Hello, my name is Conrad and I am an engineering student developing a project for my school's robotics club. My idea is to build a smallish boat that can get itself from way point to way point using GPS and satellite communication. The ultimate goal is to sail it around the world. I would like any suggestions that experienced boat designers and craftsmen could give me.

I am currently considering a monohull with a solid wing sail. I have no idea on hull shape or keel shape, but I would like the most bulletproof design possible. If there is a way to scale down a proven hull shape, then that would be my guess on how to start. I have worked out a sail shape that will work the best for my purpose and I can scale it to any size. My only limits on the size of the craft is transportation and cost. I am thinking of something the size of an ocean kayak.

Google Robin Lovelock at Sunninghill Systems since he has operated a robotic plane steered by GPS.
A hull pointed at both ends is a good idea, a solid sail not a good idea since it will stall too easily on a reach.
Good luck with the project, Conrad.
