I went to the second link. All they're doing is securing the astronauts.

Well, that appears normal to me... I wouldn't fly either without fastening the seatbelts.

A light year is closer to 600 trillion miles... or the distance light travels in a year. 186 272mph * 60 seconds * 60 minutes* 24 hour* 365.25 days= 5.87829727 × 10 to the 12 power

mydauphin, a slight error there in your distance formula - distance in 1 year = speed times period, well the speed you suggested is in MPH so times period is 24*365.25 or thereabouts .... but that number may be miles / second? (Thanks PAR)

This is precisely why I don't usually play in the open forum sand box, with too many ill informed, speaking as if they aren't.

Predicting solar flare activity is problematic at best. Current practice is to literally count sun spots and play the "averages" game, which is really a crap shoot. NOAA (and NASA to some degree) is the best source for flare activity and they are suggesting a G-3 to G-4 level of geomagnetic field disturbance which has already peaked out. Currently they are not expecting storm activity in the next 24 hours and haven't observed any in the last 24 hours.

http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/SWN/index.html

We aren't going to fry or suddenly get a tan, though some radio frequencies may experience outages or disruption. These are normal occurrences and though the latest round of activity is the worst we've seen in 20 years, it is not anything to be particularly concerned about. In the last two decades, we've "armored" equipment to a better degree, so that outages and difficulties will impact less then the events in 1989. I remember the activity in '89 and there were issues, including some black outs, but the world didn't end back then either.

I will not even jump into the war is profitable thing as it's obvious to any one who knows history. For what it's worth, the most profitable industry historically speaking has been munitions sales, followed closely by insurance.

Light speed is a little shy of 700 million MPH.

"munitions sales, followed closely by insurance..." are profitable, therefore, what, it is profitable for a government to spend trillions on wars so that FN Herstal can sell them guns?
"...too many ill informed, speaking as if they aren't..." Stick to boats then maybe, Mr. Pot-Calling-the Kettle-Black-inimitably-self-qualified-on-any-subject-broached...
Is a "socioeconomicist" anything like a socioeconomist?
Marxist (as you should well know) "Perpetual War Economy" is distinguished from "Permanent Arms Economy". Cold War is good enough "stimulus" but think of the cool things that could be accomplished if money didn't have to be spent on wars. Shoot, What if Europe defended itself? Think of the feel-good infra-structure the U.S. could build!
Leftist catchphrase "Military-Industrial Complex" implies collusion between militarism and war profiteering by a subsidized industry. Halliburton loses money in Iraq. The only other company in the World capable of doing what they do is Schlumberger (French, Dutch). The lower-life-form Iraqis just contracted the Chinese and French to build some infrastructure. Doesn't it seem reasonable that if the victors were so cynically profit-oriented as to start a war for money that they would, at least, require that contract clean-up and infra-structure repair were awarded to US companies?
How would the loser Italians, Germans and Japanese (War Starters, all) have done without being propped up by the U.S. at the end of WWll? You people would be speaking Russian, the Japanese would have been suredly executed by the Chinese, to a man, in retaliation for the Rape of Nanking and other Japanese atrocities. To collude there means there is a conspiracy (same root, BTW) that people like you love, live, draw nurishment from. Conspiracy implies an evil nature or corruption coupled with extreme competency. I think Cheney is supremely competent but I doubt your biased "news"source agrees. The "evil" lies in the controlling (leftist, fascist) end of the spectrum.

Please hear the words of this old communist:

You can find the transcript of that anti-patriot's speech here:

I also find this analysis very lucid, but you might not think of it the same way:

Yes, Hitler fresh in everyone's memory, Ike warned of allowing the "complex" to take over. Where'd you dig up this fluff speach to appease the doves?
Yes, mercs have existed since the beginning of war. It's a shame that some people don't just allow the job to get done and that these guys are necessary. They have kinda become the new draft.
You're descendant of the part of Europe we saved or the part who's ass we kicked? If of the part we saved, you have several more generations to do whatever we want you to do. If you are of the other part, you are a slow learner and should keep your mouth shut about politics. Really, either way, showing some humility would go some ways towards remuneration.

