Looks like Victor Timoshenko is doing some very impressive work.
I downloaded the file Freeship2_67E+EXE.rar. The size is 0.97 MB. Has anybody installed it?

He says unpack? (move that file?) into directory with Delftship 3.1 ? or Freeship 2.6

The instructions posted a few days ago:

Instruction for version 2.66+ is not need for version 2.67+.
In last version all problem 2.66+ was solved.
Make all as writed for 2.67+ and you can no problem.

Great job Victor Timoshenko ! I downloaded version 2.68 which included all the files needed. It works great! I also downloaded the other compressed folder which included the Design Database and demo hulls.

Could you pick a hull in the Database and run the resistance, propellers sizing, 'passport' etc. and include all the inputs & outputs file in a .pdf file. This would be the 'benchmark' to check & calibrate our installation.

What about adding Kg & Lbs to the weight units for the people working on small boats or models?

I tryed your latest version, but it look like it did not work.
The 2.7+ was strange to me, but after I deleted all language files except the english one it worked well.

I will try to sitt down some time and write a norwegian file for you to add.
Don't look to hard.

Other languages I am do not know :( . You can translate .ini file on your national language and upload on this thread at forum or send me on e-mail and I include your .ini file in future versions.

I'm working on a translation. I'm half trough the file, but I skipped alot of therms because I have no idea what is the best way to translate them.

I hope someone else will take the task to translate the things I can not do.

I do use dictionary, but alot off the words the dictionary spit out suck big time.

Congratulations on upgrading the free version of Delftship.
I thought a lot more people would be doing it as well, but you are the only person I could find.
Do you have any plans to add a "import DXF" option into Freeship?
This would make Freeship the ultimate boat design program for begginers as it does not have all the bells & whistles like the professional programs.
Defltship would eventually be a top end program with all the add-ons people are asking for and I don't want to go down that path.

I concider the freedom to import and export files to and from diferent formats a big pain in the ass to be honest.

If I knew how to write programs I would do sitt down and try to add those features myself, but sadly I don't :(

To write converters on different a format is a not easy task for Freeship as seems some. Only DXF and may be MS2 and GEO

Have you made any changes to the way Freeship produces Michlet input files?

Would it help if I made a version of Michlet that did not use graphics or other user input except for the file produced by Freeship? That way Michlet could be called directly from inside Freeship and Freeship could then read the output from Michlet and plot results of, say skin-friction, wave resistance and total (calm-water) resistance.

There are some ways for integration your programs into Freeship. I am tryed tree methods and solved that the better method to write your external program (on any language C/C++, Fortran,Pascal) and Freeship used only for prepared input data and for output results your program. All data write and read from tmp files, which after used can be automatic deleted if not need for other calcs.

Without new features Free!ship+ must be worked under:

1. Fluxbox,IceWm,WindowMaker,Openbox,Blackbox (Not tested, but as Blackbox is quite close to Fluxbox it is probably ok.)
2. Gnome - Only the main window of FREE!ship is listed in the window menu, so if you loose the focus of a dialog window, your only choice is to kill FREE!ship.

Have you made any changes to the way Freeship produces Michlet input files?

Would it help if I made a version of Michlet that did not use graphics or other user input except for the file produced by Freeship? That way Michlet could be called directly from inside Freeship and Freeship could then read the output from Michlet and plot results of, say skin-friction, wave resistance and total (calm-water) resistance.

You would need to buy as minimum Delphi 7
Very very stable version it is died FREEship 2.6 - and it use.
According to my roadmap stable version FREEship Plus will appear not earlier than in 3-4 years. Then come.

I have tried to import michlet files. The problem is that they leak. When I look at the leak points, I see nothing strange.

