Sorry Heinz, busy playing monopoly with the bank....
I just load "synaptic Package Manager" and installed "clamav" and leave it do its thing as any lazy bastard would - mainly for outgoing stuff - to please the windows users?
Synaptic has a search engine, just type in "firewall" and make your pick
Fcuk are you doing this on your business machine - very courageous my politician Sir... Need time to learn and tweak to your style of doing things...
most executables will only execute on user instructions - and windows files will only execute via wine - I gave the command before on this net and have forgotten it/lost track so if you find that command line let me know... wine is also available to download... nearly all files starting with "k" in the package name are for the KDE environment - the club users prefer KDE over Gnome as a gui environment as it comes with "better tools" especially for "command line freaks" and programmers - look again in synaptic but using the button at bottom left <sections>....

Over the last three years I've bought, installed, and networked over a dozen computers. All ran XP (when I bought a Vista machine, I paid a guy to remove it and install XP), all run AVG (viruses), AdAware (spyware), and use the standard Windows XP firewall. Despite downloading thousands of customer files from all over the world (I'd guess 15-20,000 files), and having half the computers constantly online, we've had one instance of a virus sneaking in. (When XP was taken off the market, I started stockpiling computers running XP Pro from eBay and uBid.)
I'm just offering this perspective in case you're unduly concerned about the Windows platform. I realize that some guys just like the challenge of Linux. The only other guy I know who used Linux was also someone I admire, a very intelligent guy, and often going nuts trying to make it work.
Ok, now I'm gonna go see if anyone posted new pics to the pics thread.

Good onya tinhorn, may bill G remember your faithfulness in his will?
Heinz, just play around - doing mindless changes - it will either decide to work, or totally fcuk up, at which point install another distro - try linux mint this time - sometimes it just requires a different geek approach to the installation process - I think cpu's have taste and may prefer the different flavour........ Suse is another, and Fedora - these both use rpm's as packaging systems, suse may come with all the codecs & plugins - not sure... Last time I used Fedora (free version of the business "RedHat" version as used by many ISP's) it maintained a policy totally against "non open source" stuff...

M... I delved into its brain and manually altered it... WPA encryption upset it for some reason.
Tinhorn... I have worked with Windows since V2.0, ugly blue thing... MSCP, MSCE + Internet etc etc qualified to the wazoo on MS stuff (well a little outta date now :D). I can make Windows bomb proof and yes I also have never had a drama, anyway.... I swear the shove time bomb "slow down" code in their updates to drive new machine/OS sales... Sick of tweaking, rebuilding etc etc Its way to resource hungry... that's just an MS mindset, they don't give a crap about elegant code with a small foot prints they just put on weight and features mindlessly. So I gunna play with Linux for a while and see what she does... self induced pain ATM but we will see how it all comes out in the end :D

Just for your entertainment as a reward for your perseverance:::::
Grandma in Traffic
Dear grandchild,
The other day I had purchased a bumper sticker that read “Honk if you love Jesus” and I was merrily tootling along enjoying the trip home after the nice man stuck the sticker on my bumper...
I was sitting in the front row, waiting for the lights to change and thinking of how nice people can be and how much I loved Jesus. All of a sudden I was startled by honking, and bless me I was feeling so happy with all the people expressing how much they loved Jesus too – must have good eyes to read my bumper sticker. How marvellous....
Then people started wishing me “Joyous times on sunny beaches” I think – it was a little difficult to understand with all the honking... and you know, that, “Hawaiian greeting of happiness”, sign you make with the second finger extended and all the others curled over, well, that was when I figured that I was really being wished a joyous time at the beach – bless their loving hearts....
Just then I suddenly realised that the traffic lights were green and I was the only one who made it through the intersection, so I could not depart without showing these loving people of my appreciation at their "beach side" wishes and honking their love of Jesus, that I stopped, and got out, and because I was a little distant, stood up and extended both arms in the “Hawaian greeting of happiness” to all, and the expressions of their love of Jesus was almost overwhelming, so I got back in to my car and sped home to tell you of my wonderful experience, and that you should by going to church and praying to Jesus more often...
God Bless You Grandchild
Grandma...
So when you get held up by a stream of traffic that is not moving, think of Grandma, She may be up front, praising the Lord again...

