Daddy Bush used to keep a cigarrette boat for bass fishing down in Kennebunkport, Maine. Probably that boat. A little overdone for catching a fish, but what's gas to a Bush?
Bush bash away, it does this heart good to know that even though I don't know a lot about foreign polititions, I do not wish to be called an American alongside a criminal and general miscreant. We're not all like him, and it's plain the election results were tampered with. Gore won, and if not for the crooked exemptions of black voters in Florida back in 2000 courtesy of brother Jeb Bush, the vote would have swung to Gore. They were "accidentally" put on a list of felons and their votes were never counted.
Most Americans desperately wish Bush gone, but I'm afraid that short of marching on the White House by the millions, it won't be happening.
The system has failed to protect the constitution.

Alan --your post is indeed sobering.

The Mighty USA (As we are constantly told) cant have a democratic election? and even then do some thing about the undeserved candidate who bullied his way in through coruption.

A country who constantly points its finger at others yet is unable to see eye to eye in polution responsability.

A country who marches confidently through others demanding they change their ways to democracy arrogantly convinced that democracy is without doubt perfect for all man.

Supposedly the (Best godamn army in the world) Note not one of.

Then rapes its young and helpless victims and shoots down inocent by standers in retaliation for something that happend last week.

Yes, it had to be reasonably close, but a close election can be rigged with electronic voting machines and all manner of hijinks.
The corruption is not the flagrant kind. It's a thousand little things, not the least of which is the effect (or non-effect) of the media after the fact.
This is the most dangerous problem. It does not require concealment of the act, per se, if we all pretend it didn't happen.
For example, the president lied outright on numerous occasions saying that yellow cake uranium from Niger had been sent to Iraq before the war.
It was a well known fact that the story was a fraud perpetrated by a known liar who sold the information to the Spanish government, later to be passed to GB and then the US.
It isn't hard to get a video of the president months after the story was proved false saying "yellow cake uranium was sold to Iraq".
That alone is grounds for impeachment and indictment and imprisonment for starting a war based on lies promoted as facts.
Anything else pales in significance. Nobody does anything, even after Scooter libby is indicted for lying to a grand jury. Scooter obstructed information tied to the outing of CIA Valarie Plame, whose husband Joseph Wilson had been sent to find evidence (which evidence did not exist) that yellow cake ahd been sold to Iraq. Wilson had said as much in a NY Times story, and this apparently miffed our high command, for whom Scooter libby worked.
The joke is we know all this--- not denied! It is like saying, "Well, we did it, and it was tantamount to treason, but guess what? Nobody with the power to call us on it will do anything (house Ethics Commitee, watchdog commitees).
And therein lies the rub. The system has broken down, full of a lot of chickens with political and finacial motivations too enticing to stop and do their jobs. It's almost unbelievable. Does this happen elsewhere except in dictatorships in third world countries?

I remember the days of assinations!!! That made em pull thier socks up.

I have walked past the prime minister of Malaysia here in my marina. Just walked past him!! he had a couple of guys with him he was talking to.

I even had my shirt off --I had just been to the shower block.

If it had been Bush or Blair I doubt if I would have been allowed within a kilometer of the marina even though my boat was there.

Clinton makes me puke, Bush is coming up close behind him on my popularity scales.

Ah, but I am not a liberal. Nor, it seems lately, do I fit the description of a Republican. I suppose you could say I am what Republicans are supposed to be, or once were, before they joined the Democrats and sold their country to the corporate interests. Or maybe what Democrats might have been before they cashed in. Either one would be far better than what we have now--- a lot of fat old white millionaires who work the system at our expense.

Yes they were lucky Alan, they have my looks. Have added a photo of their mother to show you just how lucky their escape.
Picture, by the way taken at Captain James Cooks true birthplace - Staithes in North Yorkshire. God knows who that is she has on her knee...some old drunk probably....

I've added a pic of Staithes (for our Australian readers). Cook's birthplace is alleged to be the seventh house counting from the right. The small white cottage near to the bridge. If you visit - I recommend the 'local' - the 'Cod and Lobster.' They even sell ice-cold beer.

