Sorry to be slow, but I'm busy working. Playa Jandía it is and Morro Jable the town. Hoytedow was in the right track with Fuerteventura. The villa close to Morro Jable was built and owned by Gustav Winter and was said to be a refuge for the nazi submarines' officers. There is a novel of Alberto Vázquez Figueroa named "Fuerteventura" which develops an story about that and the "Enigma" coding machine the nazis used. Read more on the villa at: http://www.sunnyfuerteventura.com/vi...ter/index.html Cheers.

Lots of rumour and telltales about that "submarine base". That did never exist, if you want my opinion. First, the local fishermen would have known of a cave of such size, and that knowledge would have survived the passing time. Second, a German sub. base would have needed so much equipment to be operable that would have been a serious problem to ship there hidden. We shall not forget that Spain was a neutral nation during WWII! Though most of the Spanish ports were used to refuel and provisioning by German U boats (at night and alongside a German freighter which officially was interned). The massive wiring and fuses in the Winter villa is a sign that there was a radio station, capable to cover the south Atlantic. That makes sense. Just my 2c And the next? Who´s it??? Hoyte?

Jaa, then: ![]() there are not too many left. from Wikipedia, Fort Fisher Wilmington, North Carolina Battle of Fort Fisher In use 1861-1865 Battles/wars First Battle of Fort Fisher Second Battle of Fort Fisher Fort Fisher was a Confederate fort during the American Civil War. It protected the vital trading routes of the port at Wilmington, North Carolina, from 1861 until its capture by the Union in 1865. The fort was located on one of Cape Fear River's two outlets to the Atlantic Ocean on what was then known as Federal Point and today is known as Pleasure Island. Because of the roughness of the seas there, it was known as the Southern Gibraltar.

I will try a throw: Back in 2002, mid august, I was sailing along the coast of 'vacationland'. I managed to knock my wife off into the water while landing the tender through the surf on this island: ![]() The only reason we were going to the trouble was to view a funny little sea bird which was about to vacate the place for its yearly flight to the north. Back say some 100 years ago, this island group is the only place this bird would have been seen along this coast. My wife is a good sport- the 60 degree water hardly damped her spirits. What island is this?

Now I think maybe we will order a taxi at Malpensa anyway, because we are five to share it and the driver is also a keen freerider they tell us. We will stay in Alagna for a few days and then at Refugio Guglielmina, quite high up in the Monte Rosa, for the last couple of days. We have snow in Norway, but in January it's very dark and cold here, and Italy has more lifts, wine, grappa, pasta, antipasta ![]() |
