Ok Lurvio - a partial answer! Good so far. Names of buildings and 'architectural shipwreck'?

Did google image search by image play a part?

    cheers

The place is Turner Contemporary, an art museum in Margate, Kent, UK. The shipwreck is probably the first version of design for the centre that would have been a bit expensive.

As for the other question, it helped to get to the right direction.

Edit: Found a name for the other building, Droit House.

Thanks Lurvio for the outstanding legwork and results [IMG]

That Droit House has quite an interesting history as being the old Customs House at Margate Harbour and now Thanet’s visitor information centre.

However I think the "architectural shipwreck" Tiny asked for is the original design for the Turner Contemporary...

Next Luvio for doing the major legwork ?

Or may I suggest to invite one of the followers of this thread to post a new teaser . . ? ?

    Good luck..!!

    P.S. - Thanks Tiny for this interesting teaser . . :)

    Great stuff, Lurvio, Angelique.

The 'shipwreck' was indeed the previous scheme, an exciting sculptural 'object' building which sat outside the nearby harbour wall. Originally designed to be a boatlike timber framed and clad object, the potential ferocity of the sea in anger meant that the design team had to concede a series of design changes.

    [IMG] (architects image)

The project was aborted in 2006, when the estimated cost had increased from the original £7 million in the 2001 design competition to some £25 million by 2006. In 2008 the design team paid the local authority £6million of the £8 million abortive design fees already racked up. More than the original costings for the whole building.

The Snohetta scheme was certainly a powerful sculptural object, lacking in response to the town context perhaps, but drawing on maritime imagery. I know its always easy with hind sight, but it seems remarkable that the issues with constructing a form so complex (for terrestrial architecture and budgets) in a position so exposed to the elements did not come to light much earlier.

There was a bit of a PR disaster along the way, when, to quote Iain Aitch in the Guardian:

'A further chance to prove the doubters wrong arrived last week, when a 6m-high obelisk (wittily dubbed the 'Turner Prick' by locals) was installed in the sea to test proposed materials. Its paintwork and skin would be exposed to the rigours of salt water and high winds to see how they fared. Sadly, the architects never got to find out, as the entire structure toppled over on its second night, providing locals with the opportunity to laugh and point, as well as pen their "We told you so" letters to the Thanet Times.'

And much as he is a highly respected architect, frankly I find the £17.5 million Chipperfield scheme rather insipid.

I hope that Margate, a town with a very depressed economy, gets the 'Bilbao' effect it is looking for. If the Snohetta proposal had been achieveable, I think they might have stood a better chance.

As it stands, and I'm no sort of conservative traditionalist when it comes to architecture, but for me, the Droit house is the gem here - a real sweetie.

And I guess now we have to say goodbye to using web images for our wonderful game!

    Oops...

    Overlooked this part of Lurvio's post . . . .

Which made him answer the questions for 100% of course

Well Lurvio, Congratulations and your turn . . :)

    Good luck!

Seeing the pics of the completed Turner Contemporary I think the sight at the building is an embarrassment, especially for the skyline, but also seen from of town . . . . .

Yep, that building jumps out of the picture there pretty badly. :p

I think we could make a gentlemans decision to not use Image search by image, but the search can also be fooled, here's two exaples in the form of a new teaser (as Angel likes to call them).

    So where is this?

Edit: Almost forgot, this teaser has a connection to the last one.

OK, what do we see . . . [IMG]

First pic shows what looks like an inflatable bandstand canopy, cars in the pic seems to be not that old as the black and white picture suggests . . . . between the aft legs of the blown up canopy it looks like we see the bandstand of pic two in the background . . . . btw, the leafs on the threes tells us it's summer and it looks like a temporary thing, so for a music event . . ? ? - no mess or bustle, so maybe before the event or after clean up . . ? ? ?

Pic two shows a bandstand plus a statue plus some snow piles and some houses of which the first one on the right in a 400% view looks like it might be made of wood with vertical planks outside, so all in all I would say a northern European country . . . . but can't understand the road sign which seems to be on the left (the side of the bandstand and not on the side of the house) which suggests drive on the left which doesn't fit to place the rest of the picture . . .

Well, despite that left road sign thing we might have to look at the european mainland nordic countries as the other indicators seem to lead that way, so we might have to translate our search items* into Danish or Norwegian or Swedish or Finnish, and google that . . . . didn't search yet, just wrote down what I saw for now . . . :)

    * like: "bandstand - statue - inflatable - canopy - music (?) - festival (?)" - and everything else from the pics . . . :idea:

So who sees some more leads or who takes a shot at it with above guesses . . . .

I'm off line till at least mid next week, so it must be solved by then . . . . :p

    Good luck !
    Angel

P.S. - Maybe Tiny can take my place in this search as there are very few active searchers at the moment, or maybe some new ones will show up . . ? ?

No clue what that might be from these pics, or maybe a fixed canopy was too expensive for this place or event . . .
