Book to start with...

Dear Group,

We are a small team planning to design and built our own 45' motor yacht, with a fiberglass hull. As the 3d designer, I would like to start by reading comprehensible and complete books. I've found those on Amazon:

Elements of Yacht Design (Skene)
Principles of Yacht Design (Larsson, Eliason)
The Elements of Boat Strenght (Gerr)
Understanding Boat Design (Brewer)
How to design a boat (Teale)
Building Skin-on-Frame Boats (Morris)
All about Powerboats : Understanding Design and Performance (Marshall)

I'm afraid that some are on sailboat only and some may not be up to date.

Let me know what should be the *best* book for what I'm planning to do.

Simon,

Principles of Yacht Design (Larsson, Eliason) is the only one worth while and the only one you really need. Make sure you get the 2nd edition of Principles which incorporates power boat design.

You need to have somebody on your team with some experience. What you are attempting to do is not in a book somewhere. If it where then anybody could do it. After you've hired an old time boat designer to keep you out of trouble read:

Elements of Boat Strength by Dave Gerr.

SimonLa Boat design and construction is not inherently difficult but it does require patience, attention to detail and methodical approach. The empirical rules for construction should be more than adequate for the engineering, as long as they are followed exactly. Dave Gerr’s book as recommended is an excellent starting point for this.
Other books worth looking at are
“The nature of boats” by Dave Gerr
“Guide to powerboats” by Sorensen
Tip. Drawing and designing the boat is a very small part of the whole process, don’t let the romance cloud the reality.

Maybe try something a little smaller to start with, that way it is less expensive to learn from your mistakes.
