I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Wind" (1992) yet. It's all about building a boat for the America's Cup. Cheesy story line, but lots of great sailing shots.

Not sure about Heinz. It's got Matthew Modine and Jennifer Grey in the lead roles.

Theres a boat in the movie 'Titanic'!!...

Nah...that's your Great Uncle 'Iceberg'........:)

'The Onedine Line' was produced by the BBC for UK TV. Great series...but not much of a 'star' role for the 'Charlotte Rhodes' (The boat featured in the opening scenes, and credits). She was up in Inverness (Caledonian Basin) for quite some time during the filming...but as far as I know she is no longer afloat.

And of course the 'only' version of 'Treasure Island' worth viewing stars the late Robert Newton as Long John Silver. He gave the world the definitive: "Harrr - Jim lad....." Copied the world over - especially during the ridiculous 'Talk Like a Pirate' day.... :)

I believe it was called: 'Wake of the Red Witch' - and the ship 'Sea Witch' gave a much more convincing performance than Wayne....

I still rate 'Riddle of the Sands' - (1979) starring Michael York and Jenny Agguter as one of the best sailing films ever - some classic yachts...and a basic course in navigation... :)

A friend just leant me "Captain Courageous" Rudyard Kipling tale of the reformation of a spoilt brat. Brat falls off a liner is picked up by a Cod Dory taken to the mother schooner works for his keep. Some good footage and a reasonable yarn and you even get to see/hear a hurdy gurdy.

Not a movie but you can buy the DVD of the series - Onedin Line. Some nice footage of sailing vessels.

You may not like Kevin but the real hero in Waterworld was his catamaran - pity it died in the end. I would love a boat that would actually do what it seems to do.

What about Quincy, didn't he live on a sailboat?

In the late seventies;

"Voyage of the Yes", featured a Columbia 26 that was sailed to Hawaii from L.A. by two teens.

The Dove, true story of Robin Graham who sailed around the world aboard, I believe a Lapworth 24. Then completed the circumnavigation on a 30 footer.

Voyage of the Yes was the movie that got me into sailing. Both of these films are all about the adventure. Not just a few shots of the boats.

Laurel and Hardy had a boat once and they were doing it up in a boat yard. They were going to go and catch fish.

I wish I had that one. The movie not the boat!!

found " the wake of the red witch" at a salvation army store and bought it for a dollar and a half...should have saved the change! the movie was horrible! and the sailing footage consisted of the same 15 seconds ( of a beautiful square rigger) played 6 times during the course of the movie.

How about the "Pirates of the Carabean" serries? The first one has the best sailing sequences.

Also, another Costner creation; "Water world". It has the politically correct theology that all those that use wind or sun are "good" the all those that burn fuel are "evil". The floating city always makes me chuckle, all the kind and gentle people using kayaks and wind generator live in a peaceful little island of equality, and then the evil "smokers" (fuel burners) attack them to steal their food, make them slaves, and destroying their little haven.

Even so, there are some good sailing sequences in there. In fact I think in many of Costner films he has worked sailboats into most of his movies, I guess he has a thing for sailboats.

And what about the oldies like Ben Hur, Jason and the Argonauts, The Golden fleece, and many more. The 13th warrior has a sailing sequence in it, so does The 300.

Aye, Waterworld had some good sailing in it and that trimaran was a fast boat. Although I don't like Kevin Costner as an actor he did well in that movie.

Pirates of the Caribbean I have seen a dozen times and have all 3 movies on DVD. The 4th will be out soon I hear.

If you can find a copy of a movie called "The Voyage of the Yes", get it and watch it. It's with Desi Arnaz Jr. and Michael Evans who are friends and decide to sail around the world together. It's an old movie.

That movie got me interested in sailing actually, but I have been out of it for many years now.

I always wondered what brand boat that was in "Caddyshack" when Rodney got his anchor scratched by Judge Smail's dinghy. It might be a Striker...obviously aluminum:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGD-tUsySPs

While I was looking for that Caddyshack clip I tripped over this. I think most people laugh vigorously at this...but as a boater it makes me cringe!