Hi Victor,

I find your improvement on Freeship quite impressive. However, I'm not so much interested in calcs in Freeship, but rather on the design features, and the ability to produce accurate 3D models without using other softwares. So, for my own purpose, unfortunately, most of your improvements are useless, even if they are probably very useful for many people !!!
The main improvements I would like to find in Freeship are the following ones :

1- the ability to create and use groups of layers. When you have many layers, over 10, it becomes frustrating to have to select or deselect all the layers but one, when you just want to work on one layer and show it only. If it was possible to arrange layers by groups, or at least to have a specific button to select / deselect all layers all at once, that would be a great improvement.

2- it would be great to have a wizard to generate bulkheads. When you export the project as offsets (txt file), if you previously defined stations where you want bulkheads to be, it is possible to get coordinates of the bulkheads in the txt file, and create new faces in the project for bulkheads (especially if edges are creased, the corners are noted "knuckle"). However, it would be much more easier if there was a direct tool to do that.

3- third improvement - last but not least - the ability to add thickness to faces. This is probably the most difficult thing to do, but how handy it would be. I can imagine that if you give a thickness to the layer in its property window, the layer would be doubled to simulate the thickness, and any connected face would be offset. So to add thickness, the program creates a group of faces instead of a single face, but the group can be managed as if it was a single face. I don't know if I'm very clear, but that's the general idea. Let me know if it's unclear.

As you can see, it's all about improving the design features of Freeship, this time. Okay, for the moment it's just the dream of a user, but maybe you can make the dream come true ! If other people feel like me, please write it.

Let's just give Victor hints on things that we believe could be developed or improved.

Being a programmer myself, I know that creating a software like this and making it work so well (like Freeship does) is definitely not a piece of cake... It is very time-consuming and can become very nerve-consuming too. And Victor is doing it for free.

I'm sure that, bit by bit, Freeship will become a reference to many other (often overpriced) software.

OK can I hint for a way to show a heeled waterline...either by tilting the model and having the waterline stay still or angling the waterline? It would be really nice to be able to see how the water would shape around a heeled hull or one that is down at the bow or stern. Thanks for looking at it.

It would be "really great" if the software were able to calculate the transverse metacentric height at a specified heel angle. One good reason for this is so we could use the formula on this page to calculate the "Stability Factor" of our designs:

in the meantime I've compiled the sources, it looks like fortlib isn't really used even thougth it is referenced. I also had a couple of undefined funcions in the holtrop and propeller functions, I had to comment them to build freeship+.

I'm not doing any modification to the sources right now, I'll wait for the 3.0 sources.

the three links take me to a site in English with the 'Capabilities of Free!Ship' description, then clicking on the download button leads to the download page with all different version of Free!Ship.

If I right click on the download link of Version 3.0+ and save the file I just get a 37k file with nothing in it.
Clicking the link takes me to the next site, picture attached.

Hello,

Each time I try to use Delft yacht series to calculate resistance, I get the error message window (see the attachment).
I have the latest version of Freeship.
Does anybody know why is it happening and how to resolve it?

The problem is in your model - two layers are empty.
Click Layer-"Delete empty" and Delft calcs is Ok.

I have deleted the unused layers but it keeps giving me the error.
And it seems that the error doesn't depend on the model, because I have opened the Freeship! demo7.fbm and tried to make the same calculation.
Now watch this:
- the first time I start the Delft module it works ok. I tell him the speed range and i check the "Extract data from current hull" box. It works, and the graph appears.
- then I exit the Delft module
- then I try to start the Delft again (I want to repeat the calculation) and it gives me the "access violation" error!
I have to exit Freeship+ and start it again to use the Delft again, and I can use it only once.
I have tried the same thing with demo8.fbm and the same thing happens.

The strange thing is that with my hull it gives me the error even for the first module start. With demo hulls the Delft module works, but only once.

P.S.
I would like to hear from other users if they have the same problem with Delft resistance module. Maybe it is something about my PC...

Rest assured, it has nothing to do with your (or any other) model. Whenever you see the "access violation" error message it means that the program is trying to access memory allocated to another program or process. In other words Freeship is trying use memory that is not belonging the freeship. This is a program error that can easily be fixed by the developer doing some basic debugging.

