Hi Alik,
Like the boat. The Russian is taking me some time though.
Some of the nicest lines I have seen in a long time, for a plywood boat.
I would like to know where to get the offsets for the hull panels, I'd like to build a model.
The coachroof is very nice as well, it is a hard part to get right in ply. The other boats on the site are interesting, especially the 8 meter cruiser.
Thanks!
We also did the model 1:10 scale, so I'll look for hull panels.

Very impressive and complete CAD. Do you have a render of the cabin from the bow looking back? Especally the access to the double berth under the cockpit?
MH
We don't have this render. The access to aft berth is seen at frame F. The seat (3) is removable.
Loft drawing in vector format will soon be available for free download at the same website.
Please, report about boats in construction, ask questions if any.

Lovely boat, Alik. Could I just ask if it could be drawn a little longer at the bow, with the two sides meeting at a point? It would just drop the drag a little while going through waves. Looks very nice though, other than that (and that may just be me).
Thanks for telling us,
Tim B.
Thaks, Tim. It could be, of course and some builders of her make this modification to the original design. The reason we drew rounded pram bow is the limit of length. The boat is thought to be stored in standard 6m garage.
Tim B
07-31-2003, 07:33 PM
I did wonder if that could be the reason. I like the boat. If I had any more money I'd be tempted to build one myself.
Cheers,
Tim B.
That is significant economy for off-season storage.
For those going to build this boat - ask on details and specification in English.

Hi Alik,
Do you have a bill of materials for the boat, rigging details included?
Have any of these boats been built yet?
If so, how is the performance?
Thanks,
Hi,
We don't have bill of materials, but I can ask the builders. Several boats are in construction, none of them is already reported to be on water.

alik, did you really use 50 kg of epoxy?
ErikG
08-14-2003, 04:07 AM
50 kg's of Epoxi and 150 m2 of reinforcment? Sound awfully high for a plywoo boat to me.
Plywood we have is not specially intended for boatbuilding, more proection needeed... That is real to our expireince.

Uao nice design, I will send it to our discussion group, see cantierino.it - to discuss about it and to find somebody who intend to produce it more than me, but the important thing is to have specifications and dettails in english, because for us it is not easy to read russian. JAJAJAJA

Nice boat Alik.
I understand about why you want the pram bow for storage but I wonder if a removable bow fairing couldn't be made to attach for a finer entry? The nose could be attached with some bolts or some other method and would not otherwise be structural. I figure it would be roughly .5 meters long or so and would easily store in the cockpit for transport.
And thank you for sharing the design. I'm planning on giving it a lot of study this winter.
The idea: one can shape FRP bow block to obtain finer entry. But need to include some structural element inside this extended block...

Alik -
The link to the Babelfish translation posted by Guest worked well. Here it is again:
http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.stugna.kiev.ua%2Findex.php%3Fpirs%3Dsamostroy%26st%3Dpiligrim590&lp=ru_en&tt=url
I was able to enter the "Airshed" and get pretty good english translations and all the images for the Pilgrim 590, the Krayla 630, and some other projects. Probably enough info in English to build either boat.
The Krayla 630 is one hot little boat. I understand the swept forward board from a hydrodynamic standpoint and to let the foil exit in the cockpit. But what about it being a kelpcatcher and increasing its risk as a "hook" if you were to hit a deadhead?
Thanks Chris,
as to me, this keel is not more kelpcatching than straight bulbkeel (with zero sweep) :) The same about deadhead.

Hello Alik
As many people in this forum I find the lines of the pilgrim 590 very nice. Since I also have problems with russian I would be grateful if you could send me the english version (as well as the panels developpments) at the following
Email:

As a first go in boat building I would rather go for a smaller boat like the

Are the plans available for this model?
Thank you on advance

Hello Alik,
Greatings from Brazil.
In a "boat-building-newsgroup" here in Brazil, people were talking about your projects, but since most of them can only speak portuguese or english, they are not able to read the projects plans.
I would like to know if you have the plans in english, and also where can we get a list of the projects, how many projects are free, or how much they cost? Where can we see pictures of the boats...
I personally loved the piligrin590 a lot.. It 's a beatifull boat. Congratulations.
Can you give me directions about where to find the information above?

