Hope it's not a lost call - but the Japanese are preparing to slaughter 1,000 Minkie whales and up to 50 Hump-Back whales this season in the name of sushi (sorry - I meant science).
In my youth I experienced a year aboard a whaling ship. Trust me - it's obscene. Even by today's standards the whale takes on average six hours to die (and then of suffocation as its lungs collapse whilst being dragged aboard the factory ship. If not dead on arrival - it is flenzed whilst still breathing ie - living flesh ripped from its frame).
Can I urge all moral thinking members to boycott Japanese products until they give up this grossly unscientific venture, performed simply for the sake of profit.
Diplomacy has failed. So I am lobbying my own Government (Australia) to forget their cozy 'trade relationship' with this pariah nation - and send the Navy to sink the little yellow bastards.

I was a commercial fisherman ,,(displaced),,,,no animal should suffer a slow and painfull death,,,,I wasted no by catch,it was used for bait,,,all fish were imediatly gutted and packed on ice,,,,with bush in office the enviornment is on the back burner and the japanese are taking full advantage of this with this act,,while we are focusing on a war( right or wrong),,but in all fairness ,,you must read the (dolphin slaughter) thread again,,,I will state that I am against it,,,longliner

Customs ship to shadow Japanese whalers
The Federal Government has announced it will send ships and aircraft to monitor the Japanese whaling fleet in the Southern Ocean, a decision which could lead to an international court challenge.
Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith says Australia is formally protesting to Japan about its whaling, which he says is whale slaughter, not scientific activity.
He says he has already made representations to the Japanese Government.
"The Australian Government will take all diplomatic measures to seek to persuade the Japanese Government to stop the whale slaughter," he said. Mr Smith says the customs ship Ocean Viking, an icebreaker, will shadow the fleet.
However Mr Smith says the vessel will not use force. "It'll be surveillance, not enforcement or interdiction or intervention," he said. "For the purposes of that surveillance, the customs boarding party will not be armed, and the Ocean Viking will not be armed.

"This is a surveillance activity ... for the purpose of assessing the merits of taking an international legal case against the whaling." Mr Smith said instead of force, the Government would try to use diplomacy. "We've also commenced ... a formal diplomatic protest, which is Australia leading a formal diplomatic protest with other nations, to the Japanese Government in Tokyo, and that will be effected over the next few days," he said.

"We will appoint a diplomatic envoy to seek to persuade the Japanese Government of the correctness and the rightness of our cause. We will up our activity in the International Whaling Commission, to seek to use our voice in the International Whaling Commission to bring an end to the so-called scientific whaling."

He said the Government is also considering pursuing international legal action. Mr Smith said the Attorney-General has commissioned Commonwealth Government and independent legal advice to see what options Australia can take against the whaling. He said the Government may take action before the International Court of Justice and the Tribunal for Law of the Sea, using the Whaling Convention and the Endangered Species Convention.

He said the Government expects to receive its legal advice early next year.
The Opposition had previously warned the Government not to send the Navy.

This year Japan plans to kill 935 minke whales, 50 fin whales and 50 humpback whales.

you would be sprised at just how many whales there are, always see em when out sailing, from big Humps to wee wales The aussies shud clean up their own backyard, dozens of calves and sometimes adults are drowned in shark nets here, just to (maybe save) one lousy human

I think we need to re read the thread starter post. These mamals are slaughtered in a cruel way. We eat meat --I have no problem with that but.

We have 2 Japs in the marina. One catches fish all day and leaves them on the dock to die. There they lie and rot.

The other one washes his clothes in the shower depleting all the hot water, and can not flush the toilet after use. He also exposes himself as if it was a nudist colony , he has been told but he says he does'nt understand. I might just do something about that today. Dirty horrible bastards.
