Fishing Boat Designs 2 Hull?

Hi

I found the free FAO fishing boat design plans. I am very intrested in making the 7.4m boat. However, I need the boat to have a plaining hull. I dont believe it all ready has a plaining hull, is this true? Secondly, If id dosent are there other plans very similar to this one which has a plaining hull or how can I modify it to have a plaining hull.

Hi Alex,
Welcome to the forum. Yes this boat will plane with the designed hp. Your question or one similar is asked everywhere boats are discussed. “I like the design, but can I make it bigger or go faster”, or something like that.
The FAO boats were designed with a heavy stress on ease of construction, efficient use of materials and efficient use of power. If you change something in the design it usually requires changes in another area also. It is best to define the intended use for the boat and then choose from the designs that meet your requirements. This boat may fit your needs, if not tell us what they are so we can better help you.

I live in Bangkok and small narow fishing boats are king here, (thai long tail). I dont want a long tail because of their ortragously loud motor and iniffecient motor. I need just a basic boat preferably with an inboard,( Im going to marinize a old VW Diesel) to cary me around as well as somtimes transpoting the crew and gear, I'm an ocean videographer. The boat should be fast as the canal can get very dangrous with out a fast boat.

I am amazed that these boats can get of on a plane with only 8hp from a diesel. How can I tell the difference b/t a displancement hull and a plaining hull for this type of boat.

Any Sugestions?

I will correct myself before some one else. The speed/ length ratio for this boat is about 1.4; anything below 1.5 is a displacement hull. Things always seem to look different in the morning. Sorry for the error. :(

How do you calculate the speed to length ratio. If I put a 50hp motor on this boat will it plane?

I think it would plane with a lot less hp than that. The question becomes, is it wise to put a 50 hp motor in a boat designed for 8hp?

Speed/Length Ratio is, knots divided by the square root of the water-line length.