OK, e-mailed...
Any reports on construction? Photos?
We think of making website for 'P590' and other our 'freeware' designs builders.
Thanks.
I've created a template for the site located at http://www.internetworkconsulting.net/pilgrim590/template.html. Please let me know what you think of it. I'm not a huge sailor but am interested in building the craft myself. I'm going to continue working on the first few pages and translate the design article to English from the Babble Fish translation.
I don't know if you are familure with the Linux and FreeBSD open source model where other can contribute to designs and implementations. If so, I was wondering if you would be open to this idea. This could give the sailboat a life unknown. I would prefer to do FreeBSD style where others can make suggestions, and a team of qualified architects and designers would decide what is valid and includable.
In the short term my goals are to create a site that will allow the distribution of the Russian, English, and any other translations of the plans. I also want to include a list of members. The members would include those who have contributed though building the boat, the site, and it's design. The projects page will include links to work in progresses, models, and completed boats, and boats in use.
Please let me know what you think since this is ultimately your baby, Alik. I'm going to copy this message to the boatdesign.net thread Alik created.
Sincerely,
Shawn Zernik

Just wondering about the boats construction. Whe the hull is initially built, it is done upside down to work on the bottom first? How is a boat like this normally flipped? Do you just get like 5 people and hand flip it?

I have gone to Alik's original page and made my request there ...Several times and have not received a response. I also emailed him at the address he posted and it came back as undeliverable. I have no idea how to reach him or how to get the plans. If anyone was successful could they please post how they accomplished it on this thread so that we also may get the plans?

Alik ,
do you have some glide of boat of the microclass?
Do you have the grp plan single skin with resin of polyester of the 630?
Here in Brazil it is not so easy to find materials for sandwich, as well as epoxy.
I think a lot about doing a long adventure in a very small boat for every Brazilian coast, up to now the boat that more it interested was me that of the picture, but I preferred a monohull, a 550 with bulb kell, something as a smaller minitransat.

Seriosly, all of you that post things like, Hi Alik, could you email me the drawings, Are you unable to read? Read the whole thread and you´ll soon see that the drawings are downloadable on more than one site by now. Use those sites instead of harassing Alik:) He´s already done alot of work design the great boat for free..
By the way, I really like your designs Alik, could imagine to build some of them, but I promise to not hassle you for the plans;) Really nice of you to give away that much work for free!
But I must say that the Alien 1350 is the most interesting for me. How much would a complete set of drawings cost?
Have a nice evening everyone:)

Thanks Thor:)
Fast du förstår väl svenska gissar jag?:) But since this is an english forum, I´ll keep it in english.
Yeah, Alik really got some nice designs, I like that modern sporty design. Suppose you do to Thor? Bit OT, but do you, or anyone else know how the new Backman 31 and 41 are coming along?
Alik, the Alien 1350, its planned to have a canting keel?
Keep up the good work Alik!

Hi
Just seen the Pilgrim 590, love the design, downloaded plans at http://www.boatdesign.net/nyd/P590/
As this would be the first boat I build, if I build it, I lack a bit in expertise.
Has anyone documented the the procedure so that a newbie could follow it?
Be grateful for any info that would guide construction.

People say Boat Plans are only worth what you pay for them, but I'm new to this, so what do I know.
I'd like to build a boat, but if I can't build it cheap, I can't build it at all.
Has anyone looked at, or better still, has anyone built, one of Radoslaw Werszko's designs?
I ask this because this dayboat of his is almost exactly what I am looking for (or what I think I'm looking for :o) ).
http://dinghy.pl/40m_dayboat.htm
I have a couple of questions for the forum though ...
- Design uses ply frames and I'm told this is not a good idea??
- I'd like slightly bigger capacity and Radoslaw says I could increase it by 10%, is that a good idea?
Love to hear anyones thoughts on this design.