Ike was right and his analysis was farsighted. But his words have been forgotten by the most. It appears to me that the "complex" has taken over already.

But anyways, I just can't find any connection between what you are saying and what I wrote about middle-east situation, which seem to have touched some open nerve there. Strange, because I've never mentioned U.S. in that post... Ah, wait - it was my mentioning of Dick Cheney's name that has upset you, was it? Curious reaction. Are you his relative or something? Or you're just in a business relationship with him, Halliburton, or some other global dealer of death?

I have already expressed my great opinion about american folks, particularly those I've had pleasure and honor to meet.
I have far less consideration about fanatics, regardless of the flag they are waving. They have too much repressed anger inside, dangerous stuff. Unfortunately you appear to be one of them.
Posting hanged Mussolini's pic in an attempt to offend me (because you saw "Italy" near my nickname) and calling iraqi people "lower-life-forms" (your post #23) only puts you at the other extreme of fanatism, and makes you no better than any common taliban.

First things first. We drug our feet going to war with Iraq. Partially because we were weak and not ready, partially trying to muster unanimous support for the action (my stance after this debacle is that we need to be ready, NOW, and not give a rip what the world thinks). This was to appease people like you. This gave Saddam time to get WMDs into Syria and dump them into the Euphrates. The people of Iraq know this and our soldiers were welcomed as heros at the overthrow of Saddam. We went in at great monetary expense with no ideas of "profiting" from it because it was the world opinion (minus Russia, Germany, France who stood to lose many investments), because it was the right thing to do. Even if Iran wanted to be a thorn in our side, even though they were backed by Russia, we stayed and fought the insurgents while tip-toeing around the populace as best we could, not being able to tell bad from less-bad (or even "good", though I'm beginning to wonder how much good even exists there). After this condenced version of that aspect of history, as I see it - after our military rebuilding infrastructure at MY expence only to have insurgents blow it it up again, after huge expenditures that weakened our country in every way other than in military knowledge, one would think these people would remember to apppreciate us like the day our tanks rolled into Bagdad. One could argue that our intelligence should have had the foresight to know that insurgents would flood Iraq from the corners of the muslim world to give us a bloody nose but our intelligence did know this, just not the scale of the abetting of the insurgents by the populace. This is one reason I call them "lower life forms". The other is that they would hire a non-coalicion-country contractor to put in phone lines, etc.. It truly offends.
(By the way, Fabrizio Quattrocchi will be remembered as one of the bravest men who never should have died.)
Yes, an open nerve. I was not a fanatic until many in the world turned on us but I AM now. This is true and I do not care what the world thinks. If any muslim wants MY respect, they will be willing to step up to bat and fight these Taliban *******s or report terrorist activity to our military.
The reason for the Mussolini posts is that he is the face of fascism, and yes, he was from Italy and I find it strange that someone form Italy would talk about US fascism when, sometimes making errors, the US generally tries to do the right thing and, until Johnson then the current administration, I don't believe that we have had an aligning of government capable of being fascist. By definition, it just does not fit.
Dick Chaney IS THE MAN! Did you see him slap down Obama in back-to-back speaches recently?

Look, I don't want to dispute your vision of Iraq war because the true reasons for it are so wrapped in mystery that everyone has a right to see it his way. Maybe even G.W. Bush doesn't have a clear idea about why did he do it.

I don't share your version of the story because I don't believe those good fellas (Bush, Cheney, Rumesfield and Wolfowitz - true samaritans) would have started this hell for humanitarian reasons. It is a part of my right to see it my way, for the same above said reasons.

You consider Cheney the Man, I wouldn't be confident enough to buy a pair of shoes form him. Legitimate points of view.

But this one...:

I don't know what post have you been reading and referring to but I really don't recall calling US fascist in any way.
It's all a movie you have created in your head out of nothing and then you have exploded thinking about it (the movie).
Let's stop it here.

And don't search for other pics of Mussolini's relatives. This is the only way I could like a Mussolini:
