MLK is Martin Luther King. US has a National Holiday in his honor.

Do you know who James Earl Ray is?

James Earl Jones must have been horrified when he saw that sign.

OK, I'm an idiot sometimes; I totally missed that it said 'Ray' instead of 'Jones.' I was reading what I thought it said, instead of what was actually there.

Thanks for being reasonably polite with your response.... can I get away with claiming I hadn't had my second cup of coffee yet?

Umm, wait. The sun was over the yardarm, wasn't it? Maybe I can claim I hadn't had my second drink yet, instead.:D

No, it would be the featured speaker at the event, I think: James Earl Jones.

!@#$. I did it too. Wrote James Earl Ray, and had to edit it.

Hmm..another reason why i don't bother with humour on the web. Irony goes over the heads of many and its lost in space..or rather cyberspace....oh well :p

Just do what I do; write it as though you were trying to make an 11 year old understand. That is what the sit-com writers do. :p

I tried to post a little background but the best link wouldn't let me cut and paste, so I just linked to it. I guessed it might be a bit confusing to others. I remember it happening, so tough for me to judge. Its one of those gaffs that is so culturally loaded that everyone was laughing and crying at the same time. In terms of pure irony, I can't think of a greater one.

Attributed to wiki but snipped from elsewhere.

I'd take umbrage at that if I knew what umbrage meant!
    Where's my umbrella?

I knew what it meant. It means to take insult(I took it as a joke), but it is a cognate of shade, which is why I asked about the umbrella. Umbra means shade; umbrella means little shade. :)

A little raw umber, er, I mean humor.
