Hello,
I have been wondering for a while about boat/ amphibious houses. After the storm, either the Discovery Channel or the History Channel talked about how the Netherlands has started to build buildings which will float when there are floods and land back on there foundations after the flood waters rise, by using poles to keep the building in the right place when it changes altitude. I was wondering if these can be made hurricane proof, who builds them, what the quotes are for building them, and if these can be built to compensate for FEMA guidelines.
Many people on the Biloxi Point and other poorer areas on the coast can only spend up to 50,000 US dollars on homes and can’t build because of the height regulations given by FEMA. Could the system these houses use compensate for these? Since the building could be built anywhere the price for supplies and workers could be cheaper in so helping the people.
Thanks,
Blake

Search thread http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/showthread.php?t=10323 for quite a lot of info on floating homes and even cities.