Heinz, I couldn't think where to put this so you may be blessed for hosting "from the children"
KIDS IN CHURCH
3-year-old Reese :
'Our Father, Who does art in heaven,
Harold is His name.
Amen.'
A little boy was overheard praying:
'Lord, if you can't make me a better boy, don't worry about it.
I'm having a real good time like I am.'
After the christening of his baby brother in church,
Jason sobbed all the way home in the back seat of the car.
His father asked him three times what was wrong.
Finally, the boy replied,
'That preacher said he wanted us brought up in a Christian home,
and I wanted to stay with you guys.'
One particular four-year-old prayed,
'And forgive us our trash baskets
as we forgive those who put trash in our baskets.'
A Sunday school teacher asked her children as they
were on the way to church service,
'And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?'
One bright little girl replied,
'Because people are sleeping.'
A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin 5, and Ryan 3.
The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake.
Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson.
'If Jesus were sitting here, He would say,
'Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.'
Kevin turned to his younger brother and said,
' Ryan , you be Jesus !'
A father was at the beach with his children
when the four-year-old son ran up to him,
grabbed his hand, and led him to the shore
where a seagull lay dead in the sand.
'Daddy, what happened to him?' the son asked.
'He died and went to Heaven,' the Dad replied.
The boy thought a moment and then said,
'Did God throw him back down?'
A wife invited some people to dinner.
At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and said,
'Would you like to say the blessing?'
'I wouldn't know what to say,' the girl replied.
'Just say what you hear Mommy say,' the wife answered.
The daughter bowed her head and said,
'Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?'
Peace, love and happiness

I see Kaspersky is the best anti virus now with around 99 % detection of malicious code. AVG is in the 85%
I tried Vista, it was terrible with all the security stuff and so slow it's not funny. Thought I'd share this link with anyone who was considering Vista for the supposed increased security.

Its evil, it will suck the life out of my processor!
I'll catch it for saying this, but I've actually come to like vista overall now (just so you don't throw me into the fire, I have four linux boxes running and only three windows boxes... so I'm still more linux than windows) I've also resolved long ago to expect every new GUI software and os version to take noticeable extra cpu power to be as fast as the previous so I'm probably an easy customer.
Meanz Beanz
05-28-2008, 03:13 AM
Yeah, with new MS OS's its just the resource hungry thing (always seems to be a quantum leap) and the extortionate price if not buying it with a new system... but then again you need the new system. The thing with Linux is getting some of the software I need running on it. Problems problems computers.... we love em :D
Knut Sand
05-28-2008, 05:24 AM
I'm too scared of Vista... I have 2 computers, both XP pro, One with Trend AW the other with eeehhh, same as Tinhorn uses, both also with adaware. No problem... Run SolidWorks design program so, I have no option, gotta use Windows, and Vista was a bit too new for me when I bought the last PC (HP laptop).
Ok, then my wife bought a laptop, vista..... Ok I admit that I was thinking, how hard can it be to; get that on the home net, install drivers for the printer etc... I managed to get it going, but It was not as straightforward as I had expected.....
I will stay away from vista, why have they: vista home, vista media, vista professional... how many versions are there????
All those "control" questions.... I'm sittin' here pushing the freakin' keyboard; of course I'm sure!!!
So...I'll stick to XP(P).
And Linux on my satelite receiver....:D

Wish to migrate to something stable, try Linux Mint... If you can burn an "iso" cd image it will self boot so you can try without installing.
After you have backed up all your data files then install in about 6 easy steps - almost a no-brainer?
Download in Australia here http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/linuxmint/5/ this one "LinuxMint-5.iso 06-Jun-2008 09:28 691M"
else look here http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_elyssa.php and here for the main edition http://www.linuxmint.com/download.php to download - it has access to "restricted drivers for video cards as well as plugins and codecs for everything nice and not inhibited by American laws & litigation....:P:P:P

Its not at the moment Mas, I'm frigging around rebuilding a database that munges stock data... one table has 5.5 million lines, apparently that's getting a little much for MS Access so I'm custom building a PHP/MySQL Web Appy thingy to munge this stuff around... hopefully alot faster :D

I know exactly what you mean, in the late 70's I wrote a prog to select lotto numbers and had got to the stage where I could guarantee the 6 numbers from my selection of 12 numbers out of 45 in the list (the original lotto system) - no way to lodge a "system 12" and not worried about getting all the permutations and no one could give me just the combinations formula in sets of 6..... so I deleted it......
Meanz Beanz
06-14-2008, 06:07 PM
**** Mas (he exclaimed)... that sounds impossible! You ought to munge stock data... maybe you will come up with some insights. All you can achieve in my experience is to skew the probability in your favour, combine that with the correct behaviour and you are on a winner. In fact its the latter that far out weighs the former. A hard nosed pro trader can make a dart board and the news paper work. My nose is still a little soft... so I need statistical support :D

Heinz, Trouble is that most of the plays on all forms of the stock-market are made by young, educated, dumb/stupid babies & I am no good with kids or "anal-arse-ing" group psychology sessions - give me raw random number analysis or stuff like that - well not so much now as half my brain has retired and the other half has too many loose connections to access the database between my ears....

Why do programmers always get Christmas and Halloween mixed up?
Because DEC 25 = OCT 31
How do you keep a programmer in the shower all day?
Give him a bottle of shampoo which says "lather, rinse, repeat."
A system programmer came home from work almost at dawn and told his wife enthusiastically: "Tonight I have installed a new release of MVS/ESA together with VM/CMS and CICS/VS".
"G.O.O.D" answered his wife.

