I'm stuck in China on a long term oilfield assignment, wishing for something productive to do on weekends. I'm looking for a reasonably priced set of kayak, canoe, rowing or dory molds to take my learning lumps on while I source the resin, glass, carbon, etc. May be interested in bigger molds early on if the price is right and they're close to Tianjin (tiny suburb of Beijing with about 10 million folks).

I am sure that you will find unused moulds in China mate. Just ask any boatyard, they all have stacks of old projects or uncompleted starters.

Send the local yards an email and see what happens.

Are you based out of Shekou? If so, about a mile north of the ferry terminal there is a set of apartment buildings called Coastal Rose. Just north of there is a boat shop with a big graveyard of molds stacked outside. They may have some little boat molds scattered in there. They wouldn't let me go look when I went there probably due to language problems, so bring along someone who speaks Chinese.....

mgpedersen, I'm located near Beijing. If I do get down to SheKou, I'll check it out. My limited experience is that the molds will magically transform from being "junk laying out back" to "valuable assets" once a westerner shows any interest in them. At least that's been my experience in Tianjin. Once I showed some interest in buying some derelict molds, the company insisted on "cooperation" where they would provide the actual boats and I would provide the customers. The problem with that arrangement is that once they had the name and confidence of the customers, my service would no longer be useful, where I'd always need a source of boats- not a very symetrical arrangement. In fairness, the company wasn't doing very well and the molds were probably mortgaged to the bank at full acquisition value or even more (it is China) and couldn't be sold. Anyway, I digress. Thanks for the info. Traveling and shipping here is cheap enough that I'd fly down to look if the odds were better. It's definitely worth a look if my real job takes me that way.
