I once bought something with the "Nautica" label on it, and now have a orange key float. I hooked it up to my hovercraft laynard.

That key thing is pretty cool.

tie a bit of string to your keys and the other end to your pants - sailors call it a lanyard! Useful, cheap too

I prefer the good old-fashioned Wichard clip. Simple, stainless, and heavy enough that you know if your keys have fallen off.

No trouble tying the knot...But I had to use a hell of a lot of rope....

I was always told and believed (silly Yank that I am) that there were only two "ropes" on any vessel: bell rope and whistle rope (some call it a lanyard). But I am once again amazed by Bergalia's depth (width? length? diameter?) of knowledge - I now know of a third: the Highlander's Key Rope (although I think Bergalia is being modest and didn't want to say "hawser")
