I've been lurking and posting around here for a few years now. Read a lot, posted a little and learned. I guess that's what it's about, isn't it?

I picked up a lot of "transferable" skills doing my restoration project. Occasionally my wife stops down to the boat club to see how things are going. I'm lucky, she rarely bothers me......until now.......

Seem's that she's wanted the master bath remodeled for a while. So we figured fair is fair...I'm doing the boat, she wants to do the bath. So she finds a contractor that comes very highly recommended (he does do nice work) but he charges a fortune for it.

So, (stupid man that I can sometimes be) when I see the estimate for the labor I say something like "Geez, that's a hell of a lot of money". Well, one thing leads to another and I've been "hired".

There goes my February! New corner shower, new tile floor, vanity, toilet, painting, lighting....oh well, it's not so bad I guess.

PAR, do you have a pair if knee pads I can borrow?

When I did the rebuild of ours I had one heck of a time getting the other half to cooperate and open up one HER list of priorities of the remodel. Since I had to completely redo from the deck up it left a lot of latitude on what actually could be done but it needed planning. Well the one thing she decided was a must have was a shower stall. Well since the shower stall wouldn't fit through any of the doors or windows after completing the outside walls I was left to sticking it inside in the middle of the deck just before inserting last wall section. Having that darn shower in the middle of everything and constantly moving it around until installation was maybe the biggest PIA about the entire rebuild. I guess it's just one of the sacrifices we men just have to make if we're to remain happy and satisfied.

The amount would be that the contractor charges less what you do it for.
Since you do the work it's only fair the difference goes to you.

I have a pair of knee pads, purchased after my complaining about the tile I put in our freshly remodeled bath. I can mail them up to you if need be, they're nice ones and quite effective if you also have to spend a lot of time kissing ass.

I never had enough money to have a mechanic fix the car or a contractor put in a new kitchen, so starting in my early 20's I stumbled through. I've always had a knack for these sort of things. Fixing, repairing, modifying, etc. always came easily to me. I could take something apart, look at it and just know what was wrong and plod through a repair or modification. Eventually I got pretty good at it. Now it's fairly easy for me and I can be intentionally creative, where as previously, creativity may have been a mistake.

Enjoy your new found skills. I put in a cool new master bath a few years back (as a preventive measure and just to shut her up). I used really straight grained, quarter sawn Douglas fir and made a floating double sink. It's all finished bright, epoxy embalmed, curved fronts, molding to match the tall boy in the corner she keeps her underwear in, etc. When I flood coated the epoxy, she though I was a God. Take advantage, you'll get extra nookie credits for the effort. I save them up and cash in when I screw up something, but you can use them for whatever you like.

I think I'll stick to the manufactured cabinetry PAR. I'm probably where you were thirty years ago but since I'm 54 instead of 24 I'm more patient and can plan a little better. I can't get too crazy about it though, because I'm still determined to get the boat in this season.

Being a CIO (California-improved Okie), I grew up taking it for granted that people worked on their own houses and cars; I was amazed when I found out that grown, healthy men took their cars to garages. Of course, cars were simpler then....

I was also shocked to find that people aren't born knowing how to swing a hammer properly, and have to learn. I don't remember ever not knowing how.

Unfortunately, I get no brownie points for the remodeling I do or the vehicles I work on. My wife thinks it's perfectly normal that I can do those things, and simply expects it of me She's hard to impress.

It's sounds like your better half is similar to mine Troy. The worst part for me is she's actually good at stuff. She's a much better welder then me and she knows which end is boxed on a combination wrench, so blowing some BS past her isn't going to work. She also knows the right way to do things. It sucks being me sometimes, though now that I've had a heart attack, I get to play the "I'm tired, I better not push it . . ." card.

Par, Troy, seems we have the same problem ! We have to change this to our advantage somehow. I got mine as far a s mowing the lawn, washing the cars, fixing taps and a host of other things.

The problem is she still expects me to be around instead of letting me go off fishing so she can get the stuff done.

Any advice there ???
