    Yeah, that redefines the definition of "loosely" based on the Odyssey.

    As I remember (and I don't have a copy of the Odyssey to hand) the sirens were beautiful women who lured sailors onto the rocks, then feasted on their bodies. Odysseus avoids their trap by ordering his men to fill their ears with soft wax, and lash him to the mast of the ship (with no wax, so he can hear). As they approach O can see and hear the sirens, but as they pass (the crew would be facing aft, so could not see or hear them) the sirens turn to cackling crones seated on a pile of skulls.

    Quite why O faces this torment in the way he does has never been quite clear to me, though it could be a form of penance for the trade of his love for for Circe in return for the lives of his men.
