A stubborn end user for Patrol Boat has asked for the boats to be of "Unsinkable Type:confused: , Self Bailing & Self Righting". Can anyone suggest the best way to deal with these requirements?

Other requirements are, Alluminum Hull, 4 ton Payload (including 16 Persons), 25 Knot Cruising Speed @ full payload, ability to survive sea state 5/6, length 12-14 meters, propeller driven, inboard engine. Mono hull and catamarans, both are acceptable.

I am a nobody :( in boat design field so I would highly appreciate suggestions from your pro's assuming that reasoning with the end user will not work and I want this deal very badly.

Here it is, everything you ask for and some.

The 47' motor lifeboat is designed as a first response rescue resource in high seas, surf & heavy weather environments. They are built to withstand the most severe conditions at sea and are capable of effecting a rescue at sea even under the most difficult circumstances. They are self-bailing, self-righting, almost unsinkable, and have a long cruising radius for their size. It is the replacement for the aging 44' MLB fleet.

Make the check out to Figgy :)

If I'm not mistaken the design is owned by Raytheon corporation and licensed to numerous builders world wide. We, Canadian Coast Guard, have about 50 of them by a number of builders across Canada. USCG probably has 4 or 5 hundred of them by now. The original design was kevlar but aluminum is much more practical. We've bounced them off of rock breakwaters with narry a scratch!

Not that many yet...

There are (presently) 117 operational, being added to monthly. The total (to be delivered over 5 years) will be about 200.

They (the 47's) are replacing the 44s. An interesting note about the 47s; if overturned, the vessel will return to an upright position in 8 seconds or less.
Sweet.

My God! Someone wanting a "Patrol Boat" capiable of carrying a combat/swimmer squad thinks it might actally get shot at! What is the military thinking? Have the given him a medal yet?....:D

Yes you can do this even cheaper than an MLB. There a vendor that offers that type of hull. No, I do not work for them, but they are a hometown company.

If you have any questions feel free to contact: SAFE Boats International, Norseman Marine Products Inc, or the United States Patent Office for a copy of the following Patents. #5,282,436 and #5,647,297, and 5,870,965.

Edit to add: MLB's are not self bailing (they sank the first new one during testing) and SAFEBoats may not be self-righting, but now you have all the pieces.

A few of the boats are actually expected to work in Sudan & Ivory coast on UN Peace Keeping mission.

Thanks a lot Figgy, Knotty, Jehardiman & Longliner I think I have sufficient material  in hand to go forward. You guys have been of great help:) :) .

Hafiz sounds like your looking for intrinsic Stability i would think about this Design your boat as it where full of water use a number of sealed buoyancy compartments make the draft about half of the beam ensure the centre of gravity is below the Buoyancy compartments and the Meta-centric height is as far as possible above the COG it will self right and float when full of water. With this kind of design recq. make a scale model and tank test it

Thanks Alex. Most of what you said went way above my head as I am a nobody with regard to boat design. But I will forward your info to the people I am working with.

We have a patrol boat designer on here who will likely plug his rather innovative design to you soon enough... his gallery's http://www.boatdesign.net/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=8724

Speak to Vosper Thornycroft

They are the world leader in this sort of things. One of their subsideries is Halmatic that builds loads of self righting boats for the RNLI.

When I was still at HQ we tested the predecessor to the SAFE BOAT for flotation. It had so many flotation chamber that even though we punctured at least half it still passed the federal requirements. You would have to put a lot of weight in those boats to sink them!
