L on 25" transom

I've got a project flats boat that has a 25" transom. Why would a flats boat have the long of transom? Anyway, I've got an 150 L (20") Merc that I am putting on the boat and would like to know if anywone has used a jack plate in the "reverse" direction? This is assuming all components will have clearance for trimming and turning. I could just cut the transom down, but wanted to get some opinions.
