I am delighted to see that some of our members now uses their faces as avatars. This makes it easier to relate to someone when you see his mug;) Just hope it is their own...

Lets use this tread to introduce ourselves to others and may I be the first

Good to see some faces, and some gray hair too.
I'll be 48 in a couple of months and all of my gray is in my beard.:)

Pictures are just a couple of years old.

Here are a couple of photos.

The headshot portrait was taken by my son who is a professional photographer. His website is:

www.sponbergphotography.com

The second shot was taken at the White House in 1998. That's me with Hillary Clinton. My daughter, next to me with the glasses, had won a writing contest sponsored by Senator John Chaffee, and first prize was a trip to the White House and the Capitol building. My daughter is a professional freelance artists, and her website is:

I don't come out very well on pictures. I'd rather have a fish  for an avatar instead ;)

Both pics from last year. Tigerfish from Josini dam, a Rockcod from Mapalana. This is what p me really off, I have to wade in the surf in the brakers to get to the fish. I better get a move on the cat. Just thinking about it makes me feel land sick already

Fanie
06-01-2008, 10:57 AM
He-he Jim, I use lures only, braid and some stiff carbon rods for those tigers so there's no stretch and very little give unless the drag goes. When that tiger hits your lure you get a shock in your wrist that hurts... OUTCH ! it feels soooo nice :D More more... :D

That trip to Mapalana is what had me decide to build the cat... same as the previous trip, we could see the nice big fish swimming and many of them, and no way to get to them. Couple of times I was going to throw up. No hold back just let rip :D

There was this one monstrous shark that cruised just off shore, probably six meters plus... and I couldn't get to the bloody thing to get a hook into it. Man, I was irritated. I even made some kites and what do you know... the wind never even shifted from exactly parallel to the shore.

Well...
Looking at you folks, I herewith finally present to you a picture that will rise the level of looks on this forum up to the population average... The thing I'm standing on are bandyskates (like hockeyskates, less rules, round rope ball intead of puck, From my time in "Lund desperados"), supported by "ice", Much like Jesus I think. I need approx 40 mm of it, much less if i have some malt available.

How can you guys be into boating if everything is iced up all the time ? Sailing mean you slipped on the ice or what ;)

I can never live there... be like in a freezer. It's 12 deg here in the nights now, sub-arctic weather

Knut Sand
06-09-2008, 04:49 AM
Norway is generally a pretty nice place, nice nature, and a lot of it (considering the no. of people here). I have collected some parts for an "ice sailer" (Garage project, don't tell wife, too low WAF on such projects). It's not winter all the time here you know. Summer now, 16 °C in water. :)
In winter's never a problem to find ice to the whisky....( I know sivilized men don't use ice, but they're not here...)

A fellow from some part of Africa was here in the winter, brought no camera, bought several "throw away " cameras... Photographed ice, his special intrest was "pinnacles" He never had thought it possible for water to freeze on the way down from the roofs.... Makes nice photos though. Btw, he thought it generally was a bit too cold also....

Capsizing a boat in the winter is a true "wake-up" experience.... If you swim too long in that water in the wintertime, even with a wet-suit, you'll normally does the peeing sitting down the couple of next days. Take some time to get all "extremities" back in working order again....:D

See what I mean, you guys are seriously misplaced. 16 °C is like winder here and it is not nice. All these clothes you have to wear - I'm surprized some of you have kids

Innocence my ass...

masalai
06-22-2008, 08:35 PM
Huh? don't you mean kids by 9 mos after the end of each winter hibernation?:D:D:D

Fanie READ THE ENTIRE LINE : (up "to 1955" thereafter rapid degeneration to absolute - - - - - ;)) :P:P:P growing old disgracefully comes to mind but it is the motto of a bikie gang here (ULYSSES) and mallow youthatched by the original "me" pic in callow youth and such "innocence" that I even colourised black & white photos.....

