which paring chisel or slick?

hi!

I am looking to buy a paring chisel and a slick of about 1 1/2" and 2" size and would like to get some suggestions for a good model. Does anyone have any suggestions?

for that size (not really a slick is it? a slick is about 2 1/2 to 3" wide) go for the Japanese any day! For a real slick.........mines English (can't remember the name but had to get from the 'States', bloody stupid really) A Sorby I think, big, heavy but magic!

Hirsch or Two Cherries brand (same chisles but different handles) are consitently rated as best value for the price.

If you're going to go with a Japanese design, Japan Woodworker's white steel and blue steel chisels are highly rated.

Have a look at barrtools.com, reasonable prices, haven't bought anything there myself though.

They sell chisels by C.I. Fall of Eskilstuna, Sweden - never heard of them before but the description says that they've been in business since 1894. It might be worth looking for them since they are made in your own country.

Also, depending on your intended use, you may want to consider this:

It's a 2" heavy duty firmer chisel by Henry Taylor. This is more of a "slick" type of chisel than the others and is better suited to heavy work in large timbers. Hery Taylor is a English brand so you may be able to find it closer to your home than this source in the USA.
