Was spending my online Forum time over at WoodenBoat but think I will be spending more here.
Perhaps we will see more of them drift here in the future.
Some pretty savvy people have posted over in those Forums, like to see them here.
Or so says I.
Edited: to clean out stuff that I was rash to post last night.
:o
Hi, Dave. Nice to see you here. Quiet 'n' peaceful-like, isn't it?

If I wanted to wade in blood and gore I would still be living on 'thioty thoid and thoid' in Greenpert, Brooklyn.

Hi Dave
I have to agree that things have changed a lot at WB forum. I visit there less and less but it is still the place to go if you love wooden boats. I have learned many things from that forum. I sure hope it doesnt self destruct.
I know your knowledge will also be appreciated here.

Whereever you go, there you are! :)
Different place, different rules. I love sailboats.
Pax!
Dave, I've been spending a lot of time on the arrangements, outfit, & shop drawings for the reproduction of the 1927 vintage 59-ft Burgess staysail schooner "Nina" currently under construction at Covey Island Boatworks. The usual juggling of quarter-inches to make a modern yacht look like it has absolutely no modern features under it's 1920's skin. Fussy things like, "How do you hide twin diesels in a classic interior layout?" Lots of fun, but never enough time. Next up looks like an 1890's Crowninshield 90-ft gaff schooner. I love my job, I love my job, I love my job!
Dave Fleming
10-20-2003, 01:59 AM
Mike, am I correct in thinking you have been doing a bit of work for Covey Island recently?
NINA was one of my 'first loves' when I got the boat bug, look at me now! A rum sodden old boatbuilder. Ain't life grand?
:) :D
[sigh]
He is always making "better idiots", which in BBS terms means "nastier trolls". I don't think that moving here is really going to help in the long run (and I assume that I am not one of the problems you're trying to avoid!)

Attitude, it's all about attitude. I hope this is as nice a place to visit as the "Woodenboat" forum once was..... and I trust it will stay that way.
All,
I also got bored by those long silly and totally uninteresting discussions. Not to mention people getting personal
Not being located in America nor being American makes it also hard (impossible) to understand most of it anyway..
Have been looking around on this forum ( thanks for the tip Dave) and it looks like a nice place.
For the 'natives' of this forum:
I live in Denmark, and I am building a 27 ft John Hesp designed bermudan cutter in wood and epoxy.
Constuction started in may this year, but winter is comming here, so I have hauled all my machines and tools out of the construction hall (i.e. tent ) and moved everything to the workshop.
Hope to make the rudder this winter.

Going to the burn barrel, on break, got mighty ugly. Ain't going there no more. Some folks need to find a better hobbie and life, than sitting behind a computer all day and night. Maybe someone is allowing the cancer to kill "IT" or to wither on the vine. Thanks Dave.
As far as my daily routine, I am working on a new 17' garvey of yacht proportions, built for Mamma. We have the kids out of the house, except for a few pop-in trips, so we are fishing when weather permits,, and cathing trout, bluefish, flounder, and the old standby hogfish, for the winter freezer delights.

Oh, Doorstop, this place has its moments as well. Have a read of the thread 'Apache is back' in powerboats forum. Woodenboat never got that crazy (or did it?).
But I have learned some things even from the nasty 'Apache is back' thread. I now know not to say 'splasher' or 'poper' to fiberglass boat manufacturers - and sailbloat to sailing fans.
On a positive note, have a look at Dim's Cad work in the gallery - Wow!
MarkC, as acrimonious as the "Apache" thread may have gotten, it was at least on-topic for a boat forum. The difficulties being experienced at the other location is due to the participants wanting to bring sex, politics, and religion into the mix.
In actual fact, I think that the discussion of other boat forums is not germane to our participation on this one, so I have decided to not post here anymore on what is or was a problem with the WB Forum. So, respectfully to all, this is my last on this topic.

I generally am not a follower, but I don't want to miss any of Dave Fleming and others' knowledge on turning trees into boats. I learned a lot at the WB forum and always hope to learn more about the magic shipwrights do. Wire splicing I understand but what alchemy is needed to properly spile a plank. ;)
Looking forward to learning more on keeping my Tahiti ketch alive and well.