This thread was a really good idea. How about keeping the chatter to another thread and leaving this one to serve a very useful function ?

If you feel the need to make inane comments you could also delete your post after a couple of days.

It would be nice if some threads were left alone here particularly threads like this which are quite useful and community oriented . IMHO

masalai

Start another one NOT in the Dungeon, That is your right and freedom (I think)

Actually it may be a good idea, "active cruisers", "Active designers", "Active builders" etc., and so on in their own specialised region....?

Where would you put something like this? There is only one venue and thats open discussion.

The open discussion section was for threads that didn't fit the boat design criteria and for chat threads. I dont think its either sensible or very considerate to chat on every thread started here if they are not intended as general chat threads. I'm not sure what the 'Dungeon' is but you can start any number of idle chat threads for sociable banter without filling someone elses thread which ultimately just destroys it. Some of the more 'inane' posts just amount to graffiti style 'tagging' . However since we are a community I know there will be other opinions too. But is it really hard to consider whether the thread is for chat or serves a more useful function to the forum as a whole?

Frosty how about a decent picture of you on here ? Then we could get this thread back onto its original track.

It was really good to see pictures of the people that have contributed their photos so far, but lets encourage more people to contribute rather than sinking it in a sea of drivel.
Please

Ok Ille see what I can find.

masalai
06-23-2008, 05:50 AM
MikeJohns, OK here is what you do, in the bar at the top of the page is a row of buttons "Boat Design Forums | Boat Design Directory | Boat Design Gallery | Boat Design Book Store | Thanks to Our Site Sponsors | Sitemap" click on the first one, then you will see a list of 10 main forums and some of the sub-forums, select your favourite one - one that equates with your interests, say, for example, Powerboats, so click on it and enter that then create a thread in there called "Powerboat Faces to Names", then post your own photo and a brief bio or whatever, inviting others to similarly post if this is their interest - - All too easy...

If a thread is not "kept alive" it becomes buried and difficult to find. I had to go back quite a bit to find and revive this only after about 40 days....:D:D

safewalrus
06-23-2008, 04:29 PM
Mike with al due respect, your not often seen down here in the dungeon -normally too serious for that! OK that's your perogative, there's plenty of forums and things upstairs where you can mix with your own kin to your hearts content! some do! some stay there, but few slide into anothers world and whinge about his world -you come into my kitchen, you sit by my fire, you drink my coffee the way I make it! Your more than welcome anytime, just please don't t4ell us how to suck eggs, down here we sucks 'em out way! In your world you sucks em your way! Jeff knows this and accepts it so why don't you!

by al means come down anytime it's great to see you, but play nice?

All the "Pitt Street" and other CBD bushtracks that connect the hi-rise paddock with the McMansion in the elete suburbs that need large 4x4 to do the commute.....? :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D The number of Victorian numberplates on BMW 4x4's is staggering, and there are a lot of toerags (the VW thingie) and do Mercedes make any? - thought I saw a 3 pointed star on one?

Reality rears its ugly head all too often, so this ugly old guy must spend time on the job: research, preparing proposals, travelling, etc, etc. Man, this compulsion to eat and sleep indoors gets expensive at times. :D :D

Had a nice quiet weekend. Noticed that, despite the hoopla, the field for the Sarasota offshore powerboat race was down more than 50% from last year. Several boats won their class "championship" by default: they showed up and crossed the start line.

Think we're hitting the point where fuel costs are modifiying behavior: lots of used SUV's for sale, megathousands in cash off and rebates for new ones, many more folks on bikes, most seem to be "not wealthy" types.

Winning back that ugly old cup seems to take unlimited funds and lawyers these days; the sailboat races becoming anticlimactic. Scroom. :D

"Lobsta boats" and "lobstaing" seem to make sense. Good boats able to handle rough water, resonable speed with reasonable fuel consumption. Yankee inginooity!

