What's the neighbourly thing to do?

Went out this morning to find a new Satellite Dish on my porch roof. I would have thought it would be at least the neighbourly thing for the guy to ask if he could put it there. My first gut reaction is to climb out there and take it down myself. I know it's not much but I really don't want my house to look like it should be in the trailer park.

Is this a shared property? I can't fathom someone installing something on your property without permission. Not the kind of thing I'd put up with.
Maybe Canada has a different interpretation of property rights than here (USA).

Mile..not at all. He has zero right to do that...even if it is a strata property.

If it were me I'd be right there banging on his door and telling him to get it down ASAP...or phone the cops.

And charge him for damaging your roof..those lag bolts go right through the roofing...will it leak and make your roof rot in a couple years?

Cops wont do a thing accept tell you it's a civil matter, which it is. There is an amenable way out. First, he/she needs to realize they are in the wrong to have done it without your permission. Then, it's open to negotiation. Free satellite TV would be my first thought, otherwise, it's gotta go. You'll want to start the paperwork with the landlord and tenant board right away regardless, as it takes time and you don't know the outcome so act now. You can always call off the dogs later if your able to work things out.

Wow! You seem to be on the verge of escalating this incident into an all out feud.

The neighbourly thing to do would be to visit him with a bottle of scotch and
some scones you baked yourself. Watch a game of curling together and
share a few (Canadian) laughs.
If he isn't pleasant, then wait for the poison in the scones to take effect and
throw him out into the snow without giving him the antidote.

Tell your neighbor thanks for the dish. Cut the cable at the property line and re-route it to your tv or take it down to the re-cyclers and put the 20 cents you will get toward some roof tar.

Nice job of tucking the wiring away too, the dish kinda works in with the steering wheel- a juxtaposition of sorts & with a circular relationship crossing & connecting different time periods. Dunno really... treat it as art.... or shoot it down, although free sat TV might be nice.Jeff.
PS: I cant really believe anyone would consider doing that as "normal" so be careful of A holes.....

Not mean enough.
Replace his porch light bulb with a bright red one.
(Be careful though, sailors might come knocking on your door!)

Seriously though, we don't know anything about the perpetrator, and people are
already talking about calling cops and impending civil actions.

Yeah, if he/she (sounds very unusual) would do that may also be a serial killer.

Then bet on the guy with the most guns.
(This might be an appropriate juncture to discuss the difference in US and Canadian gun laws.)

couple things.
could be an illegal hook up ON YOUR PROPERTY.
(most dishes arent legally hook-up).
and holes through shingles are never a good thing.
especially come ice and snow season.

pretty un-neighborly to not ask Id say.

If it was me ...
it would be in my garage waiting for the next yard sale.
he didnt ask to put it up, you dont have to ask to take it down.

His house has been damaged..do you volunteer to pay to repair the rotten roof in 5 years then??

I know the cops won't do anything, but at least there is a record of the house being damaged for any future small claims court procedings,if it gets that far.

At this stage the whole thing is a bit of a joke, and offering any advice is
laughable. We don't know anything about the property and who is allowed to
do what with it, and nor do know anything about the perpetrator. Did the
neighbour actually put the antenna there himself?

So much could be answered with a simple visit.

I see lawyers in the future. And, because the OP is a self-proclaimed
"raconteur", I see stories in which lawyers are portrayed as money-grubbing
shysters.

Or you could go to the auto salvage and acquire a door from a Yugo and railroad spike it to the roof over his bedroom.
