I'd like to hear from any Texas Maritime alum's about the school, specifically the deck officer program and about merchant marine life in general. I won't be applying for another year but I'm trying to get my ducks in a row. It mainly appeals to me over the other academies because of its location. I'm a southern boy and detest snow and the hospital close by is nice too (my girl's a med tech). Thanks

I didn't go to A&M (went to KP instead) - good career can be made on the water. Lots of companies to choose from in the Gulf of Mexico:

These are two of the big ones in the gulf - check out the anchor handling fleets.

I love the job - I have worked on container ships, tankers, tug boats, oil skimmers. I made my way down to the Gulf and started working on Anchor boats about 10 years ago - it is the most intense boat handling you could ask for.
I think A&M is a good school - one of my best friends graduated in the early 90s. He seems to have a good education under his belt.

Good luck on your career!
