Hi.I just recieved a free 1948 Lobster boat.Im curious about the long term life span of her because she has had HUGE modifications done to her hull. She use to have a beam of 11 feet and the previous owner attached thin wood strips to her hull building it out and re-planked her making her about 14 feet wide. So its basically a 42X11 foot boat sitting inside a 42 x 14 foot boat. She also has about 3/4 inch of Epoxy coating her outter hull. The hull looks great and seems to be in good shape. The cabin is what needs the work and Im wondering if the old boat is worth fixing givin the massive hull modifications? Anyone ever hear of a boat having this done to the hull before and if so,how well did it hold up? The hull mod. on this one was done approx 6 years ago.
Thanks
36" of additional girth seems out of hand, are you sure you're not looking at the ceiling and thinking it's the inside of the hull? In this vain, I've never seen a craft of that general size with 18" molded frames! 3/4" of an inch also seems excessive and it's likely not epoxy, but polyester.
Do yourself a big favor and have a surveyor or skilled boat carpenter look her well over. I've repeatedly found nothing is free and if the work was done just 6 years back, it must not have been enough to keep the boat.

Yeah it no doubt seems out of hand. The fellow said he did this so he would have more walk space around the side.--Ive been working on boats off and on for about 11 years and never knew something like this could even be done. Its a pretty neat looking old boat and Id like to fix up the cabin, but the hull issue just kinda has me worried about the long term life span.
I think Ill take your advice and have someone look her over who knows alot more than me.
Thanks again
