Where Are The Women

Hi everyone

Are there any women in this forum Or are we just a bunch of MCP's?

Women are quite active in other forums (Cruisers Forum comes to mind). Surely we can do with a few of them around, always nice to have a womans perspective as well, even how crooked it may be.

Now that you bring it up, I don’t think I have ever run into any women in the business of design except for Charles Street’s daughter who worked at S & S. Are any women attending the schools of yacht design such as the Landing School or YDI in Maine.?

This is an issue we often talk about in enginnering circles. But due to the reverberations of the 80's feminist movement it's considered bad form to highlight differences between the ability of sexes. It seems that it's suddenly OK to talk about this with a number of recently released books such as "Brain sex.." and "The difference..."

It's got something to do with the physiological differences in the brains between men and women. The male brain is considerably better at 3d mental perception (tests suggest up to 25 % better). The term "spacial ability " that refers to the brains ability to model complexity, leads to mens dominance of fields such as music composure, chess, complex 3d engineering design.

It's not that women can't do it, it's just that men find it naturally easier due to brain physiology. Our society naturally favours the more gifted in any discipline so we end up dominating certain fields.

Have to say there is some real hot french and italian chicks on the yacht design course I'm on... The ultimate chat up line is 'I've got the use of *boat name* this saturday, any of you girls fancy a sail?'. You just can't beat sailing on a sunny day with three fine young ladies on a quick sportsboat...

Seriously, though, there isn't always an indication of gender. For all we know, there are many women in the forum that prefer not to advertize it. I think in the new generation of sailors, there are a lot more girls than they used to be. They are also more participating in active roles instead of just going for the ride.

Gonzo, that final sentance really has me confused - "more participating in active roles instead of just going for the RIDE!" That plus the comment as about boys seems very interesting and thought provoking!

And with that in mind if you were a girly would you admit it??

Firstly, I make a very ugly girly. Secondly, women used to be mostly either passangers or "first mate". That is changing(the second part only)

whew glad about that Gonzo! Mind you sailed with a woman 'Captain' comercially some years back - intersting to note that the 'Captain' of a merchant vessel is called a 'Master' the feminine of which is 'Mistress' reakoned she wernt one of those (her words! Mmmmm)