Mint installation crap....it thinks it got it right, even displays the boot loader... thats useless though because it has not loaded the USB drivers at that point and can't see the USB keyboard.... even though its available through the rest of the boot...??? genius boys pure genius. Got another keyboard out to get past that and hey presto its knackered the XP install. I suspected this might happen when I was forced to use the "auto option" on the install because the manual option would not work, damn auto option does not even tell you what its doing.... typical crap. Trying to rescue Windows now, wife pissed off again (her machine, thanks Linux gods...)
Seems it can't deal with an multiple partition machine very well... its all good if you just want to one OS but beyond that these things ALWAYS screw up!

You must have the "wrong Ying & Yang"? works OK for me but then I don't have *******.....?
It didn't like to many partitions... with a blank disk straight install, no worries... turns out that it renumbered all the partitions and XP just got lost. Editing the boot.ini file in XP fixed that quickly enough. The boot loader still can't see the USB keyboard so I have and extra keyboard hanging out of the box just to boot. Silly stuff that most installs do.... I mean renumbering partitions on a dual boot setup and expecting other OS's to come out of it fine... and they slag XP for having an aggressive install.
Anyway seems to be running Ok, I will start loading my proprietary drivers and see if we can't do better on the wireless side and the graphics side (a bit ropey really) then I will put a database server and web server up and see how that goes (that should be great...) and try a bit of "wine-ing" after that and see what it makes of some of the apps I don't want to leave behind (not so sure about "wine"...
Cheers

There is an app called "wine door" which is supposed to help with the installation process (like the windows installer - but thank goodness "Free!ship+" does not need that - I just make a directory called "freeship" put the zipped package in there then extract and install without "wine door" and I am up and running.... hi, i find best thing to do is have 2 or more partitions on my hdd, one smallish one for the os, and on efor everything else. when u get a virus, it always (in my case's) has gone to the system partition, so i just delete that partition and reinstall it. i had avg free version which has en the best till now cos it now costs, havent had firewall for a while but not had any viruses either....i dont mind reinstallin my os when my comp fucks up cos i styill have all myt other files, and dont pay a penny. thats the best freeware in my mind, i mean how long does it take to reinstall bloodu linux...i use gentoo, personal preference but its not alot of time wasted, givs u an excuse to sit on ur arse at the computer for a while. lol. :D

yeh but u cant stop all viruses, no software will, theres always a way around it, so whats the point in spendin ur hard earned cash of fancy products that only stop the bog standard viruses, the ones stopped by fancy programmes can be romoved quite esily anyway...if u r a computer boffin, its the realli bad ones u cant stop and that do the most damage, so if u can get freeware antivirus...do so, but dont spend lopads of cash on tryin to stop the small viruses, if the big ones get through u will soon know bout it, just delete the partition and reinstall....u dnt need fancy software to do that either, whatever os u use, just insert the disk and during setup, u can delete and create nu partitions, if r reali good wif comps, u could always ceate a virtual desktop and then when u get a virus, delete it, but u have to be a real comp boffin 2 do that, i just cant be fussed tbh. i keep my computin simple, it saves time and money, all round.

Attempting connection to your computer. . .
Shields UP! is now attempting to contact the Hidden Internet Server within your PC. It is likely that no one has told you that your own personal computer may now be functioning as an Internet Server with neither your knowledge nor your permission. And that it may be serving up all or many of your personal files for reading, writing, modification and even deletion by anyone, anywhere, on the Internet!
Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE! Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.
Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.

Lesser views and a 4 year old angular monstrosity went for 4.5million so my price looks reasonable as that building could be replicated for less than 3million and give far superior views and be above sea level even if all the ice/snow melted (worst case value is 70 to 80m) and would make the property (mine) a waterfront with deep water access.... :D:D:D

My main computers are in the "hospital" both now run Ubuntu, but it is the hardware that is poorely made - everything seems to be made for the cheapest price in asia? - where is the Quality product - - - - Fcuk this corporate demand for high profit margins. - - - I want something that I can be confident will WORK when I turn it on.... This is part (the core) of the global fiscal collapse - - greedy CEO's and other brainless fuckheads wanting to maximise their current profit margins and no care for the future.... Execution is too kind of a word for these lowlife....
Apart from a few (Sean Herron? - a man who seems to care enough to produce as best as is possible) where is the desire to produce quality and reliability in a good? - - - Is the only meaning of life a fast buck?
Supermicro boards and boxes have been reliable day in and day out for me over the years... but at a price.

Hi Jeff, Thanks, do you happen to have a link and an id on the ACTUAL manufacturer? (I prefer to use AMD mobile cpu for its ability to operate in hot climates)
