I see them from time to time sailing in groups or packs or pods together in Newport harbor. They are supremely graceful under sail. But exceedingly uncomfortable to sail on. 12 Meter yachts are to sailing what Formula One cars are to motorsports. They have NO amenities at all, whatsoever, full stop. Below decks, they are a hull with floorboards to keep you from putting your foot through their lightweight skin. The only thing found down there are lockers to store the compliment of 37 sails they carried to the starting line. They were even towed to and from the race course to avoid putting any additional strain on the hulls or the rigging. Like Formula One cars, they are built right to the edge of failure.

I have been aboard a couple of them over time. They are magnificent boats. But as for a sailing experience? It is better to be aboard another craft outfitted with comfy accouterments than on board one looking out at all the people watching you. For pure sailing fun, you still can't beat a Sunfish!