I have exported my model as FEF file and imported it again. When I import the FEF model I can execute Delft module, but only once. The error appears again when I try to repeat the Delft calculation. :(

Hi, Im a student in Engineering and I am tasked to identify the motion of boat when interacting with waves. Im using Free!Ship to export files which then can be inputted into PDstrip to obtain the transfer function values and variables to solve for MSI. Can anyone give me some pointers or directions on how I go about doing this? Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

There is a way to export a maxsurf file to freeship.
It is; export iges from maxsurf and import in into Rhino. From Rhino you can export a VRML file, and VRML files can be read by freeship.

Can hydrolink export VRML?

I have a question. Sometimes Freeships shows me hiqh quality model in prerspective when i choose "shade mode", but sometimes it is in poor quality. Is there a possibility too choose quality?

I tried to change it with "camera / lens" but it seems that this don't work.

I'm using Freeship 3.0+ on Vista.

Take a look at the dropdown box that has the options...low med high highest. this is the resolution of the model. Low is good for adjusting points...highest is best for seeing the results.

Hello dear members. Can anyone tell me how to attach a keel to the hull? I produced a keel (just any to get a feeling how it could work) and sent it. Now it is sitting under the stern waiting for me ***** to move and attach it.

Best way that I have found is to make sure it is a separate layer to start. Then you need extend the top up so it lands above the waterline (issues with hydrostatics). The go to Transform/move and deselect all the layers but the keel and then move it forward to position it properly. I have yet to find a way to "bond" it to the hull so that is part of the hull. The only way I have ever been able to do that is to move the centerline of the hull bottom into a keel shape then extrude the edge down, shape it and then either bend the lines back to the CL or extrude back to the CL. This makes the keel out of the hull itself but really messes with laying out panels if you are trying to get it out of ply.

Sasha, you cannot merge two objects in freeship to make one. As lewisboat said the only way to have it as a part of the hull itself is to use the points on the bottom centerline and then create one. You could import the keel and then create points and lines by lewisboat's method, using the imported keel as a model. When you finish, simply delete the imported keel. If you extrude the bottom centreline, you should not have any distortions on the hull,b ut that is an "if". It depends on a number of factors.

But, when you export the lines into a dxf, you can and should cleanup and create the sections the way they should be for construction.

Hola Cesar. No hay plugins para freeship. Lo que puedes hacer es mirar a la lista de los tipos de archivos y comparar los de freeship con los que puedes importar en rhino. Mira aqui: Archivos - Exportar - (la lista): IGES, dxf, Wavefront obj., STL, FEF, Offsets, Coordinadas.
Quizas, rhino permite importar algun de esos archivos?

There aren't any plug ins...something about saving in a different format and importing it. then explanation about exporting and the various formats. Nope I don't speak Portuguese, only a (VERY) little Spanish, French and Italian but it is pretty easy to decipher.

just to inform .. masrapido is speaking spanish, He is not speaking portugues, and I speak spanish too, and I do understand a little of portugues and italian

Well, I did, but that does´nt mean that the whole community did too! And this is a board serving users worldwide, using the English language for convenience. If a contribution is meant to have a value, it should have a value for all users, otherwise there are ways to communicate on a peer to peer basis like PM and mail!

I got about 1 in 3 of that...not enough to make good sense of it though. I do kinda think Apex1 is right tho...otherwise there would be half a dozen languages in any given post and seeing as only a relative few are more than monolingual it would be in good form to post in the hosting forums native language.

And check your patronising ignorance before you post. Freeship does not have the file JohhnyC is talking about. freeship plus does. And that is exactly what the problem is. The fortlib.dll is missing. You are not reading carefully, but are quick to offer "advice"...Before you come up with more patronising ignorance, please look into the freeship folder and you will see how little you know about the two.