The 4 meter dayboat looks good, to me.
For my waters I would add flotation, maybe by closed compartments under the side benches?
I think you can scale it 10%, or more lengthwise, for example 10% wider and 20% longer.
PsiPhi

Raggi_Thor
Thanks for that.
Floatation compartments, would they be hollow and watertight, or filled with some sort of foam?
Also, I read somewhere that Phil Bolger recommended that you could scale a boat up to 10% lengthwise, but not widthwise?
Your suggestion is I could scale it differently in each dimension. Is that architectural reasoning, a recommended maximum, or just because the design is suitable?
Thanks again
Simon

It's just common sense, as Bolger would have said :)
You can scale a boat up to 10% without any changes in shape.
That means more than 30% more displacement (volume, 1.1 ^3).
If you look at boats you notice that small boats has a length/beam of 2 or 2.5 while longer boats have relatively narrower beam.
So, based on reading and looking at boats I would estmate you can changes the length with 10% and keep the rest unchanged. If you stretch it more, you may want a larger sail area also, then it's wise to increase the beam also, and the you go, changing everything...
I noticed this polish site had a longer boat also.
A completely different boat that I like is this one,

..Floatation compartments, would they be hollow and watertight, or filled with some sort of foam?..
Hollow and watertight, and with plastic hatches so you can store fishing gear etc there,
or just airbags under the seat in the existing design.
or some styrofoam under the benches.
It depends on the waters you sail in.
If you get caught in bad weather and have to bail a boat out after a capsize it's better to float high, if you can paddle to a friendly shore it isn't that important..

Thanks again, "common sense" from a Naval Architect is valuable resource to someone like me.
I asked Radoslaw about putting the dayboat cockpit configuration and rig in the larger hull, he replied . . .
both boats 4.0m and 4.5m have definitely opposite characters. The 4.0m dayboat is suitable for leisure boating. She is easy to sail, and very quick to launch and rig. It is also possible to use oars or an outboard motor. The 4.5m dinghy is different. She is faster, more exciting to sail, more efficient upwind, but her rig is far more complicated. Each of both hull shapes is neatly fitted to its rig and arrangement. I am not sure, if it is a good idea to mix them, and replace the 4.0m hull with the 4.5m one. I'd rather recommend to rescale the dayboat 10% up (to 4.4 m in length), and eventually replace the daggerboard with a centreboard situated at the same place and similar to this one of the 4.5m dinghy.
I might have to put the design into a software program and work out what size (displacement) boat I really need [4 adults, dog & picnic].
I found that Argie 15 just a couple of days ago. I have two designs on my want list if I were to buy plans - the Argie 15 and the Glen-L 15, though the Glen-L is not flat bottomed and I want a shallow draft for the Pummistone Passage (GoogleEarth Bribie Island - Pummicstone is the streach of water that makes Bribie an island). I'm also suggested a Lug sail would be better for a beginer to handle.

Calm waters - rivers, lakes, estuarys, and no more than 50 yards from the shore, for now . . .
People say Boat Plans are only worth what you pay for them...
Yes. Try to BUY plans of 26' boat from ***** for one hundred bucks. No problem that lines plan enclosed is for 22-footer... You will be given a coefficient, so You can scale it up multiply by 1.152, on Imperial system - spend wonderfull time :)
I say plans are good if You pay good money for them. In our case with Pilgrim 590 it is a kind of donation.

Hi Alik!
Great designs, and for free.. that is just amazing :)
Im planning to build myself a sailboat however im looking for something bigger with more space. I have been looking at your design: Grace 1420 and i just love it. To me it looks like the perfect boat and i would love some more info on it. Especially what i would have to do to get my hands on those drawings and how much it would set me back.
You can contact me by email to peter_yz125@msn.com
Thats probably where ill see it first and i would love to hear from you.

