burning up my rectifier

I have a 1982 115 johnson outboard. I had to replace the rectifier a month ago because it all of suden burn up and my bateries stoped chargeing. When i replaced it my volts gauge on the dash read 16 volts at 5500 rpms. Now it has quit charging again and and i have found that the rectifer is outstandingly hot. Almost to the point of melting. I cant find any wires grounding out. And the rectifier seems to still be puting out power. but the guage on the dash now reads a constant 12 volts like it should all the time. But even if i put a freshly charged batery in it it will only crank the first time and then its dead like somthing is draining it. Please help

sounds like they gave you the wrong rectifier, or it's hooked up wrong.

Sounds like a bad battery connection or a bad battery cable. If you loose a battery connection while the engine is running, the charging system will no longer have a load on it and show high voltage on the gauge. Carefully check all battery cable connections and Very carefully look at the battery cable itself. If you find the cable to be buldged anywhere along the line, you have a corroded battery cable. Don't forget to look under the clamp on the engine cowl where the cables pass through.

one more thing check out the stator it is what feeds the rectifier and if its bad can take out the rectifier
if changing the stator change the rectifier
