Not particularly UPLIFTING, but often helpful - if not appreciated.

"get over it" is helpful advice ? I thought it was just code for "don't bother me with your problems", a bit like the mafioso standard, "don't worry about it"

Is it the opposite of the convivial drunks response to every urging, "No Prollem."?

    Good one ;)

Reminds me of the old peoples home where last thing at night they give them a hot cup of cocoa and a viagara (I know how to spell it but its on the censored list!).

Stops them rolling out of bed in the night...

    One of my father's favorites:

Non illegitimis carborundum: "Don't let the ******** grind you down."

Back in college I adopted as my own a silly phrase that is actually meant to remind how not to respond, though I've occasionally given in and taken the advise literally just for funsies to blow off steam.

"When in danger, or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout!"

    Eric, I prefer:

Commolitis usque adulteri. Your Latin is actual not, but a British pseudo - a joke of sorts, from around the turn of the 19th to 20th century. Another mock-Latin aphorism, meaning the same would be Ne carborundum, though considering it's roots, maybe "don't let the ******** polish you down" would be more appropriate . . . ;)

    Hi Paul,
Yes, I am aware of the many variations of that phrase, and it's purported meanings. But that is the way my father used it. I am also sure that my Latin teacher sister would find faults with it. But that's my story, and I'm sticking to it! :)