I have downloaded the plans from the site, and looking forward to start the project. many things have to be explained, but the plans are a very good starting point. They seem OK for an amateur builder.
If anyone has started building, please contribute to the forum. Photos will be most useful.
Any idea about the material list and the expected cost of the "kavalier"?
K800 sailing... but this boat is a bit overweight due to thicker plywood used. Also I think that they just borrowed sails from another boat.

Well, marine grade ply is the best you can use. Anything else may cause serious problems, especially when you will have to push the boat to its limits.
If I was you, provided that you mentioned ocean sailing I wouldn't compromise with anything less than marine grade ply. This will keep high the selling value of your boat as well.
My advice: don't get into a HUUUGE project like the k-800, unless you are sure you can find the proper meterials.
Sorry, ALik, for bypassing you...

I noticed that only 8mm ply is used for the bulkheads and the chines as well. Is that right? Seems rather thin to me for the bulkheads. Is there any other alternative thickness (eg 10mm) than one might use without adding extreme weight to the yacht?

The "kavalier" project has just started. The first step is the 1:10 scale balsa-wood model, that will help me understand the geometry of the plans and maybe any problems as well.
Pictures will follow soon enough.
There are however certain problems and I need some answers.
1) I don't have any idea about the keel weight, material, and construction, neither about how it is fitted to the hull. PLEEEEASE HELP!
2) Is it OK, if I use ply instead of pine for the bulkheads? What should be the thickness of the ply?

So I`ll be the 1001st to ask the most stupid questions in this thread over and over again?
"Hi Alik, can you please send me all the boat plans you`ve ever drawn because I want to build myself one! ... and can you include detailed pricings because I need to figure out why I truly can`t afford one! ... and can you send me nice coloured pictures because I rather like to daydream than actually do something! .... and could you send me a detailed building instructions in Suaheli because I`m too stupid and/or lazy to figure out something by myself! ....and can you be my personal boat designer during the next couple of years for free? ... or can you build the boat for me? .... and can you wipe my stupid a.. every now and then?"
When I read through all the posts and stupid questions in this thread I doubt that there`s even one person in here who`s really ever done something other than just posting some bull... in boat building forums!
I can`t read one single word in russian but it`s not necessary to understand the plans anyway. If you`re not even able to figure out how to build this simple plywood shoebox you better should stay away from boatbuilding entirely- save your money and buy a boat from your local dealer. Hopefully you`re better captains than craftsmen....

I had a look at the plans for the Pilgrim, it's still high on my lists of which boat I would like to build.
Knowing very little about boats or boatbuilding, in fact as a totally and utter newbie, is it rude to point out a little deficiency in the plans?
Unless I am missing something, there's no instructions on how to use them.
For an experienced boat biulder this may not be a problem, but as the plans are aimed at novice home builders don't you think a lot more would get built if there were some instructions?
OK - Please - Don't Flame Me - I'm not asking Alik to come and build it for me :D Read the rest of this post before reacting.
Unlike most people, I have read this entire thread, end-to-end, I even managed to find and download the plans all by myself - in English!!
It is a wonderful and generous thing that we have been given these plans for free - we should return that favour to the designer.
Everyone who has built one of these boats, or who has good boat building experience, or who can understand the plans as they are, should contribute to a set of guidelines for the really amateur (like me) builder. Like an Open Source software project - for those who are familiar with the concept - many people contribute their time and effort (just because they can) and everyone benefits.
As I fit none of the catagories above I would be happy to contribute instead the effort of collating the experience and knowlege of others into a document that could be used as instructions to build one of these boats. I even have a Russian friend who might translate the results back into Russian if I ask him - might cost me a bottle of Vodka, but hey...
Instead of asking for more lets give a little back.
Anyone interested?

