    Yeah :)
I suppose you found it, or that you know this little town?
I admit I didn't know that old one was so big!
Seems like it's almost as big as some of those we have in Norway?

I think I will approach this harbor from the south...

Angel, is Bruxell and Anvers changed a lot since 1964? Is Knok le Zoot always the trendy place? I spend my student years over there. It was fun and very much alive. What a party. I liked so much Anvers.
(My spelling of the cities can be off, corrected me please)

I didn't know the place but a few of the pics have many clues. I PM you which has most. About the vortex, I don't know if you have bigger ones in Norway but don't think so. I PM a few links so you can compare and please tell us. There are more of them there, the one in the aerial pic below can reach a diameter of more then 3 times the lenght of the big knockabout schooner which is for sale in your pics. I have very little time this week so I won't give the answer.

Good Luck to everybody, it's a nice teaser and a pleasure to solve. You always find interesting stuff no matter if you find the place or not. This time my bonus was the vortex and the schooner.

Daniel, I did a teaser here about some of the changes. I will hunt it up tonight and post some additional info with it.

    Cheers!

Yes, you've got it right, probably all of you :)

No, no, no..!! I didn't win, I didn't give the answer to the teaser and I didn't give a clue that gave it away! So the hunt is still open..!! That's why I motivated the others to go for it in my previous post.

I was just writing you the promised PM (it's coming) when I saw that your first assumption that Norway has a bigger vortex is right..!! The Lofoten Maelstrom is the biggest whirlpool in the world (far as I know now) and is the only one that's bigger then the one near the place we're looking for.

BTW, you just gave away some nice teasers..!!

You didn't post far too much pictures, there is only one that makes it easy. And the edit info ‘‘boat for sale’’ is too much when noticing the type of the boat.

I'll explain in the PM which you can publish here when it's solved (still didn't write it, now this post came in the way :)).

    Good Luck!

    yeah, and that schooner..

(btw, just finished with vat calcs for last year, the most boring work you can imagine, going home now, 11PM here)

It's the type of the red sail schooner that matters . . ;)

    Good Luck!

Yes, but I'm not sure which is bigger, Saltstraumen or Moskstraumen (the Lofoten Maelstrom). Maybe Raggi can tell us. But how does one measure and compare the size of whirlpools? By the diameter of the vortex, or by the depth of the vortex, or by the volume of the flow, or by the speed of the current, or by the total acreage of violent disordered water? Depending on the chosen comparison unit the outcome which is bigger can differ.

But I noticed that even on the other side of the Atlantic they recognize that Norway has a bigger whirlpool then the one near the place we're looking for. So I settle for that.

BTW, how is your comment related to the quote of the schooner you put above it . .

    Cheers,
    Angel

Shouldn't that vortex be spinning the opposite direction?

    It looks like you're right..!!

All three pics show the same vortex which is near the place we're looking for.

Saltstraumen is the strongest (fastest) tidal current here I think, 22 knots.
Moskenesstraumen is a bit mythical, I think. It is said to produce enormous eddies out in the open ocean, just outside Lofoten islands. Old illustrations show big ships being dragged down in the spiral flow...

It seems like this myth is busted!

Just a reminder: Angel showed me it's quite easy to find the name of that little town on the other side of the Atlantic..

btw, It's also a myth that small eddies like that in the bath tub will have different directions on the northern and southern hemisphere. While the Coriolis effect is huge on large rivers in Siberia running north and then turning east as the earth radius get smaller
    (like Lena north of Yakutsk:[IMG]
    )
... well, in a bathtub the chance is pretty close to 50/50, maybe 50.001/49,999...
For a little larger eddies like "ours", I don't know, but I think other factors will be more important than the earth rotation