Oh, I feel like a "Major Transformation" coming on... - - - Everyone seems to be moving to greater tolerance, deeper understanding and friendship toward one another (amongst the long-time regulars on BD net - it is quite evident to me) so all I can say is "May your deity give you grace and understanding to further develop and encourage these traits"..... I am significantly moved.....

I am getting serious (into cad and research aspects necessary) to develop my boat to meet the next stage in my life, so I may be posting less vigorously (if I can ? and reduce random acts of spattering to make Safie feel threatened... :D:D:D)

Mum is now in permanent care, and being well looked after... Her needs are greater than I can deliver 24 - 7 on a consistent and reliable basis, and she seems happy and comfortable and is cared for by excellent nursing and support staff. - - - tidying up and administrative detail is still to be finalized.... I will be visiting Mum most weekends for the foreseeable future....

I am looking forward to opportunities to meet as many of you as possible on the water - cruising whilst I am able..... Thanks....

Knut Sand

Think it was Wilson Pickett that had this originally...
Btw, the song's: "Mustang Sally", it's the refrain; "Ride, Sally ride!"

The Commitments had a truly beautiful version of this....
:D really really beautiful version....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQKmrQfxRHQ

Let's take a zingloong:

Mustang Sally!
Guess you better slow your mustang down...
(oh lord...what i said now...)
Mustang Sally now baby....oh Lord...
Guess you better slow your mustang down...
(oh yeah)

You been running all over the town now...
OH!...Guess i'll have to put your flat feet on the ground....
(Ha!...what I said now...)

Listen:
All you wanna do is ride around Sally....
(Ride, Sally, Ride)
All you wanna do is ride around Sally...
(Ride, Sally, Ride)
All you wanna do is ride around Sally...
(Ride, Sally, Ride)
All you wanna do is ride around Sally...
(Ride, Sally, Ride)

Listen here....one of these lonely mornings,
OH!...gonna' be wiping your weeping eyes...(HUH!)

What i say now! Lookey here...

I bought you a brand-new mustang,
a 1965.
Now you come around, single, fine, woman...
and don't wanna let me ride...

Mustang Sally, now baby, oh lord,
Guess you better slow that mustang down....(Huh...oh Lord)
You been running all over town...OH!
Gotta put your flat feet on the ground...

What i said now...let me say it one more time.

Now all you wanna do is ride around Sally...
(Ride, Sally, Ride)
All you wanna do is ride around Sally...
(Ride, Sally, Ride)

Sorry I had to watch a bit of tv with the ol witch. Saw this movie where Mel Gibson sleeps for 50 years, then wakes up... but now age at the speed of white light, get a kid to land the plane for him and he is re-united with the love of his life :( Sucks eh. Who think up this morbid crap. The poor guy missed his once a month sex (which is about the going rate if I'm not mistaken) lemme see... 50 years x 12 months... is about 600 times... not counting leap years. And now he's finally gotten to her he's too bloody old :D I guess life can be a bitch eh  Think I'll stay awake for a while after this movie (don't want to miss out on anything... who knows :D)

no Ric, it was one I stupidly I built on spec, , dumb, nobody wants million dollar boats they all want 50 m yachts, luckily a man from Gold Coast bought her, just before I was abt to mortgage my house I then sailed her from NZ, and looked after her gratis for 6 years She is now somewhere sailing in Malaysia
the Lloyds boat was only 40 feet Nimbus is 54

yes, 17000 man hrs
i did all the metal, all the ss work, wiring, design of cockpit, , took years of my life
i commissioned Mummery in NZ for design, sea solutions in Runaway bay converted the lines to CAD for me
tankage is 1500l fuel, , 7500kg lead in scheel keel
I tried the NA market, it is hard going to break into any market

It is something you can no doubt take a lot of pride in.

My real toys are much more complex and required many more hands. They are also much uglier than Nimbus but anything you put a lot of time into takes on its own meaning.