It is also important for johnny to specify the version because fortlib.dll varies from version to version and if he's downloaded the latest, he'd need the latest .dll. Which anyone who had no problems with it can send it to him and that would solve his problem.

Downloading the full version would still be the best option, but johhny said that he tried several times and from various pages.

I have read/searched this site for a few years. Thanks to all who have added to my knowledge. This is by far the best site with the greatest collection of talented people who are (most times) freely willing to share "some" knowledge.

To all who replied: Sorry, I couldn't open the software that wouldn't work to tell you version number. LOL... Never a dumb question, right? The links I was hitting from Victor's posts only lead me to one version. I forget which. I have downloaded 3.01 and have it up and running. Looks really nice as I'm trying to understand it and my potential uses.

I am a mechanical engineer/manufacturing engineer of 30+ years and have been using AutoCAD Mechanical Desktop and AutoDESK Inventor for many years in the manufacturing industry. Solid modeling and developable surfacing has unmatched accuracy in AutoCAD in my opinion. I use variables in my parametrics and I link these to Excell spreadsheet formulas to automatically calculate "simple" coefficients and weight schedules. Other calculations such as center of bouyancy, Metacentric height and Center of Gravity are simple for me to obtain as well.

I am looking at this Free!ship+ software to see what I can add to my understanding and evaluation of hull shapes. Like others with machining/manufacturing/welding skills, I will build my own aluminum boat/yacht. I'm 2 years (very part-time) into the design spiral of a trailerable boat for inland waterway, week-long getaways. I'm not sure I would even attempt it without this site. Long, narrow, efficient, dependable, safe, 75 h.p. diesel with a range around 500 miles or so are a few of my goals.

Hi JohnnyC, welcome aboard :)

I think you'll find, as many of us have, that the Freeship software, in its various forms, is a very quick way to get the initial hull shape you want. Things like the curve of areas, the linesplan, all the important coefficients of form are all readily accessible. It is, however, not ideal for detailed structure and construction drawings, and is best used in conjunction with a bit of conventional CAD software.

Several of us, myself included, have built or are working on projects similar to yours. Do feel free to start a thread on here to discuss your planned design; a lot of members are interested in boats like this and will be very helpful in informing your design goals and approaches.

Also, I've discovered that if I add the step to the hull, like the step on hydroplane's pontoons, the calculations go beserk. CoG, total weight, angle of entry, ust to name a few, they all go their own separate ways.

The Layers info and the Calculations - Design Hydrostatics results will show different numbers for the same hull.

there is a small bug or mistake in the hydrostatics calculation...
the CP (prismatic coefficent) is calculated for the canoe body only but the software takes an added keel into account as well which is not correct...
resulting in a too low CP and therefore restistance calculation (kaper) might not work anymore stating that the CP is out of range...

if i am mistaken regarding the CP calculation please disregard this post but to my knowledge and information the keelarea should not be part of CP computation...

Whether or not to include a keel in the Cp calculation is a matter of some debate. Common practice is to exclude a deep fin, but to include an integrated or long keel. For shapes in between, it's very much dependent on what the designer is used to and how the boats he's comparing it to were measured.

The distinction is generally at the designer's discretion, based on his experience with how previous boats performed. It is probably better to be able to make the distinction yourself (turn off the "use for hydrostatics" property on the layer containing the keel) than to try to come up with an algorithm by which the software will decide where the hull ends and the keel begins.

i know that long or integrated keels should be considered when calculating the CP but not fin keels...
every single graph or comparison i have at hand is for fin keels only and nowhere the keel is taken into account for the CP...

to uncheck the "use for hydrostatics" is not a good option for my liking since you want to have it for CG and dynamic stability calcs...
wouldn't it be better to include a checkbox "fin keel" or something similar and if checked the keel will just be neglected for CP calcs... ?

i think that that is also pretty easy to program and no need to have complicated algorithms and stuff...