Alan, Tim,

Want to very much, but can't ... argue with all you've said.
You've got Florida wrong, though. Incompetence, not dastardly evil deeds, had folks wrongly listed as not allowed to vote. Lots of responsibility on the part of individuals, though. Most were people with the same names as convicted felons; many more were people who did not bring ID with them; poll workers tried to help and work through the problems, but most left, refusing to wait. They have to take some personal responsibility, but self-proclaimed "spokesmen" want to make all poor people perpetual victims.

Once it was apparent that the election was going to be a virtual tie, BOTH parties sent in the lawyers, lobbyists, and professional influence peddlers to sway the result in their guy's favor. The Republicans won that effort, but it was close, with both sides using dirty tactics.

Frankly, I'm disgusted with both major parties. They care now only about getting their turn at the trough, at any cost.

I mentioned in another thread that I watched a debate among the "independent" party candidates. I was pleased and amazed to hear the intelligent, thoughtful discussion of important issues. Those guys need to unite behind one of their number and build a viable third party based on common sense and respectful discussion of what might be best for the entire country. And Bill Gates needs to buy some of my scribbled ideas, for $100 million or so .... probability of happening about equal. :( :(

Dammit, while I was writing a weighty and well-pondered missive in response to the serious tone this thread took, you guys went off on a humorous (or was it humor-less) tangent.

Max, it's obvious that lovely lass has some major emotional problem, probably from her youth. It's resulted in her getting involved with an old drunk. Poor girl. :P :P

This thread, like so many others, has gone downhill, and that's pretty difficult for a forum which deals only with boats (See, Jeff, I'll keep 'em in line while you're off at that rubber suit convention).

The only saving grace for this thread is the fact that Frosty hasn't yet tried to be funny here. :D :D

The blacks in Broward County ought to have swung the dem vote. Did the blacks on "felon lists" ever get a chance to get their votes (re) counted?
But in any case, the question of incompetence should go like this: If incompetence can swing the vote, then dirty tactics will always mimic incompetence.
Any case, water under the bridge. I would be happy with paper ballots and two weeks to cast votes, checks, double checks, exit polls well in line with votes or ask why, take the time to do it right, address grievences, etc.. It's not as if this is some small thing. Look what damage this administration has done--- it is hard to imagine-- and I never would have imagined that a single administration could be so destructive, and a public so disinclined to wake up to it. Even now, when indictments should be rolling, all we see is Scooter getting 30 months. As if his crimes were his own idea. It's an embarrassment.

Charlie, I do agree about the need for a new party. The old tag "independant" means nothing except "other than".
Money's the issue. It shouldn't be, but elections are bought, not won.
When huge interests contribute equal amounts to opposing parties, something is wrong. Election and lobby reform, old idea, just like national health care. You could go cross-eyed wondering why good ideas aren't forced on the government. People are fat and lazy. They will drag the rest down, unfortunately.

A.

Totally agree, Alan. We've had first hand experience with that here. You may have heard of the 13th Congressional District election here in Sarasota last fall. The district covers one county and parts of 3 others. Christine Jennings, a good friend, led in each county except Sarasota, and lost by a few hundred votes. But in Sarasota, the largest county, the Congressional election was crammed onto the top of a page with 3 local elections listed below in larger type. More than 15% of the ballots (18,000+) in Sarasota had no choice for the Congressional election. In the other 3 counties, the "no choice" votes were less than 3%.

Incompetence? Conspiracy? Can't prove the latter, but the former is obvious. Whatever the reason, it's clear that the candidate who led in the polls lost the race and there is no way to verify the results.

Having elections on workdays makes it hard for lower income people to vote. I want weekend election days, paper trail ballots, strict checking of ID's, and a total ban on TV coverage until all polls are closed.

Agreed to all of the above. You know, Charlie, I have asked people point blank if the idea of electronic ballot machines bothered them. Nine times out of ten, they say no. That's the disconnect. They trust the system and have spent the last how many years selectively perceiving only what they want to see. Until that changes, the system will be run by the bums.
