I have a 1977 Chris w/2 350ci inboards with Carter AVS 4bbl carbs. One of the engines is hard to start and when it warms up, it stalls when near idle. It won;t start until cool. Makes for interesting docking.
It's getting gas into the carb.

If it was a Yamaha I could tell you outright it's the electronic ignition playing up. The Yamaha I had to crank untill hot before it starts. If you let it cool down you have to heat it up again. So if you're towing the boat somewhere you have to stop every 5km and run the motor in a bucket to keep temperature up.
Makes for interesting fishing. Makes for interesting getting anywhere.
Check that you have spark. Spark + gas = running motor.
On an older engine such as this I would guess it is vapor lock, since it is happening once the engine gets warm, and then works again once the engine is cool. Generally a rebuild of the carb will solve this problem.

fanie is on the right path i would guess
check the coil as it heats up resistance is increased and no spark
points and condensor i'd check out to
if the carb is passing fuel after the engine quits it's most likely not fuel related

Thanks... one sincere mechanic told me it was because of "tuliping" of the valves and to check the compression. I think I'll start with a tune-up and if necessary, a carb rebuild. May as well do the compression while I'm at it. Cheaper than a new engine.
Car engines are cooled by the air passing through the radiator and around the engine. Most boat engines are stuck in a soundproofed box to reduce noise. Might want to add some ventilation to the engine box.
