When I went to buy my #$%tant years ago( it wasnt me that wanted it it was a friend) I was embarrassed by a young girl working at the chandlers. I walked around looking at stuff hoping a male person would come along.

No wonder my friend sent me in to buy it.

Eventually she came to me and asked if she could help , I just could'nt say the word so I bought a packet of chewing gum instead.

I dont know what a #$%tant is but with a name like that I can only imagine it is something to do with having babies.

I dont like chewing gum.

Go to E-bay and search for 'sextant'. There's about 150 of them.

I think C-Plath (sp) may have stopped making them. They were good. I had a mid-sized Heath ex- RN sextant.

Good hunting Longliner.

Try the Japanese Tamaya brand if you want precision engineering. My one has zero index error, one less thing to have to correct too!

I would still take the *@*tant to sea, who knows when the sats will be down. I was off New Caledonia once (during the Gulf War) and my 40 footer was showing 70 knots on the display, kind of fast I thought, so abandoned the rest of the messages too. Upon arrival into Noumea, the HarbourMaster informed me that we were at war with Iraq, and the satelites had been shut down for civy use.......the *@*tant was not actually used then, but it was still nice as a backup to the Furuno RDF (that I still have too, oh yeah Frosty, it does use batteries!!!!).

Just on another note, has anyone out there on planet earth actually been able to consistantly get anything better than about 5 miles using one on a yacht? I sat once in very calm waters in Fiji (Maloola Lie Lie island) and you can see the horizon from the anchorage, tried for days to do any better but to no avail. I reckon those that calaim to do 2-3 miles regularly are up themselves. However, 5 miles certainly takes you from navitating to piloting, so visuals come back into the game, and they are very hard to beat. Just wondering.......

5 miles? you did well there, I can do about 50, which is not much good trying to get into harbour but adrift in the Atlantic in a dinghy!!

By the way did you know that the Azimuth in Hong Kong is about 20 minutes passed 12 noon. I know I know, --the "about" bit is not good enough.

For those interested, there are other tables beside 229 and 249.
Martelles tables are a very simple book, sure it is not as accurate as the air or sea tables, but , hey, they are a snack to use, and as state before, you are not going to do better than about 5 miles anyhow, these tables are sure better than that. have a gander if you do not have a copy.
