Mike,
In your google pic, the top red, bed looking thingy, is roughly where i took the picture.
The yard, in my pic, if you zoom is is thus (attached) used to be Hitachi, i think its changed names now.
The in-law was a naval architect too...all on his own door step no less!

I can see I'm going to have to be more picky with my pix!

Reading the signs..
Shop wall on the right. KU-MI-A-I written with hiragana, thats UNION.. first kanji HYõ means ICE, the rest are just too blurry to see how many strokes they have.
Oil tank behind the boat shows only one, SHIN, gentleman.
The tallest building at the top , a bit blurry but could be BUTSU/MOTSU=thing,object ,DAN/NAN=man, behind the pole, SHI=man, samurai, retainer, blurry but quess IN=cause(be due, depend on), KÕ=shine (light, ray) HO-TE-RU in katakana meaning hotel..

Not many clues.. Ice shop and a hotel

Why's the sailors face and name of the boat erased?? ... Reflection is so distorted And that big building on the top... argh! You making me mad.. Don't know how to write Kanji's in Google Earth search
Reckon however eastern Kyushu closer to Nagasaki maybe..

For me it looks more like the southern part of Shikoku.

Dunno how successful Teddy will come out with Kanji´s, but for me it´s hopeless without another verbal hint.
