View Full Version : I have a dream - how to build it?

I have a dream.
I'm guessing chances are you have a dream too. The boat design dot net galleries are full of them.
What's the difference between a dream and reality?
Funding, money, cash (FMC).
With FMC you can put together talent, buy the experience you lack and make connections, the connections you need to get things done. Because it's not what you know, it's who you know.
I don't know anyone, they don't know me.
I have a dream, you have a dream.
Help me figure this out, and help yourself at the same time.

About link-1; DoD SBIR & STTR Programs.......................I've read a few things in there before, most of it went over my head. I suspect the request have been written for a pacticular firm or university in mind and not qualified outside competition, and least of all a dreamer tinkering in his garage.
About link-2; I think this is what they call an "inside track" firm. You actually hire or purchase your required connections - money talks, right? Takes money to make money, blah blah blah. Is this the correct perception? Maybe I should just call them up or e-mail.........WTF, what do I have to lose?
We could get into a chicken and egg type discussion, A & B.
A; I have a great design on paper, built a few models, conducted a few experiments - gee it would be nice to screw around with this full time for a few years. How do I do this without a rich wife?
B; I'd like to screw around for a few years while I go through a mid-life crisis, what vehicle can allow me to do this? (sarcasm)
NOTE: Your thoughts may be as serious or as silly as you wish - don't be affraid to think outside the box. Or better yet inside the box - how have other people made their dreams come true?
Depending on how big it is, there's a few designers out there that will help you with a full size hull that you could build yourself.

Not many of the people I've read about "making it" have had MBA's to start out with. MBA's are taught to follow the rules, entrepreneur's have a habit of breaking the rules and bucking the herd mentality. Or is that just how it looks from the outside looking in?
Build it and they will come?
ASIDE; Cute Quote:
http://www.planetrealtor.com/Florida/FLRealtorMagazine/SGMarketingPlan03.cfm
I’ve discovered that what most associates want is not a good marketing plan, but instead, somebody to tell them that what they have already decided to do will work, even if it’s a bad idea.
Question: Does it really matter what your dream is? Isn't there a standard formula to success one must follow?
Okay, I'm going back to work now, someone is waiting for their house plans.

The United Arab Emmeriates and the Saudi Arabia gave much support to OBL. However the CIA gave training and money for decades. In fact the year prior to 9/11/2001 the terrorist were being given flying lessons in Florida paid by the US tax payers..........the reporter who followed this money trail and discovered these links has somehow faded away from public memory.
This is not what I had in mind, but I do know deep pockets when I see them.;)

Found this thing called DARPA............funded lots of cool things over the years (like the Sea Shadow).

Questions I should be asking..........................................
http://www.darpa.mil/ato/contact.htm
# What are you trying to accomplish?
# How is it done now, and with what limitations?
# What is truly new in your approach which will remove current limitations and improve performance? How much will performance improve?
# If successful, what difference will it make?
# What are the mid-term, final exams or full scale applications required to prove your hypothesis? When will they be done?
# How could this transition to the end user? (usually DoD)
# How much will it cost?

See this thread:
http://boatdesign.net/forums/showthread.php?t=10499
Note: the UAE kicked out a CNN reporter last week - he was asking too many hard questions. Apparently not all of Osma bin Laden's support was pre-9/11/2001 although we have been told they have been cooperating since then - I want to know the truth, we deserve to know the facts.
EDIT: UAE government, citizens and policies may not all be in step, troubling to say the least. Then again I'm not much in step with everything my government does either.

No problem, enjoyed the ride.
My thesis: No money, no boat - how to get money?
I found the following bit of history to be of interest and relavant. Not a lot happens without money, which is more or less why I started this thread.
RE: Yesterday in the Google group "alt . rec . hovercraft" site.
Written by "anonymous"
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.rec.hov...f7898fab53e165a (http://groups.google.com/group/alt.rec.hovercraft/browse_thread/thread/843c5656407c8b67/9f7898fab53e165a?hl=en#9f7898fab53e165a)
Before diving into hovercraft business ventures, it may be wise for
prospective entrepreneurs visit http://www.decastris.com/hcc/canada.htm.
Canada has a very rich history of failed commercial hovercraft ventures,
perhaps because back in the "good-ol-days", Canada had an active
hovercraft research (and development funding) program sponsored by the
National Research Council. Some failures were for technical reasons, but
many failures occurred simply because impatient bankers called loans
before any decent amount of cash flow could be realized in the start-up
ventures. Low budget, fly-by-night ventures may be possible in some parts
of the world, but remember that anything built in Canada for commercial
purposes (that means for resale) must meet Transport Canada requirements.
While in theory that should provide for a superior product (some may argue
against that), it can also complicate things for low-budget startups.

Kachi..be daring man..:!:what ever you are very good at..for sure can be turn into money making instrument. You want money or you want boat :?: Some can have both..:)some can have only one..:(up to you to decide.Middle line compromise is to have a bit of both..:)thats why trailerboat are very famous. You can have a bit of both..I had own them before..hook up to my Nissan saloon car..not even a 4X4..have car will travel man..One boat for the river, mining pond and lake..a 24 er with 40hp Mercury for fishing in the straits of Melaka..a Fletcher Arrow with 70 hp Johnson just for the fun of it..ah..:)Now I'am into something else..if you don't mind having a luxurious wooden yacht thats able to circumnavigate..depend on how luxury you want it to be..it can be very basic and spartan..hey..its your boat and its your money man..e-mail me.. Catamaran is not something that I know very well..but I do have friends who built big catamaran..40er..60er..at very reasonable price..just pay it in Ringgit..!not in USD..!at RM3.7 to1 USD:D..if what you want is a boat.. achievable..if you want to wait until you have enough..o.k..you can wait..no harm..it is very hard to increase income..I face the same problem..but look around there is places thats your 'small' income is actually big..!Ah..now I morphined into the grumpy old man again.. :D :D

I'm really not talking about obtaining a recreational craft/boat or another toy. I'm talking about doing something of sustenance with my life. My current business and career is giving me this hollowed out feeling. I’m feeling burnt out I guess – spring can’t come too soon.
I'm tired of dealing with developers; I’d rather be a developer myself and perhaps even develop an unusual craft in lieu of a building project (homes and such).
Maybe I should do house boats. Just kidding.
NOTE: I only found the picture of those girls on that boat, not my boat, can only dream about it.

It has me thinking about possible property tax loop holes to help make something like this even more attractive.
There is a thread in the main boat design forum on floating living spaces, started just a few days ago. It will be interesting to see what happens to it.
