I will live here in 21 days if I can not get a new job here in Taiwan and is the place I used to live from the day I was born.
I shure miss the countyside and being able to just padle around among the islands in a boat. I hate Taipei, bloody cars everywhere.
If I'm staying I'm building a howercraft to use on the river

Can’t help thinking that this will be a MAJOR thread - much like my fellow countryman’s (Wynand N’s) thread “where is this” (http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/showthread.php?t=17014) So I thought I’d better get my 2 new-pence/cents worth in early.
So I’m here in thumbnail 1. Yes Bergalia, that’s me (just NE of Romford) giving the thumbs up sign with a can of Belguim’s finest ale in the other. :p
But I really want to be back home (Thumbnails 2 & 3) ‘cause where I am looks like this (Thumbnail 4)
Don’t have a pic of my current dwelling but it’s much like Bergy’s one – only with central heating and double glazing.

The area is not much to look at from above. Mainly rural with no large bodies of water close. A few rivers & many streams though.

well mate me like you, I defend myself, in this case was 2am, this car pulls alongside, no one else fer miles, he plays his stereo real loud, then goes away and stops not 2 feet from my door, so I grabs my knife(kitchen long, sharp big) and throw open the door(in my jocks) and leap down at his car, he went white as a sheet, now the thing is, I did not know if there were 3 of em or one of em, but I was,nt going to lay there til was too late. I have a big stick too, in Italy same thing, but I had forgot to lock door, it opened!! and a hand reached in, , I grabbed stick and leapt up , four teenagers, I bet they beat every 100m sprint record going. yepp I,m peaceful, to a point:)) trouble since those mosquitos bit me, I can no longer run, so chances of catching anyone are slender, however, the woman don;t run , so all's ok:))

Ah, Stu, so you've experienced the wonders of the infamous I-4, and the world's (so they claim) largest motorhome dealer. Fortunately, most of Florida lies outside Orlando and Kissimmee, and (so far, at least  ) most of it is unpaved. I've experienced the wonders of sharing space with an alligator in the wild, eye contact with a dolphin within 1 mtr of my kayak, ... and the sight of wondrous young females adorning our beaches and the sidewalks of the banking district of downtown Miami. :D :D

A good Brit accent and some manners .... in contrast to the overly muscled ignorant louts they seem to hang with typically ... might not take any at all ... on the other hand, if a gin tonic or two is what's worked in the past, why change a good thing? :)

For once a sensible answer to the question...At the moment (11.20 - 8/6/07) I am passing through the town of Nowra on the NSW south coast - heading north on the Princes Highway. We - the missus, two girls and I are on our annual trip to Sydney to visit the in-laws (mine). I'm tapping away at my daughter's laptop - girls in the back deafened by ipods - and the wife snarling at fellow drivers. Will be off 'air' for a couple of days whilst I play the 'ideal son-in-law, brother-in-law, and kindly uncle....'

That's a good idea; scary how many people have no clue about navigation, rely totally on electronics to tell them where they are. The military still requires officers to be able to navigate manually, but if systems ever went down, there'd be an awful lot of people lost and crashing into solid objects!

The first is the mariner's astrolabe, the precursor of the sextant. Measures angle of stars above the horizon. Made navigation "somewhat" more accurate (Stu, how do you tell if that thing is right side up?).
The second looks to be a chip log, for measuring speed in knots (literally). This was a Renaissance era high tech device which reduced the cost of shipping by eliminating the position of "log tosser" aboard ships. Log tossers, very large fellows, akin to Scots caber tossers, were once required to carry logs from the hold and toss them overboard so the mate could determine the ship's speed. They were, like caber tossers, very large fellows whose muscular development was in inverse proportion to their intellect. They were lazy as well, and not good for much except reducing the supply of fresh meat. The 16th century discovery that a small wooden plank, or "chip" gave speed calculations as accurate as those of the log gave rise to much celebration among seamen. :P :P
