The cost of maintaining it and the amount of personal you have working full time aboard it.
It goes without saying it has to be big to keep staff.

No, the wife and kids serving you beer and food doesn't count
It would be super nice though, bloody hell, just think about it.

Other.
Hull always coloured blue, propelled by a large red cape like spinnaker, and equipped to rescue the world, small children and hapless damsels. Sailmark: a large red 'S' in a yellow triangle.

Superyacht = If i add up the amount of money i have earned, the amount of money i shall ever hope to earn, then double it, and that still doesn't make a dent in the basic cost of the "yacht".

A superyacht is one that every one else is BLOODY JEALOUS of, and must be kept in a state of pristine excellence in a prominent viewing location, so all can view and mumble something like "lucky creeps" and you as the owner have not a care in the world lavishing money on your "little toy"... Moored stern to at Monaco during season, and delivered for your pleasure to the "in" places at the premium berth mixing it with other superyacht owners.... Oh **** go to BCF and get a life

By definition:
the term "Megayacht" was used by the industry from the 70ies to around 2000 to describe a luxurious Yacht above 30 meters.
During the 90ies when Yachts went up in range, some people (mainly journalists), not knowing the term "Mega" was already common in the professional scene, called those large boats "Superyachts".
Now we have the strange situation that "super" is superior to "mega".

Richard

Not super enough...

this is, I believe, Ambramovich's 'old' 'yacht' (sorry - I believe a yacht should have sails, otherwise its a motorboat! ) spotted (hard to miss!) at anchor in the sound of Gigha back in August. Cast off for his new super *dooper* one. Note the superyacht bling, in the form of chopper, motorlaunch and real sailing yacht hanging off the back.

Yes Manie, you´re right! For that reason many seriously cruising people step back to something below 30 meter, to get rid of crew!
Quite often we see, that people which have had it all, are fine with much less, than others believe to be "a must".

Richard