He presented SWIMPAL and I with invitations for one of the Media, early 1900's steam yacht, luncheon cruises for our 42nd. Wedding Anniv. We both enjoyed it very much and the Sherry, the wine, the food, the coffee, the cheesecake.

Always great to get more folks to the forum, but please bear in mind a couple of things...
This is BOATDESIGN.NET, where we are primarily into boats and their design. please post any questions regarding design, boat building education in the correct forum and keep the "what boat should I get" and other non boatdesign related posts in the open discussion forum.
Woodenboat's forum might have been a forum like any other (don't know, didn't go there much) but this one isn't. This is a place where real NA's and boatdesigners hang out and where aspiring designers take their first trembling steps into the world of boat design. So try to keep the level as high as you personally can. What I mean by that is that if boatdesign.net starts to change into a general boating forum the real designers will go away, and those of us that are learning a lot from these guys will get very sad.
Also it's a good thing to remember that even though Jeff is from the US we are many who aren't, and doesn't type fluent english so please be nice to us :)
Have a great boatdesign.net experience

Question, Erik, with no face, but imput of knowledge or comments on boats, without a P.A. or N.A. piece of paper, is restricted? That may keep it quite quiet, for a while. Thanks for the clarification in advance.

10-21-2003, 08:43 AM
I think what erik g means is that we are mainly interested about boat design, construction and handling. There are related subjects, like anchorages and legal requirements, that pertain to the site. Postings are mostly technical. The "Apache is back" posting got a bit heated. The problem, as in one other, was with some people posting very negative comments anonymously. I think that overall it has been a rare occurrence, which attests to the ethics of the members.

Anyone can ask any question about design, construction, repair etc. and I'm sure they'll get lot's of answers, just please keep it in the right forum section.
I sure as hell have no official qualifications, and I don't think I have any more right than anyone else to hang around here.
I just hope that all the new visitors will respect and keep to the style, and hopefully add, to the homey feeling we have here already.

Hi dave , what's the good new's ?? ,
Thing's at N.B.B.B. , have slowed down a bit , they are having problems finding certified plate ( the USN , being picky and all ) , so I have taken a couple of week's off and am about to hop on the big bird , heading to russia ( St.Petersburg ) in a couple of hour's . Have built about 75% of the frames with rider's , most of the tee's are in , now they are hanging some " show iron ( alum, that is ) building in mod's , two of the mod's are being hung with girder's and intercostal's .
Same old problem's , young fella's should not be allowed to have hammer's , it's better to do thing's right the first time ( with finesse ) , than have to tear thing's apart , because some one was slamming !! .
All and all , thing's go good , they hired a old fella ( five month's older than me , so I call him gramp's , one of my welder's is a year younger than me , so he is snotnose ) who is also a mech.eng. , so we have been banging out some pretty nice part's , kind of funny " snotnose " has to meat axe , all my fit's because they are " to tight " , poor baby !! .
Life in the yard's , what are you doing , ??

New to this board but, not new to the industry. Well, when it comes to knowing any one portion I have to say I am a general know enough to get into trouble, then out, then in again.
I have been in cruising boards, racing and general marine industry lurker.
I have some focus on design, building and the use of sail boats for the most part but have designed a couple of power boats. One 65' the other 15' with a 13, and 17 & 23 foot version. I built the 15 as a proto type and it worked fine. funding became a problem for production and I was in a car accident halting that project at the time.
I am a westlawn student having paid up the fees but slow on the courses as it was placed on the back burner more times than I'd care to remember.
So, I am honing my talents, concentrating my energies and developing some focus on creating more of a base to work from.
That will include continued Westlawn education, Auto Cad and math development studies.
I've purchased a couple of projects boats to toy with and to sell as additional income to fund this process. Yeah, I bought right. And have to facility to store and work on them. Oh yeah, time too!
This is a great site as for the potential to communicate with others more into the "what makes it work" than I have experienced before.
