If one changes the sail area of a boat, for example going from 600 sq. ft. to 800 sq. ft. of sail area , does it become very complicated and costly. Do you have to change the whole configuation of the boat. Does it become even more so with a ketch.

In a ketch you can enlarge the sail area with a staysail. That is a jib-like sail between your mizzen and mainmasts. It is also possible to fly two spinakkers or a spinakker and a drifter.

Depends how you plan to add it.
If you want lengthen the boom for example then that is going to move the Centre of Effort aft - which will give you more weather helm - whether this is a problem or not depends on many factors, and could be countered for example with a short bowsprit.
