No, I am not sure, but you may be able to see the glow of Ulster(?) over the horizon.

Thanks apex1. Looking at Google earth I lost track of the scale of the whole thing. Glad you can't see my chagrin at my mistake.

It's been suggested that this lighthouse was built by the famous engineer Robert Stevenson. That's certainly the right dynasty, but this one was built by the uncle of the famous black sheep of this family (the one who preferred to travel, especially with a donkey and eventually died on the Somoan Islands. The island you can see to the south is neither part of the United Kingdom or a member of the European Union.

Is that island that is not a EU member a "real" nation or a "micronation". Faroes are not in EU, are they?

The Manxman are not EU members as far as I know. And the Channel islands?

Wiki: The Isle of Man (ˈmæn), or Mann (ˈmanɪn), is a self-governing Crown dependency, located in the Irish Sea at the geographical centre of the British Isles. The head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, who holds the title of Lord of Mann. The Crown is represented by a Lieutenant Governor. The island is not part of the United Kingdom but foreign relations, defence, and ultimate good-governance of the Isle of Man are the responsibility of the government of the United Kingdom. Inhabited for millennia, the island gradually became a Celtic-Norse community as the Norse settled there, starting about AD 850. This has left a legacy ranging from the Tynwald parliament to many local place names. After a period of alternating rule by the kings of England and Scotland, the Manx came under the feudal over-lordship of the English Crown. The lordship revested into the British Crown in 1764 but the island never became part of the United Kingdom and retained its status as an internally self-governing jurisdiction. The Isle of Man is not a part of the European Union, but has a limited relationship concerning the free movement of goods.

Well, you learn something new every day! I NEVER would have guessed the unique status of that place, having assumed it to be totally under British control. I did check imagery on the Little Ross lighthouse and could find no differences. Well done Mike Johns. Last edited by hoytedow : 09-28-2009 at 10:09 AM. Reason: omission