Hi ,
I am monitoring this topis and general idea of K800 for couple of years.
And, I belive there are few general problems:
- there is no more then one-and only russian/ukarine blue-hull K800 put on watter 9till the date
- sooo many people are attracted with word FREE, that is almaost painful (daj Prosinečki ne brukaj više svoju pomorsku naciju!). Theey think K800 is long, light, have some acomodation and thet is yacht, alows me to sail over ocean or catch the babe! Guys, just look at sail area, BWL and weight, and you will figured our that K800 is serius racer, not for first-timers.
- peoiple want plans on different lenguagues. Why everything must be in english? Use some web-translator, at least. And, finnaly all mesurments are in milimeters. Quite enough for technical reading people.
- I did not fgo throug all 18 pages of post, but this boat CAN NOT be build form just few sheets of paper, except you have some experience. if not, go to nerest bookstore (or web) and find some popular book about amateur boatbuilding in plywood.
-at last , it is obvious that more enthusiastic builders have problem: keel and rudder; realy Alik, you miss to add rudder shape , and kell and keel box material.I am almost sure that keel and keel box should be from stell or even lead (did not make volume-to- weight calculations, but for that sail plan...)
- and, if anyone from you go deeper in web, you can find that K800 is some amateur-build version of Alik's Pluto 800. And there, position and construction of keel is so obvious.
- and, I am with Alik 100% : for free it is too much to expect all details to be covered. Sercing over the webb wil help you to find many varios solution for keel retracting, rudder hardware etc.
- Personaly, I am more concerned in one: how she sails?

A lot of wrong statements.
There are more than ten boats built and launched to K800 design. Keel box material is specified - it is a pack of steel plates joined together. Some boats are built with bulbkeel - drawings also available.
Level of details of drawings is enough for amateur builder with experience, but not enough for 'dummy builder'. These designs are not intended for people with zero experience.
As with many amateur-built boats, the quality is not to top level, but some boats look really nice and built to high standard. They also sail well, though some 'family boats' use shortened mast.
People who really build the boats are getting the support, those who only dream and ask thousands of questions - no, sorry... So, continue Your monitoring :)

Wow, this was fast!
I thought that no one reads K800 Posts!
Despite your first sentence oposing to me, I am more than satisfied with answers!
first of all; one big AHA!
So, there are lot of boats build world wide!
Where are pictures! All fathers like to show pictures of own childs. Boatbuilders even more! Last evening, before send my post, I pass all 17 pages of this post looking for pictures ( one picture speaks more than 1000 words) .
But without result.
Did somone have idea to make some web-ring?
i.e Didi 26 builders have it, with lot of pictures, and links.
In other items, I think we speking same lenguague.
Sorry, I did not find any description of keel and keel box on original web-site.
To be sure, I just downloaded plans from site, again. I have also all availble documents: magazine article , blue-boat building pictures, even all available material about Pluto 800,
By the way, I did not see your comment about K800 and Pluto 800 simmilarity.
Are they "relatives" ?
And , finaly, I(we) will be happy to have some links to other K800 builders.
And, about building: it is not problem wheather I will monitor or build. But, prior to start anything, I (and many other potential builders) need to have at least, some reference.
Belive me it is not question of price-for-plans. All serious builders knows that price of plans is neglectable comparing to all other costs. But, I, and many other visitors of this site simply likes lines of K800. more than some other (available) plans.
I have feeling that you "marked" me as some web-site builder, not real one .
Maybe, but I do not know why I than make comaprison table between K800 and other competitors (based on available data), why I try to make lines for round bilge version (for strip planking i.e) etc, etc.
Again, I have feeling that there are so many people, just need some proof , to start building.
Like pictures, speed reference....
Your turn..
If You have Russian version from magazine, You should be able to read this:
Киль
Плавник киля изготавливается сварной конструкции – набирается из вертикальных пластин, либо литым. Общий вес плавника (без шверта) должен составить 300 кг. При необходимости, в корпус можно уложить дополнительный внутренний балласт.
Drawing of keel is available also.
For web-ring - K800 is not commercial project as Didi26, and I do not really have resources to coordinate K800 builders.
K800 and Pluto800 - the last one is purely racing boat, 2 units built. The red boat which one You can see on photos is active racer. There is nothing common in these two designs excerpt they are both 8m class.
