I am completing a composite small boat with the exterior bottom to be sheathed in 9 oz biaxial FB cloth. Gives strength but a rippled surface judging by finish on the interior side of the hull. It's been suggested that I overlay the biax with a 4 oz layer of regular FB cloth while the epoxy in the biax is still wet. I'm told this will almost eliminate the need to do any serious fairing. There seem to be a variety of light weight FB fabrics on the market. What would work best? Is there a better approach that will give strength and a smooth finish?

I presume that you have no female mould to build the boat in as you are sheathing the exterior.
When we - www.explorermarine.co.uk - want a really smooth finish on a one off item we build up the layers with heavy biaxial cloth, then lighter glass and then finish with surfacing tissue - which is basically a very fine glass matt at about 20 grams per sq metre ( for compasison light glass matt is 300 grams per sq metre)
Next, we lay three layers of thinned gel based flow coat and then we use an air sander to sand it all smooth starting with 320 grit and running up to 1500 grit before wet polishing with Farecla G3 polishing compound.
Hard work, but it all comes out very smart in the end.
Good Luck Hugh Mattos