I would love to have your welding skill. How do you go with 3mm plate?

Rick

Guest62110524
07-27-2009, 04:11 AM
3mm, fine, key is fit up
then when you have fit up, weld becomes fast, fast means less heat, less heat , less distortion
welding is just part of it
, do you have a skype thing, msn? or such
I am rather excited I may have found company China, , I teach them al al , they fit out boats, , charge out rate is 6.6 US an hour
really we have , here , priced our labour out of the equation it is not that , men, are not entitled to good wage, but that, they come to work, late, drink coffeee and spend half the day on the cell phone, that drove be bonkers when I built Nimbus
Enough here, , ciao, I am cooking

While my face is not familiar to you, some of my work may
be. Those that have followed F1 racing over the years have
seen many of my pictures. I made my way through life as
a free lance photographer. Mainly racing, a lot of F1.

Later I was a photo touch up editor for a small local magazine.

What a fabulous post BHOFM.

It just so happens that my first photo ever published was of Jackie Stewart driving for Matra/Ford in the 1968 German Grand Prix at Nurburgring. I sent in the image as a lark and Stern magazine published it. I was 19 years old and a soldier in the US Army in Germany.

Here's a shot of the great Giacomo Agostini riding his dominant, 500 cc MV Agusta from the 1969 German Grosser Preis at Hockenheim.

Thanks for reminding me of those carefree and wonderful times in my life when roaming about Europe on weekends, going from GP's to 1000 km races every chance I got.

We should probably talk at some point.

carefree and wonderful times in my life when roaming about Europe

I lived on a Gulfstar 41 for 17 years, spent most of my time
on airplanes and in airport terminals. Five marriages, failed.
One daughter I barely know.

If I had it to do over, it would be done differently. I taught
Jr High tech for the last five years of my working career. I
think if I had it to do over, I would have been a teacher.

We are getting a bit off the topic, hope there is no problem??

I have a couple pics of Jimmy Clark, will look for them.

That's the guy. Have to think about where the pics might
be. Old age thing.

When we were moving to the new house about ten years
ago, the truck with a bunch of boxes in it was stolen. The
truck was recovered the next day, but the boxes were gone.
They contained all my pics and negs from forty years
of photography. I have about .5% of the pics that were
not boxed. Also my wife was a model for several years and
all her stuff was in the boxes as well.
We found out later they had all been thrown in a dumpster
at an E-Zmart store.
The second greatest tragedy of my life.

Clark died at Hockenheim, just outside of Heidelberg, Germany while driving an F2 machine. As far as I know, something on his car just let go, he veered off the back straight at speed and ran straight into the very dense forest.

The car virtually exploded into thousands of small bits and lit the forest on fire. In those days, there were hardly any guard rails, or even safety run-outs along the track at many Euro locations. The back straight at H'heim was a mad dash at full chat with the wall of trees just a few yards away on both sides.

A great driver gone in the flick of an eye.

Speaking of eyes and drivers... Phillipe Massa is apparently up and walking after head surgery and eye socket repair due to being struck in the helmet just above his left eye by a part off another F1 car during practice for last weekend's Grand Prix of Hungary at the Hungaro-Ring.

It is now rumored that the Ferrari driver will be replaced by none other than the dusty has-been, Michael Schumacher. ;-) Schuey hasn't driven in four years, other than some Go-Kart exhibitions and such. He feels that he can get it together in fairly short order as a bit of honor to Ferrari, the marque that carried him to so many World tiles in F1.

Personally, I think he's nuts. That is one wicked world out there and all the young hotshoes will be itching to get a piece of the legend, while the old guard will have a few unfinished scores to settle from Michael's sometimes ultra-aggressive career on the track. Mike has punted more than a few other drivers right off the track in an attempt to deny them a race win or World Title. If he had been racing in NASCAR he would have long ago had his egg cracked by a well swung wrench in the pits.
