 by 2 1/2

The house wrap sounds like something to look into.

Can you buy it in small pieces?

If all goes as planned, the hull should be around
200lbs, so strength should not be an issue. It will
just tip over before it hurts anything!

Any pictures of the $50 yacht????

That is about as crazy as our sunup to sundown regattas
on a 6 mile course with nineteen buoys!
