I am looking at a DPX-A sterndrive w/the 147:1 gear ratio to match up to my 502mag.
Is this a good sterndrive?
Will this drive match up to my engine?
Is it a good match?
My boat is a Chris Craft 262.
I have heard that Volvo will not respond to questions about matching this drive to hp?

Volvo has a manual to match props to HP and different boats. It is available at your local dealer.

I checked. My local does not!!
What HP would break a DPX drive, offshore.
I am looking at pumping 720HP through a DPX from a petrol engine...

I don't know what the max HP the DPX is rated at? Although I've seen people with 1000+ HP matched to the DPX at Lake Powell. You should contact Volvo directly or go to this site www.marinepartsexpress.com/vp_outdrives.htm.
Good luck,

Thanks EZ.
The issue with the drive is ( as far as I know ) you can drive 1000hp through it on the lake, but in the rough sea, getting 'air time' your loading is trippled, so something less than 1000 will break it.
Much like 750 HP petrol will npot break it, but 750HP diesel will break it.