No problem. Copy full 3.1 version into new folder and unpack update archive there.
You can have two difference programs 3.1+ and 3.11+ after this.

I got a new laptop with Windows 7

tried everything now for the 4th time still no luck

works perfectly well on my old pc with windows xp
but my new laptop no luck

Are the ones you need not at http://freeship-plus.land.ru/downloadsE.html ?

The fortlib.dll that you seem to be missing is attached, zipped- it should be uncompressed and then put in the same directory as freeship.exe

Having done that, it works fine on my Win7 unit.... you could also try running it in XP SP3 compatibility mode if it still acts up. (Right click freeship.exe, go to Compatibility tab, select XP SP3)

Please download the 3.10 version of the software. this is a full version of the software whereas 3.11 is an add-on to the software. So follow this -
- download the freeship 3.10 version from the website and save it in a folder.
- now download the freeship 3.11 version and copy-paste all the files to the folder where the previous version has been stored.
- now you are done with the complete download and it must work.
- Enjoy, and don't forget to thank those people who work for these excellent freeware software

I can see you have downloaded the full version. Now please extract all these in the zipfolder to a folder. Then try, it must work.

Manie, you are not trying to make it work form a zipped file, are you? you need to unzip it first in a folder, usually the "C:\program files" directory in your PC. Then you can start the freeship.exe .

Finally got it working
BUT - still cant figure out why i had problems
I finally uninstalled all winzip and all freeship and started over completely fresh

Firstly i installed the new WinAce Archiver v2.39 to a file
then i installed the 4th=last option of the 4 that you can choose from Freeship 3.1 also to a file
just followed the prompts and one shot easy

please keep in mind that i am not a newcomer to Freeship 3.1, I have had it on my PC for a couple of years and even still have the old 2.86? version as well. The new 3.1 works exceptionall well for me because it can develop plates, my micro and the 8m cat were developed on freeship.

Hi All,

I get the warning that the russian download site (see link above) wants to install software on my PC when I first reach it. That is in general in the world of safe interneting a no-no. I can not say if what it is trying to install is safe or not, but that is why its a no-no - the user should be informed and be able to make an intelligent choice.

That being said, is there a location or a way I can download it without the site trying to install software un-asked? Until I know its safe, I can not recommend it to others.

Depositfiles is flippin' annoying. Obviously, Victor alone can't be expected to pay for hosting and server bandwith. But personally, I would love to see a move back to Sourceforge or another well-respected open source site for hosting the Freeship+ repositories and executables.

We are all using the freeship software. I dont think many among us are paying any amount for the usage of the software. That means the funding available is only from the side of victor. We shouldnt expect to get everything for free, at our comfort. It will be better if we support him to maintain a better website with its own web space to store software, rather than using these mal-websites like rapidshare, depositfiles etc.

i have been using Freeship for many years and have down loaded it originally 2.65 to my pc and now 3.1 to my laptop
I have never had problems with spam or viruses
just follow the prompts carefully and choose your selections so that you get what you want, that way you will be ok

Since Victor is continuing the development where I left off another and possibly better option would be to revive the freeship project at the sourceforge site which has been dormant since january 2007.
Of course this would require a commitment of Victor to follow the GPL license (distribution of the source code of every release etc) and also other sourceforge rules.
Since the sourceforge site is a wel known and trusted site, and already hosts all official releases documentation and tools up till v2.6, and most of all is completely free to use I think this could be a more elegant solution.
It also has space for a website, so that would be covered as well.
If Victor agrees we could discuss me handing over my admin rights of the project to him.

The sourceforge website, unlike this forum, is a platform especially created for the development and distribution of open source software. It also has features such as a forum, bug tracker, website, version control and much more. So this would mean that all these features could be accessed in one single place and on a permanent basis.

Apart from the fact that these features are not available at boatdesign.net I doubt it was ever the intention to distribute software in a forum such as this one.

But it's up to Victor.
