Yacht Tonnage Survey- Nieuwpoort Belgium

Help!
The apparently only surveyor in Belgium authorised by the MCA to do a tonnage survey (about 30 mins I seem to remember) of my yacht has broken his leg - so wont be surveying anything until after the end of Sept, which means by the time I complete the UK Pt 1 reg I will be crossing Biscay in November. Eugh!

Is there anyone out there that can help without turning a 150 Eur survey into a 1000 Euro survey in travel expenses

Hi, Paul;

I am appointed as a Tonnage Surveyor for Transport Canada and was recently asked to survey a vessel being built here in Nova Scotia for clients in England. All that was required to allow me to survey the yacht for the MCA was that I sent copies of my CV and Tonnage Surveyor appointment to MCA Cardiff and they then authorized me to do the survey on their behalf. Possibly a tonnage surveyor near you could take the same route for you.

however they seemed to think it would take a long time to get it and be very expensive even when it was accepted. I know from experience that even a simple email to the MCA can take a month to get answered.

Try the Lloyd's Register office in Antwerp, I'm sure they can help you out!

Thanks Peter, good idea.
I did so, and they wanted 4,500 eur for the same survey that the RYA charge 175 quid for (in the UK), and the other surveyor 150 Eur for.
To be fair its clearly not the "same" survey but the big ship equivalent, but for me the result is identical! so it is the same.. if you see what I mean..

This is driving me nuts ! there cannot be just 1 yacht surveyor with MCA approval in N. France/Belgium!

Since 3 emails have gone unanswered to the MCA its time to get on the phone and see if I can get an answer...

Any other ideas greatfully received as I will be crossing Biscay in December at this rate... !

Hi Pete

Went round in circles for a few more weeks (over 2 months now!) then gave up. Finally the MCA have told me I can have "provisional" registration for 3 months for an extra 50 quid allowing me to sail her to the UK for a survey which is what I am going to do !

Credit to Lloyds Antwerp, when I pointed out that it was a 30min survey they contacted the MCA they did reduce the price...to 1000 Euros.- I assume that was the point at which you had got involved! One thing though the steps that they said I should go through were totaly different to the instructions by the MCA.

Paul,

Resently the tonnage procedures have changed a bit, and we have to depend on info we get from MCA through HQ, but we don't know what MCA told you. Tht's what the confusion is about.
But anyway, always glad to help. Hope everything works out now!
